Bath mat stuck to bath! How to deal?

Not something I thought I’d be asking, lol. I left the bath mat hanging over the bath to dry a few weeks ago. It’s the spare bathroom so forgot about it. When I went in today I picked the bath mat up off the bath and it was sticking to it, so I pulled it off, and the underside of the bath mat has stuck to the bath! Little sort of lumps of rubber backing (I assume that’s what it is). Any awesome domestic goddesses have any idea how I get it off please? Without obviously putting a new mat down and never moving it again/shutting the door and never returning/moving house..

I would start with fairy liquid and hot water -soak tea towels and cover and leave it to soak in and use spatula to easy it off? Alternatively you could look into getting some Sticky stuff remover. Have you tried a scrub daddy on it? I don’t know if rubbing alcohol (isopropanol) can be used on plastic baths, but it’s another option. Also try wd40.

I would try oil - baby oil, cooking oil, but make sure it doesn't go down the plug.

And maybe warm the rubber with a hairdryer.

What is the bath made of? Enamelled or plastic?

Is it the tiny suction cups that are stuck ? If so get something small and stick like to break the vacuum under each one like a cocktail stick.

What’s the bath made of?

I am not sure what the bath is made of. It’s the original in the house which is 20years old, so fibreglass/plastic?

Use a rubber, they are magic at getting marks off white things!

Baby oil, let it sit. Don’t fill the whole bath. Apply it to the rubber spots. Leave 12 hours and then try to scrape it off with your finger through a rubber glove.

Bravo. Beat me to it 😂

I think she means a rubber backed toweling bath mat she picked up off the floor draped over the edge of the bath. Today she moved it and it's left a residue rather than a ' sucker' non slip mat

You can get sticky stuff remover. Or maybe a bit of heat with a hairdryer ? Obvs being careful there's no water around.

Hohofortherobbers · 16/01/2026 22:27

Id use some lighter fluid on a cloth. Gets all gummy stuff off

ChocHotolate · 16/01/2026 22:37

Sticky stuff remover, really good at removing sticky stuff (I know, who’d have though it)

Exactly that. Thank you for explaining it better than I did! There is a residue from the backing of the mat. I am going out under cover of darkness tomorrow to purchase some lube and a fish slice. Then armed with all manner of suggestions here, will tackle the bath and we shall see how I do.. thanks all.

Magic eraser and/or barkeepers friend

TumbledTussocks · 17/01/2026 08:24

Turps would break down the residue but would smell.

Sounds weird but I’ve heard mayonnaise is brilliant for residue though never tried myself.

Poppins2016 · 17/01/2026 08:29

"Sticky stuff remover" is great, but you can often get the same results by using oil (cooking oil/olive oil) and rubbing. Just wash off with washing up liquid and warm water.

I'd try cooking oil and rubbing with a soft cloth (nothing abrasive - you'll scratch the bath) before going out and buying anything else.

efeslight · 17/01/2026 08:34

Was going to suggest mayonnaise thick enough to not just slide away

Blankscreen · 17/01/2026 08:35

I would try and dissolve the glue so you're less likely to scratch the bath. Sticky stuff remover would be my first port of call or randomly wd40 gets rid of sticky things.

Heating it up could work.also
Last resort I would manually scrub it off with bar keepers friend and a piece of wire wool but that might wreck the bath

Soontobe60 · 17/01/2026 08:37

WD 40

Mischance · 17/01/2026 08:39

Erasers are brilliant for this sort of thing. I would start there rather than making a special journey to Ann Summers ....

Bottomofthedeepbluesea · 17/01/2026 08:56

Also came to say WD40

@Purplecatshopaholic any joy?
