Not having the best holiday

I know I'm really lucky to be away. I'm too hot, I wish I wasnt fat (size 16) as would be able to tolerate the heat better. O understand this is my own fault as only I can lose the weight. My stupid feet are so stupid, I get blisters in every kind of shoe. Its the first day and I've got one. The amount of money ive spent on blister plasters, anti friction spray, different kinds of shoes, it doesnt matter. Im out here with a friend and we're going to have to meet up with our other friend who is also a colleague. I dont want to for a variety of reasons. I also said the wrong thing to my friend at lunch, my words just came out wrong.
Ahhhhhhhh

Sounds like you're ruining it for yourself. You can't help your size now so just enjoy yourself. You are the only person who cares about your size, I promise you.

Clefable · 13/01/2026 17:02

Do you get blisters at home all the time too? Seems weird to get them in any kind of shoe!

Re: the heat, what kind of holiday is it?

WonderingWanda · 13/01/2026 17:08

Apologise to your friend, let her know you are feeling a bit out of sorts. Wear a hat for shade and oversized light coloured baggy clothes. Keeping shoulders covered will actually keep you cooler. Drink plenty of water, being hydrated can help with the heat. Where are you and what is your plan when you meet up? Is it sightseeing? Sitting by a pool. Going for a meal?

Berlinlover · 13/01/2026 17:20

Where are you on holiday?

Yeah I get them all the time at home too but the heat and friction and walking lots on holidays always makes it harder to prevent them even though I try everything! Its a pool beach kind of holiday

Use a stick antiperspirant deodorant on your feet. The less they sweat, the less they are likely to rub. Try Compeed blister plasters if you can find them.

Christmaseree · 13/01/2026 17:43

I feel for you, I am an awkward foot/shoe person too. The more you can get you legs up, I mean really up as in lay down flat and lean them on a pillow up the wall the better for swelling. Flight socks and compeeds are my friends.
Are there any non walking activities you can do even if it’s just for tomorrow to rest your feet and legs.
A tip for any readers who get chub rub is to rub some Vaseline onto the bit that starts to rub before going out for a walk, so on both the inside upper thighs.

soupyspoon · 13/01/2026 17:46

Just in case it makes any difference to how you feel OP, it may not be any more easy to tolerate heat when you lose weight to now, its just a personal thing. Try to get your feet up and have lots of cold things to put on your wrists like cans of coke or something like that.

ginasevern · 13/01/2026 17:46

Do you get blisters even with flip flops? If you're somewhere that hot, can't you wear those.

HamSandwichKiller · 13/01/2026 17:53

Sharing sympathy as the fellow owner of baby feet. All new shoes rub in new and unexpected ways. So annoying and painful. TOMS work for me on holiday so I stick to those 😊

soupyspoon · 13/01/2026 17:54

When I was very overweight (which OP doesnt sound to be), my feet hurt in all and every shoes, they dont now, I can wear anything and not get blisters, its quite remarkable

But the very very very worse shoes I could attempt to wear are bloody flip flops. Even now I cant wear them

ICanHearAnOwlCall · 13/01/2026 18:02

No one cares about their bodies on holiday. Look around if you don’t believe me. So forget being size 16.
Put your swim wear on and get in the pool to cool down.
I avoid new shoes when away as I want them worn in and comfortable. Flip flops are a good suggestion for you. If your feet have swollen take in more water.
Apologise to your friend, point out how lucky you feel to be on holiday with them and meet up with the colleague with a smile.
You sound to me as if you’re just feeling unsure of yourself. Don’t be.

333FionaG · 13/01/2026 18:06

Ouch, your poor feet! Stop worrying about being a size 16 and start looking at what's good about your holiday. Oh and tell your friend you are sorry for whatever it was you said over lunch.

madaboutpurple · 13/01/2026 18:30

I am sure loads of us would love to be on holiday in the warmth so why not relax ,enjoy it and stop worrying.

oscalo · 13/01/2026 18:36

What country is this, so I can go this time next year and be warm!

In relation to your poor feet, see if you can get sliders in a fabric, not plasticky material and a size or two bigger than you need. Or as I found, light slip on plimsoll type footwear is surprisingly comfortable too since your whole foot is covered and there's not much room for rubbing. Again one or two sizes bigger than normal. Stick the feet in the bath for a cold soak too to ease the swelling.

See if the accommodation can provide a fan if you don't already have one or aircon.

I sympathise, there's not much worse than being uncomfortably hot on hols.

Flaked · 13/01/2026 18:39

Apologise to your friend and that will be a weight off your mind.

Nincompoo · 13/01/2026 18:47

Have you tried crocs? I mean I know they’re not the height of fashion but they are THE most comfortable shoes.

thinkfast · 13/01/2026 19:03

Crocs, fit flops or trainers with small socks OP. I find I need to wear flip flops around the house for an hour or two each day before I go away to avoid blisters.

Yeah I wore leather flip flops today because plastic flip flops give me blisters. Last year got blisters between my toes! And I got a blister on the sole on my foot today.

Christmaseree · 13/01/2026 22:43

Next time wear a compeed between your toes from day one.

Maddy70 · 13/01/2026 22:58

Croc sandals (not the ones with holes) are literally the obly thing I can wear that doesn't cause blisters
Put some socks and trainers on to walk long distances instead
I do feel you are spoiling this for yourself and probably being a downer for your friends
Grab yourself a cocktail and have some fun x

Talipesmum · 14/01/2026 07:13

Huge sympathy on the feet thing. This is me also. And I’m laughing at the idea that flip flops or crocs would help - they’d both be dreadful and rub bits away! My feet are stupidly delicate. I’m now resigned to lightweight trainers with socks most of the time on holiday if doing any walking around, and I have one pair of ballerina type shoes that miraculously don’t rub but it took me years to find them.

I’d also say - just head into the water a lot more, head back inside to cool off when you can. Some people just feel the heat a lot more regardless of size. And there are plenty of people who would be v happy to just be a size 16 again! Look after yourself and your feet.

I was literally going to say this. I struggle in the heat regardless of weight and always have to sit in the shade !

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 14/01/2026 07:44

Game changer for me is a wet scarf round my neck. My whole family are prone to heat exhaustion. If we need to be somewhere hot, having a wet scarf around our neck, and over our head on occasion, makes so much difference. We managed Pompeii that way. There were many cisterns of water we could cool our scarfs in.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/01/2026 08:48

For shoes - put vaseline on the bits of your feet that rub AND on the bits of the sandal that are rubbing you.
