Really struggling with technology, how can i get round this?

Trying to only include essential details.

DWP want me to have a separate bank account from dh. So I go to the bank who insist I have online banking which I have so far avoided because I'm dyslexic and really struggle with technology so i try and avoid it, I only got a smartphone last year.

I've been passed from pillar to post and still nowhere further forward 4 months later. It keeps asking me for random combinations of letters from my password in the wrong order and I just can't do that, it's too difficult and it makes my brain ache. DWP are sending me letters saying they need the account number for my new account but i haven't got it. It's not just that it's other technical stuff I really struggle with as well.

My 90 year old granny is better at this stuff than me.

Can you explain this to the bank and ask for disability assistance?

Or perhaps a techy friend or relative could help?

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 15/01/2026 21:54

Have you got Face ID? If so consider a Monzo account. Mine opens just by showing my face or by keying in my PIN number.

Alternatively - put your password into Chat GPT. Ask it to select the combination your bank wants and paste it from there.

But I agree with PP that asking for disability support at the bank is a good idea. They may be able to help you set up the account.

Why won’t your DH help you?

Thank you. I didn't know disability support at the bank was a thing. I asked all the elderly people I know how they did it and they either were better at technology than me or their dc did all their technology stuff for them.

Dh is lovely but explaining things isn't his strong point. He tries but I just end up more confused than before.

You need a bank account with easier access. I have maybe 5 bank accounts and HSBC, nationwide, American Express, Barclaycard, and Starling

STARLING by far is the easiest to log into.

dyslexia and access to online services is a very difficult problem and underestimated by many.

good luck (my job is helping people with dyslexia)

ETA: dyslexia associate charity may be able to help you

Do NOT put your password into ChatGPT. That is v insecure and it is not accurate for that kind of task.

a bank that works with faceID is good. Getting the account set up is the hard bit but once that is in place and you’ve learnt the system it should be easier.

redfishcat · 16/01/2026 08:57

Can you get a tablet, my iPad is where I do my banking. I don’t have banking on my phone.
I can then do my log ins when I am at home and quiet. I have my login and passwords written down and the number of each letter written underneath. They are well hidden, so a random burglar won’t ever find them, which is easy to do at home.
would this work for you ?

Do not put your password in to ChatGPT 😫😫😫

shouldofgotamortage · 16/01/2026 09:04

Why do you need a seperate account? I get my pip paid into DHs account never had a issue.

Shedmistress · 16/01/2026 09:04

Why do DWP want you to have a different account in the first place?

senua · 16/01/2026 09:08

I'm dyslexic and really struggle with technology
My friend is similar (but a different struggle). She does telephone banking: rings up, speaks to a real personShock and they do the numbers for her.

You need to ask about disabled access.

elliejjtiny · 16/01/2026 17:43

Different account is because the PIP is for my son and only I am his appointee, not DH so the account the PIP goes into needs to be in my name only. Problem is we don't even know if he will qualify for PIP yet so this could all be for nothing. They insisted on seeing him to do the appointee assessment and he was visibly shaking, he was so scared. I just hope he qualifies for PIP after all this hassle.

The account number and sort code is on your card, you don't need to log into anything
