Should I worry about DD?

DH and I have taken turns looking after DD (4) today and have only just compared notes and realised she has only had one wee today and barely drank anything.

This is after four days of a bad cold/flu (first two days she had a near-constant fever), but has been ok the last two days, doing her usual activities but with additional naps/longer night sleep.

She fell asleep at the dinner table today, we just assumed she is still recovering and the busy-ish day was too much for her.

Now I'm so worried she is dehydrated. I have tried to wake her up but she won't drink anything.

What shall I do?

Has she eaten? If so there will be some water in the food. When I was worried with DS, I was told no wee for 16 hours would be worrying. You hopefully aren't there yet, but could be by morning. Can you try ice or similar?

Thanks @BendingSpoons She has refused food most of the day. She had a couple of spoonfuls of cereal with milk at breakfast, then some ice cream tonight, that's it. There were two instances of offering water where she took at least one glug today but that's all as far as I know 😥

Her wee output is always low anyway (went over 18h during potty training which caused me a lot of stress!) and typically she would only go 2 or 3 times in 24 hours, but it has just been once today....

She went 16 hours between last night's wee and today's wee, and it will be over 16 hours again if she doesn't go by morning. Argh so stressful. If she hadn't been so sleepy at dinner time I wouldn't have thought much of it but the excess sleepiness is a worry.

That level of sleepiness wouldn't concern me, she's been ill and will need several extra hours of sleep a day. However, I would definitely want to get more fluids into her. I think tomorrow that needs to be the focus -.water, juice, milk, hot chocolate, whatever she'll take. Full sugar and fat if possible to give her some energy too.

Ice lollies are good too but I'd be inclined so seek advice from 111 given that it's now night time and she's so sleepy

itsnotalwaysthateasy · 17/01/2026 22:04

I would also suggest ice lollies. They are fun, but get the water in.

When my DD was so dehydrated with a virus that we were in A&E waiting for a bed, she took my DH's can of full fat coke and drank some. The paediatrician said that if she drank all of it we could go home. She did.
Apparently it is very good for dehydration and diarrhea.....I was advised to stir it to get rid of most of the bubbles.
If nothing else works it might be worth trying.

She asked for water through the night and has had more fluid and food today generally thankfully but still not seeing much output.

She ended up not having a wee until 11am. It's now 5pm and it has been the only one today again. We went out today and the back of her tights and dressed ended up soaked but I couldn't figure out if she'd wet herself or sat in a puddle.

If she wet herself it is unheard of for her so makes me worried about a urine infection but if she didn't then I'm worried she's weeing so infrequently still.

I wish she would just wee 😪

You.will smell if it is urine or not. How many pees does she normally do a day ? I would see how she is tomorrow and get her a gp appointment if she isn't back to her old self

Pleasetalkmedown6 · 18/01/2026 17:32

Unfortunately my sinuses are totally blocked with no sense of smell at the moment, this virus has been kicking our a**es for a week now.

She does usually only wee 2 or 3 times a day so not massively less but still

Trying really hard not to keep at her about drinking and weeing as she is strong minded and it will probably have the opposite effect!

Just keep offering her drinks if she is allowed squash you can make some up as ice cubes to drop into water, it might be the novelty factor, but little sips and often.
