🚨 Boring thread alert 🚨 re: tin / can openers

This evening, I have reached pique mum rage sawing open a can of disgusting hotdogs with a serrated knife after my latest (not entirely inexpensive and robust looking) Salter can opener / tin opener inexplicably self destructed itself across my kitchen.

I don’t know what is done to them when my back is turned, but I seem to go through what, I feel, is an unusually high turnover of can openers. I’m talking one every 3-4 months? I find that illogical and irrational for opening maybe 4/5 cans per week.

I’ve tried the basic metal manual ones, fancy looking ergonomic ones, I’ve tried electric ones, I’ve tried all sorts of brands and unbranded ones.

So now I turn to you, as the hive mind, for your recommendations for the Rolls Royce of can openers - the can opener brand that is the equivalent of the Dualit toaster - indestructible, long living, unproblematic - I care not about the cost nor the aesthetic!!

Thanking you in advance!

Commenting just to reassure you it’s not just you. We go through about the same number of tin openers and I don’t really understand how as we don’t even use them very often! Gonna be watching for suggestions as it’s driving Dh mad

We have an OXO one, best one we’ve ever had!

This is the holy grail of can openers. There is a knack to using it, but once you've got it, it's the best and safest one I've ever used. I buy them as part of going to uni presents for my kids and their friends.

brabantia! (don't want to say how great they are in case I curse mine...been going about 5 years now)

Saving this thread to read when I have got time to make notes !! 😂😂

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/01/2026 18:21

We have one of these (be patient for the photo)

I got it about 15 years ago from our local market.

I’ve had the basic model of a Kenwood electric can opener for over thirty years. No idea if the current model is as good.

Plumcorkyduff · 12/01/2026 18:22

OXO Good Grips. Superb. Ditto their swivel peeler (not that you asked 😁).

Distinctlydull · 12/01/2026 18:23

I've had the same problem.
The only ones that seem to last beyond a dozen tins for me are the Keep It Handy Butterfly Can Opener £1.50 each or 2 for £2 from Tesco.

TheKateColumbo · 12/01/2026 18:25

Another vote for Brabantia, I’ve had mine since I got my first house 25 years ago.

I’ve gone through several of those. Perhaps, and only perhaps, it’s user error….

Thanks so much all, I’ve added the oxo good grips, the nogent and the lantana to my basket. 🤞🏼

Mine was useless after a few uses.

I now use one that cost 65p.

TheGirlattheBack · 12/01/2026 19:54

Oxo good grips - had mine 20+ years.

Somersetbaker · 12/01/2026 19:56

Culinaire Magic for me, but most cans seem to be ringpull nowadays. Does cornbeef still come in a can with a key, now that could be a challenge.

So my teenager with Arfid will only eat a particular brand of hotdogs out of a can without a ring pull and most of the tuna we eat from a can comes without a ring pull too. In the year of the lawd 2026!!!

I recently put back a tin of fancy-looking sardines because I couldn't be bothered with the drama of opening them.

TonTonMacoute · 13/01/2026 17:27

Another vote for the OXO Good Grips one.

Zhu · 13/01/2026 17:30

Another Oxo Good Grips. I reckon mine is nearly 20 years old.

Paperwhite209 · 13/01/2026 17:54

Brabantia hands down.

Have had my current one ten years, the other was well in its teens when I left it XH and afaik could still be going.
