Has anyone successfully reduced their screen time/ realised they have an addiction? I need tips

My screen time is about 5 hours a day which is just far too much. Mindless scrolling and just a really bad habit. I keep saying I need to change it but then I do the same thing all over again.

anyone any tips that worked for them?

Following. Mine is often well over 6 or 7 hours a day and also want to reduce. I have deleted games today and want some help to stop me scrolling mindlessly.

I deleted all social media apps from my phone. I have them on my tablet so I can access them if I need them, but I look for maybe ten mins a day and maybe not every day. I don’t even miss it.

I do still spend too much time on Mumsnet but have probably halved my screen time as it doesn’t have the same psychological design to keep your eyes on the app. There’s a phone padlock you can get where you need the physical padlock to unlock your phone. I’m thinking of buying that and keeping it in a different room to my phone so there’s a physical barrier to me unlocking and scrolling Mumsnet…

@FerrisWheelsandLilacs I did exactly the same and have had the same results. Interested in the phone padlock sounds interesting as I'm still scrolling mumsnet 🤣

Mine used to by like that, i deleted fb and I set a limit of 3 hours a day and most days I do under an hour now.

I’m trying to do 15 mins morning, lunchtime
and maybe 30 mins evening but failing dismally so far!

I’ve found OneSec really helpful.

Yes, it’s a paid for app, but when I asked myself if I was willing to invest that much in the behaviour change it helped focus my mind a bit. It’s also a help in not cheating it because I know Im paying for it.

I bought something called a Brick to try to reduce my screen time. It's a physical device that locks down your most distracting apps and you have to scan your phone against it in order to unlock them. It's been helping as I'm way too lazy to walk all the way to the fridge (where I've stuck my Brick) to unlock TikTok or Instagram! It also tells you how long you've been locked down for which I found quite motivating - if I've gone four hours without mindlessly scrolling I don't want to break that streak without good reason.

I leave my phone in another room now when I need some time away from it. I always have sewing and a book on the go because I do struggle to do nothing!

Ritaskitchen · 12/01/2026 20:47

I’m using be present app. I think it’s helping somewhat.

I have deleted all social media. Even then I was scrolling YouTube on the internet - so yesterday I blocked the YouTube website on my phone.

Monstermissy36 · 12/01/2026 21:08

I really need to do this… I wfh so my phone is always accessible within reach! I need to leave it in a different room I think.

I have a 2 hour limit on instagram but often just click ignore and carry on!

I’ve got knitting projects upstairs and downstairs so wherever I am I can pick that up… it’s helpful but I can still get into the habit of scrolling for hours! I know it makes me feel awful and yet I still do it….
