Floaters in vision - positive stories please

I’ve had this problem for a couple of months now and am feeling a bit desperate and hopeless about the situation. Some days are worse than others in terms of what I see in my vision.

Please can those who have been in a similarly desperate situation share your positive stories to give me some hope? If it took a while to resolve itself, how long? I don’t mind if it took ages - I just want to know it is likely to go, eventually.

Thank you x

Have you seen the optician? If they are getting worse have you been back?

Assuming no medical issue - there’s been a recent thread on this - perhaps in general health - with lots of advice on how to stop your brain from focusing on them.

Yes sorry I should have said I have had my eyes checked a couple of times - no medical issues there. Thanks for the heads up I will look for the other thread

Have you had a retinal scan done? My normal vision was fine, I had a scan done and they found my retina had been partially detached for some years. It had been completely missed by the opticians when they check the back of your eye at a sight test.

I did hear of someone who was so exasperated by them that she paid for surgery privately to have all the fluid removed from her eyes and replaced with saline. Bit extreme but it apparently worked.

How old are you? I’m 60 and they come and go with me….it’s an age thing optician said…..last had them 2 months ago for about 2 weeks…..time before that was about 6 months previous…only for a week….I expect they will come again

Lunde · 14/01/2026 20:42

If you have had it checked then there is probably nothing serious as floaters are very common.

As you get older you can get flare ups due to changes to the inside of your eye. I had horrible black floaters once for several weeks but haven't seen any for years now.

Yes I’ve had the scan and been examined at the opticians and by an eye doctor - all healthy apparently

Blood pressure?

YelramBob · 14/01/2026 20:52

Have you seen an optician or an eye doctor?

I've had floaters appear in both eyes over the past year, it was distressing as they appeared quite suddenly. I saw an opthalmologist who said they may have been caused by running as the gel/jelly in your eyes gets more liquidy (not his exact words lol) as you get older. I really panicked at the time as I'd not long finished chemo and thought that had something to do with it (it didn't but he did say chemo can damage the lenses).

My dad had a huge one after cataract surgery. It was awful for him. It was so big it would sometimes completely block his vision. We even looked into laser treatment to blast the large floater. Eventually gravity won and it floated downwards and stayed there, either resting at the bottom or eventually disintegrating. I’m sorry you are going through this, my Dad really struggled at the time.

I kept having floaters in my vision about this time last year. I also had, out of the blue, an aura without the migraine, which resolved itself after about 20 minutes and has not since happened again. Eye test was fine. I had a blood test due to some other symptoms and my ferritin levels were very low (15 I think). I have been taking regular iron tablets, also vitamin D in winter and the floaters seem to have gone. I wondered if the low iron / ferritin was the cause so it might be worth giving iron tablets a try, especially if you have heavy periods.

I have had floaters in my eyes since I was a child. I didn't know everyone didn't have them!

Then in my early 30s the mostly clearish ones I had were joined by a dark floater that visits every now and then, the optician got very concerned about that one and I was reviewed by the eye hospital, all fine. I do have a dark patch on one of my retinas that has been there all my life too, without issue.

Interesting PP mentioned aura migraines, as I get these too, usually without headache. I also have to watch my vitamin D levels. But I'm.still here without any difficulties at age 45.

I have eye floaters - I'm also in my 30s. When new ones appear it is alarming (the first time mine also came with flashing lights and I was checked at eye A&E). The second time I wasn't quite as anxious about it but happened on holiday so couldn't easily get an optician check up. On both occasions they have become much less noticeable and your brain learns to look past them. In bright lighting against plain pale backgrounds I notice them but otherwise no issues at all.

If you have been checked by an optician with no concerns flagged my advice is to try and ignore as much as possible.

My understanding is these are more common with age but 30s is relatively young - I am more prone to them as I am very shortsighted (-10!!)

I’ve had them since my 30s too. You can only relax and not focus on them, you can’t make them go away but you can help your brain not notice them and not worry when it does notice them. Stressing will make it worse.

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 14/01/2026 21:34

I have had them since I was little, I rarely notice them.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 14/01/2026 22:01

I've had them for as long as I can remember. A optician comment on a rather large one the other week while looking inside my eyes. I don't notice them. Never thought anything of them.
