Fucking perimenopause ITCHING

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 13/01/2026 13:54

Is anyone else itchy since being in perimenopause. Oh my god it is driving me round the bend I am itchy all over. I regularly get hives, my neck in particular always feels itchy and my scalp. I itched my leg so much last night I drew blood.

Will anything help? Antihistamines? Any world class creams I could try (obviously none fragrances as Im now coming out in hives with perfume grrrrrrrrr)

Oh God, I remember the itching! it was awful, made myself bleed regularly.
I tried anti histamines, oatmeal baths, various moisturisers, cool showers and nothing helped. Until I swapped my contraception pill, it stopped then. I later when on HRT and thankfully (oh so VERY thankfully) I’ve not had it since.

I wish I could give you a miracle cure, but I certainly didn’t find one other than pill change and then HRT

Take a daily clarityn or antihistamine of your choice. From someone who fell asleep with an itchy neck and scalp as well last night. Peri is just a delight.

Curious here - what did you swap from/to?

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 13/01/2026 17:29

Itchy eyelids and armpits here!
Such a weird symptom.

I was in a contraceptive pill but can’t remember which one - sorry not very helpful, then came off that and on to HRT, initially tablets, then changed to gel.

Do you have any loss of appetite, enlarged lymph nodes, night sweats, slightly raised temperature? I had terrible itching that lasted about 6 months which I put down to peri. A year later I found out it was actually lymphoma, it was stage 4 by the time it was diagnosed (and that only happened because I went to the GP with a small lump, which was actually the tumour breaking through my sternum). I'm sure this isn't what's going on with you, but I always recount this when someone mentions itching just because you never know, and I do wish I'd been diagnosed earlier.

if you have no other symptoms and it really is peri, I'm sure others will be along with some suggestions. I tried an E45 anti itch cream, lots of moisturiser, very bland body washes with no sulphates in and keeping cool, only wearing natural fabrics, cutting out fabric conditioner. None of which worked for me, because as I now know the itchiness was lymphoma rather than peri.

Gosh I am so sorry this happened to you how are you doing now? I dont think I have any of those symptoms but I am SO sweaty on a night and had put that down to the peri. I might make a GO appointment to be on the safe side.

I have been struggling with this for a year and have posted about it on here. I am 55 and think my periods also stopped about a year ago.

I have a history of eczema (diagnosed chronic in childhood) but have never experienced anything like this intense, all over body (except my hands and face) itching. It got so bad that last last year, I saw the GP twice and one one occassion they advised me to go into hospital for IV antibiotics because the rash was 'significant'. I had to take 2 days off work because I could not move out of bed. It was just awful. in the evening and at night, the itching was insane.

Been prescribed various things that have helped manage it. I finally seem to be getting on top of it now and think I can safely say that heat and my own perspiration are triggers. So, I try to keep cool. Lukewarm baths with a bit of salt seem to help and I have turned the central heating down a notch. I have taken Cod Liver Oil and iron for many years but also added in magnesium recently and I am not sure if that has helped as well.

My GP scoffed at my suggestion that it was hormone related but there's plenty of information online that contradicts that. What I read about menopause itching matches the kind of itching that I have had (sometimes dry and hot, light scratching and sometimes heat related and more of a hives/allergy type of irritation and deep scratching). My GP did explain that heat releases histamine. I am also on daily antihistamines.

One of the best tips I had was to have a gel manicure. Because they coat the ends of your nails, when you do scratch, your nails won't break the skin open. This has worked absolute wonders for me. Simple but so very effective. Or get a 'Scratch Star' but they are pricey.

This is such a good idea because I also have vitamin B12 injections and when Im due them my nails crack and break and god forbid I scratch myself with broken nails 😡😡😡😡 It looks like Freddy Krueger has had a go at me

It’s awful isn’t it! I swear if someone had told me that bathing myself in a bath of beans and hopping on one leg would help, I’d have tried it!

Jowak1 · 13/01/2026 20:13

I totally sympathise! I itched all over until I bled. It was awful 😞 Going on HRT patches was the only thing that stopped the itching.

Mummyslittlegiraffe · 13/01/2026 20:35

HRT appears to make my itching and eczema a million times worse. Although still very dry, I’ve been off the HRT for 2 weeks now and it’s calmed down. I’ve tried lots of different combinations over the last year but they all seem to have the same effect. Has anyone else experienced this and did any combination work for you, apart from the long term health benefits, I’d really love to ease the middle of the night insomnia (magnesium hasn’t helped).

Itchy neck and itchy eyelids FGS! Antihistamines help. If I stop scratching, it goes away and I stop the antihistamines.

I had to change to Simple shampoo and conditioner too as my scalp was so itchy.

Edited

Oh the itchy eyelids - how i haven't got an infection from scratching I have no idea. Then there's just itchy, dry, everywhere else. I had no idea it would affect almost every part of my body including my anal skin (resorted to nappy cream) labia skin - kept thi king I had thrush and using Canesten but eventually saw GP who promptly scolded me for 'self diagnosing' but then apologised she hasn't picked it up a year prior... it's insane. And I'm really pissed off that my mother, and most of her generation, didn't mention it.

Pianoaholic · 13/01/2026 21:13

Had terrible itchy skin since perimenopause which started about a year ago and seemed to coincide with hot flushes.
In summer I was covered in an angry, hot red eczema type rash which wasn't diagnosed as anything specific. It drove me completely insane and I don't know how many different creams, mild steroids etc I tried.
Sudocrem improved it eventually but I get a lot of small flare ups which tend to be where the skin creases like elbows, neck, hands etc.
Eventually I got an appointment at dermatology but they didn't quite figure out what it was, but by then it had improved. The young doctor didn't believe it was to do with menopause but I have read so much stuff about skin changes and itching.

Gahr · 13/01/2026 21:18

Yes, my neck and my back (not the song by Khia lol) I have always had dry skin, but this itching is next level. Drives me insane. I am slathering on menthol cream, which stings a bit but it distracts my skin from the itching. Child's Farm oatmeal cream is expensive but very nice and soothing.

namechange0998776554799000 · 13/01/2026 21:24

I'm fine now thanks @DungareesTrombonesDinos, it's been 2 years since I finished treatment now.

Chemo did actually bring on menopause but I don't really have any itching now - I am on HRT and take a daily antihistamine though, so maybe that's how I've managed to avoid it.

A GP appointment can't do any harm, they'll probably fob you off but you may get lucky and see one who has some good tips on the itching & sweats even if they're not concerned. Are you on HRT? If you want to discuss options and the GP isn't helpful you could always ask for a referral to a menopause clinic

Maia77 · 13/01/2026 21:31

I had that in my mid to late 30s, but not now in my late 40s. I just tend to overheat with any kind of exertion.
I must add that since losing a stone and getting to a healthy BMI range, a few relatively mild perimenopause symptoms I had, have gone.

828Pax · 13/01/2026 21:32

Yes!!! I cannot stop every night!

My fucking ears. So so itchy

Omg THIS

honeyfox · 13/01/2026 21:36

I have lots of symptoms but haven't heard of this. Do get it checked though if you have other issues, I have a friend whose cancer recurrence started with intolerable itching.
