Calling Londoners! Where should we eat curry?

Hi, we're going to London soon for DH's 50th and he really wanted to have curry on Brick Lane, but when researching it, the word on the street seems to be that it's turned into a bit of a tourist trap these days. Where is the best part of London to head for? We're staying on Chancery Lane, but will be in London Bridge area when we would like our curry.

Thanks in advance!

The Brick Lane curry isn't top notch but the experience is quite fun. You haggle. They expect it. Or you could wander up Brick Lane for the experience, then take a few minutes detour to Dishoom Shoreditch. Dishoom is a chain, but the food is good.

If you want good curry, one of the best I've had is at the The Cinnamon Club somewhere between Victoria and Pimlico. It's quite formal and upmarket, though - nothing like the lairy buzz of Brick Lane. Not cheap either, though I think they do an early evening menu.

Do you want fancy, authentic, or traditional ‘British’? What sort of things do you like?

Brigadiers, Tayyabs (for the grills more than the curries), Pahli Hill Bandra Bai, Gymkhana, Kricket - these range from expensive to not. Sheba on Brick Lane is also decent.

Not Brick lane, was good about 20 years ago....might have to visit southall and places like that to get something authentic and decent. Dishoom is good.

The food at Cinnamon Club is fantastic, but the vibe is very business dinner

Gymkhana, kricket or the Tamil prince

Tooting is where you go. Brick Lane has been awful for years.

Rosecoffeecup · 15/01/2026 23:02

Halal on Alie Street, Aldgate

Soonflower · 15/01/2026 23:04

Tayyabs, Whitechapel

FetchezLaVache · 15/01/2026 23:08

Wow, thanks so much - you didn't disappoint! Lots of food for thought here.

We are probably closer to the "lairy buzz" area of the spectrum than we are to "business dinner", but some fantastic suggestions here to help narrow the search.

Drummond Street was always a favourite for us for cheap and tasty food, but from your update it probably won’t be what you’re after. I don’t like Brigadiers, food was ok/not the best and it was loud (just lots of shouty people), same with most of the rest of that JKS chain (the food quality is poor for the price, not as loud though!). If your husband wants to go to Brick Lane, I’d go there. My friends and I still often go to there and Tayyabs or Needoo Grill. It’s busy, cheap, BYO and just a bit of fun. You’re not going to get anything different or unusual, but there are lots of bars there for afterwards and it’s just a fun night out for what it is.

ikeepforgetting · 15/01/2026 23:33

Lairy buzz is definitely Tayyabs! Not somewhere to spend the evening though, you eat then leave so the next in the queue can get in. Delicious lamb chops and the best naan I've ever had

Callmemummynotmaaa · 15/01/2026 23:35

Kricket is a firm favorite of ours. Food is amazing. Prices reasonable and atmosphere buzzy. Brick lane is worth a wander (or a big group for a party). Dishoom is always a good meal - but it wouldn’t be top of my list for best foods (it’s bookable which tends to be when we are most likely to choose it).

Tamila Kings Cross is buzzy with great food. You need to book

Ithinkofawittyusernamethenforgetit · 15/01/2026 23:55

Shad, Tooley Street

I'm here for Tayyabs too - I don't eat meat but can still fill my boots, the saag and naan are top notch. There was an amazing Nepalese restaurant in Drummond St but probs long gone. Such fragrant food ! And dahn sarf, Ganapati Kitchen in Peckham was my go to, Also good old Khans in Brixton, propah old school curry house and an institution. But I'm imagining my curry not your DP's ! 😂 I am sure you will find something super tasty and lairy on the side, because the buzz is part of the fun. 😋

RudolphRNR · 16/01/2026 01:37

Adding another vote for Tayyabs, it’s fab!
