Lots of people emigrating?

In your social circle do you know lots of people who have/are in the process of emigrating?

Keep seeing articles about people feeling fed up with the state of the country, cost of living etc and moving abroad and wondering if this is really happening at scale or just hyperbole.

We have been looking to buy our first home (early forties, have kids) for a while and have been focused on this for so long but wondering if I need to re-assess our long terms needs.

DH is foreign, we could go to his country but I’ve never been sure with the language barrier, leaving family behind etc despite the high standard of living there. Can’t help but feel that everywhere has its problems and a mode could be out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Yes I know a lot of people in my circle that have immigrated. Ourselves included. It really depends on personal circumstances.

ShetlandishMum · 16/01/2026 13:00

We have relocated to our native country after 20 years in UK. We have dual citizenship.

Quite a few friends from abroad well settled in UK have done the same the latest two years.

itsthetea · 16/01/2026 13:00

No one

know quite a few who have returned here recently though

Blorengia · 16/01/2026 13:08

Interesting.
I recently came across the fb group 'Moving from USA to the UK' and it seems the spaces left by those moving out of UK will be quickly filled by American citizens wanting to move here, or return here, after many years in the States.

tinytemper66 · 16/01/2026 13:48

No one I know. My sister is leaving England to return to Wales though…

Tbh I wouldn't have settled in US at the moment. If that was only option we would have stayed in UK.

I wonder if it depends partly on where you live, obviously London/big cities will have a more transient population.

From the FT:

If even just a small portion of the wealthy leave our country we are seriously fucked.

Where I live local towns have been without water for weeks at a time, the holes are ridden with potholes which are fixed and then appear a few days later, schools can’t get enough staff. This is is in the supposedly prosperous southeast!

Apologies for sounding so grim, I’m normally optimistic about the future but it’s failing me today

Yes, we know multiple families leaving. Some international and going home, others British and seeking a better / different life elsewhere. All of them wealthy, certainly top 1% tax payers.

If we were not tied by various constraints I would absolutely consider it.

Silverbirchleaf · 16/01/2026 15:26

One person thinking of going to Australia, and a couple to France. One couple returning from New Zealand.

Trouble is, grass isn’t always greener. New Zealand is struggling with similar problems and the young are leaving. Australia has a housing crisis with rents and mortgages increasing a lot. Plus cost if living has increased there as well.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/01/2026 15:28

I know quite a few but they are generally couples where one partner is British and the other comes from an EU country. It generally happened between finishing primary school and starting secondary which is one of the least disruptive points of a child’s education.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 16/01/2026 15:30

No one. Large town in South East.

Quite a few in our circle are either in the process of leaving (Switzerland) or considering it (EU). I’m in the considering camp. Interestingly, no one is seriously considering the UAE despite the papers focusing on the UAE as a top destination for those leaving.

Greenhouseblues · 16/01/2026 15:35

London, affluent area - no one I know is leaving. One colleague to Middle East in last 12 months.

mippis · 16/01/2026 15:39

We are going to EU country. Not to the one I am from but I know the language of our target country.

what I have heard the health care is better. Taxes more or less the same but general living costs lower

Sorbae · 16/01/2026 15:43

I don’t know anyone who has emigrated in the last couple of years. I know a few people who have moved back to the UK though. A family member included.

About 15 years ago, quite a few of my friends and lots of old work colleagues all moved to Australia. There was a big career drive in the UK at the time to move over there, especially in creative industries, so it seemed like everyone was moving. It was like a mass exodus. I’d say about just under half are still living there, the rest moved back to the UK in time.

Elbowpatch · 16/01/2026 15:44

No, I do know some who have returned from living abroad. One from France and two from Australia.

WallaceinAnderland · 16/01/2026 15:44

I hear people talking about it but many of them are ignorant of the visa regulations and think they can just up and move where they like.

floppybit · 16/01/2026 15:46

What country is your husband from?

Octavia64 · 16/01/2026 15:46

No.

i live in the south east.

quite a few people moving to places with cheaper houses though - downsizing etc.

OldieButBaddie · 16/01/2026 15:47

London here, don't know anyone. One lot of friends recently moved back from the US where they had been for a few years.

I have dual nationality but I want to stay here. Why would I uproot my life and leave my friends and family for the possibility of something being a little bit better? It's all swings and roundabouts too so you could go somewhere and it get taken over by fascists!

If Reform got in and started acting like Trump I may consider it though, but temporarily

Hardly. These are the type of people who avoid paying any tax.

christmassytimeagain · 16/01/2026 15:52

No, none at all. Few US friends esp British ones with American partners seriously considering coming back

zeddybrek · 16/01/2026 15:52

I'm from London and don't know anyone leaving. Had some families come back though as things didn't work out. Just my view but seems people leaving seem to focus on what they gain overseas and not on what they loose here.
