Waste - where am I going wrong?

I live in a conversion, we share 2 general waste bins and 3 recycle bins between 3 flats. Our neighbour downstairs in the garden flat has a garden/food waste bin which they keep separate from the other bins and other flats can’t use it. I’ve enquired with the council for one for our flat but got the reply that this flat is not entitled to one (?).

I recycle everything that can be recycled, then food waste, dirty nappies, tissues and wet wipes go to general waste.

The other flat also has a baby. We fill one bin per week with nappies and wipes alone. Collection was every two weeks so far and bins are absolutely overflowing by this point.

2 of us are owners (leasehold), one rents from the landlord who us owners pay ground rent to.

Should each flat have their own general waste bin? I wonder if the landlord didn’t declare the third flat.

Why does only one flat qualify for a garden/food waste bin?

Collection every two weeks just doesn’t work with this set up, and we will drown in rubbish if they change it to every 3 weeks.

You need to ask your council why you aren't eligible for a food waste bin !

I imagine because there is only one garden. If the garden/food waste bin is just one bin.

I would send an email to the council outlining the situation very fully, number of people sharing bins etc. And have a good look on the council website for info about what is available and what you are entitled to.

Are the other flat owners with whom you share the bins, also recycling? Is everyone flattening or squashing it to take up less space?

Presumably, the flat with the green waste bin is the only one with a garden, or maybe they pay extra for it? Did you ask the council why you can’t have such a bun? In my area, if you want garden waste collected you have to pay extra for it, we are not allowed to add things like veg peelings, it literally is garden waste, not simply ‘compostables’.
