Two questions on Maldives

  1. anyone gone in August?! Thinking weather. Don’t need perfect but would like a bit of dry per day

  2. anyone gone with a ten month old? Thinking problems with weaning / healthcare not flight distance. Baby will still be ebf I expect but obviously will be eating. Would pick a hotel a short boat from Maldives obviously.

a) Traditionally August is the wetter season but tbh these days every single month is unpredictable. You could get a week of sun or a week of rain. Most likely a mix of both. Many people are reporting decent weather during summer trips, and prices are lower than in winter. I would happily go in August, although never have.

b) I haven’t taken a 10 month old no and tbh I wouldn’t. Mainly because I love snorkelling and diving - these are the reasons I go to the Maldives - and you can’t do that with a 10 month old. I guess you could hire a babysitter (check which islands will offer this) or take turns with her dad.

Sunbathing also doesn’t work with a 10 month old. And they are usually mobile at that age so you can’t just pop them in the shade and expect them to stay there!
Basically, ask yourself what you plan to do all day and is it compatible with a mobile baby.

Long flights are also a PITA with a mobile baby.

Sorry but 10 months is a really tricky age for travel IME. Can you go earlier, say 6 or 7 months? Some babies are mobile by then but not too many.

Yes, been in August- out of 10 days we had 6 days of rain, probably 3-4 with solid rain by which I mean it was non stop for 12 hours a day. It was a particularly bad year for rain (also rain before and after the 10 days we were there apparently) and any time of year there you can get unlucky these days though August obviously higher risk. Despite it being less than ideal I might take my chances again if it was the only time I could go (likely in our case as we have other commitments at Christmas/Feb/Easter usually). I’ve also been in March many years ago and had 7 days of pure sun, but it apparently rained the full week before we arrived.

Ive done other similar remote beach/island holidays with a ten month old, when both mine were that age, its fine, just less time sunbaking or snorkelling but that’s life with a baby/toddler. Get a beach villa with a private pool, not the overwater villas as that would be a nightmare with a crawling baby. Most of the resorts have in house doctors if needed and will make you food for baby, you can take some pouches as well and at that age they are happy with bread, bananas, yoghurt etc.

Been three times in August, always perfect weather apart from one day, but it’s a gamble. If I was going with an infant I’d stay close to male, a speed boat journey as sea planes don’t operate in the dark.

Been in August and had torrential rain for a couple of hours two evenings.

Personally I wouldn’t take a baby as it’s so hot, and I’d want to relax/ dive / snorkel, but if you did I am sure it would be fine.

Thanks all! Not worried about the actual travel or what we’d do (unless torrential 24-7) as we also have a toddler and we’ve taken her long haul from an early age. Understand that flight and holiday will need to be tailored (basically pool beach eat) but we’d like a change of scenery , to get out of Europe and to have a couple of weeks no cooking. 😂 maybe not the traditional reasons to go but hey

We were on a Caribbean island when DS was 10-11 months. It worked just fine. We took turns swimming with DH, could both chill out during nap times and he was happy to be walked around in his stroller. In a way it was more chill than traveling now with 5 and 7 yos.

I think Mauritius could be a good bet if you want long haul, pool/beach and food laid on. It’s cooler than the Maldives (in August) but still warm, resorts are bigger with more facilities, usually more kids and more geared up for kids. Journey is easier and less jetlag. And it’s a fair whack cheaper.

Or just go to Greece 😆

Thanks for your input ☺️actually yes also considering Mauritius but worried it’s too cool in August! We are actually going to Greece but at a cheaper time of the year!

The Maldives is beautiful and I will say that I stayed on an island which was about 45min sea plane flight from Male so maybe different to the kind of thing you are looking at. For me taking kids that age there would be a no. It was fab for a honeymoon but there I basically nothing to do on the islands and even though it was mostly sunny it is so humid. The things do we're snorkeling and sunbathing and that was it. Maybe some of the bigger islands have play areas / facilities for kids. I really struggled with the humidity and the mosquitoes. I think back to my kids being babies and toddler and think they would find it really hard.
