Bad hairdresser

I've had a mild reaction to hair dye. I've been using the same dye and salon for years. I had a test done when I first started and it was fine. Several years later I reacted. The hairdresser said its not her dye because I reacted 2 days after and you react immediately. I've googled and you can react 2 or 3 days later and your eyelid can swell which is what happened to me.

She said the dye didn't touch my eye so my eyelid dwelling is not from her dye. Also a few other things I dont like about her. She never uses a heat protecting spray before blow drying and said it's not necessary. Its essential according to Google. She said u only need the spray if u use straighteners. Also she is a cash only salon which is inconvenient as I have to get cash each time.

Having said this she cuts my hair very well and is a very friendly person and we get on well. Not sure whether to leave or stay. Im going on holiday soon and booked in for a colour just before I go but I'm thinking of cancelling. My head still stings from the reaction which is only 5 days ago. Im on medication and pai killers

Why would you dye your hair again if you have had a reaction ?

TeaRoseTallulah · 16/01/2026 08:28

She's wrong about the dye especially the eye swelling.

Coffeeishot · 16/01/2026 08:29

You have a list of things you hate about the whole experience but like your haircut can't you see what a condratiction it is to use this hairdresser, fwiw what did you think people did before heat sprays ?

I thought so. Maybe she's trying to protect her reputation

Because I have grey roots and she said if I go somewhere like Holland and barret where they sell mild hair dye she will use that because her dye is quite harsh

Never really thought about what people did. I had my hair dye done last Friday and I didn't react until Sunday so because im going away in march I booked the next colouring as I left the salon on Friday so it was booked before I reacted and since I never reacted before I just booked the colour again to make sure it was nice for the holiday. I usually get the colour done every 6 to 8 weeks. I still have an itchy head but it comes and goes but it's worse when I lay down. I just want an end to this reaction. My eye has gone down a bit. I was given eye drops by the optician. My GP said she had an allergic reaction like mine and it took 3 weeks to get better. She didn't say what caused it

Right now my head is so itchy

Are you taking antihistamines? I'm not sure advice from her about other hair dye is good, I think once you react like this you have to stop completely. Google it.

watchingplanesicantafford · 16/01/2026 09:12

Why would you risk it again just before a holiday? Sounds like an ideal way to ruin your whole trip.

jamandcustard · 16/01/2026 09:12

You should probably never dye your hair again.

There's no need to be so snippy with the PP, you said on your OP you are thinking of cancelling not that you definitely are.

According to the internet, you can have your hair coloured again. Once your reaction goes away, but you must have a test first and I've telephoned 2 hairdressers and their both said. It's perfectly fine, but you must have a test first.

Ok,I'm not really sure why you're posting tbh. I hope it's ok moving forward.

Pancakeflipper · 16/01/2026 12:28

Not sure if it's a myth but a hairdresser once told a customer (i listened in) to do tests regularly as products do alter and your body hormones etc alter which can create a reaction. And once had a reaction, be very careful as a second reaction could be worse.

As you are already phoning other hairdressers, I guess you moving in elsewhere?

I have now a called the appointment I made. She tried to say she will wash my hair again but I said no. A pharmacist said the stinging in the head was shingles and j said ive been told by more than one doctor that j do not have shingles because my rash is not a shingles rash. He wasn't convinced and he said as far as he is concerned I have shingles and need to be treated for shingles with shingles medication not antihistamines. I've also been told no other hairdresser will accept me whilst I still have this reaction. As for the constant itchy head I wonder if there is an itchy scalp treatment I could use. Im surprised nobody has suggested it
