Help for school residential sleep aid

Tereseta · 11/01/2026 20:50

My DD 9 is going on her residential next month and is worried about sleeping. She normally has alexa playing white noise and has had problems with sleepovers with friends snoring etc. They will be in bunk rooms and I was hoping someone would be able to recommend child sleep ear plugs that are non electrical. She knows she won't have the white noise but blocking out some of the noise may help.
Any other suggestions welcome also!

Could she have headphones playing white noise?

tumbletoast · 11/01/2026 20:58

How many nights is it?

Tereseta · 11/01/2026 21:06

It's for 2 nights and they are not allowed any electronics.

I have told her this but she is over thinking it now. They had a residential in year 2 and there were problems sleeping then so I think it is on her mind.

Could she use wax earplugs? They are enormous but she could take one and divide in two, maybe practicing at home first? And you mold them to your ear shape so they might work quite well.

I would also recommend practicing without the noise at home sometimes, as otherwise the difference can be quite jarring.

Ear loop plugs (search on amazon) they are comfortable and amazing at blocking out noise

MrsLizzieDarcy · 11/01/2026 21:22

My middle grand daughter has just been on one. They were awake until 3am the first night, the second night they were all out like lights by 9pm. It's a terrible habit for a 9 year old OP to have to listen to noise to go to sleep. Get her some Loop ear plugs, they come with loads of ear fittings.

Maybe she should try sleeping without the Alexa now to get used to it. I think I wok do say to her that she will be tired so that will help and that it’s a part of camp, sleeping in the same room and talking with your friends. It’s supposed to be different rather than just the same as at home.

Loop ear plugs are a great idea. They are quite cool as well.

Silicone ear plugs.

Smartiepants79 · 11/01/2026 21:27

silicone or wax earplugs.

Loops! My son also sleeps with white noise playing but if we go away or in an unfamiliar place, his Loops help hugely.

I think this is an opportunity for you to teach her how to manage normal worries rather than avoiding them with gadgets. That's just reinforcing that she's right to be worrying, when she isn't.

Mack’s silicone pillow soft earplugs are incredible, so comfortable to wear and they cut out noise so well. I’ve worn them for years and years to sleep on planes.

But it isn't abnormal to struggle to sleep if other people are making noise? It's well within a range of normal sleep based feelings. Why would it be a problem to take earplugs with you to try and maximise your chances of a good night's sleep? That's what I do on aeroplanes or trains or even in hotels/staying at people's houses, and so do plenty of other people I know.

They've done studies and people sleep more lightly when they're in an unfamiliar place, so sounds are probably more likely to wake them up than when they're at home.
