Clothing in shows like traitors.

No spoilers please, I'm behind and the treachery is irrelevant to this thread.

Do the contestants get a clothing allowance? Or do the BBC dress them? Or are they just wearing their old gear from Primark?

What a random question! I suspect they are just wearing their own clothes. Probably no requirement for them to be from Primark.

Sunnysidegold · 12/01/2026 06:37

I assumed they were their own clothes but don't know. I was thinking the other night about some lovely outfits on it and thought thank goodness I'm not on it because I wouldn't have enough outfits and would be in jeans and a fleece every show.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/01/2026 06:47

People probably bought a nice new outfit because they were going to be on the telly.

I have noticed some particularly nice clothes on some of the contestants on this season of the traitors. Stephen's cashmere jumper and Harriet s scarf and Jessie's knitwear particularly stand out. I suspect they just put a lot of thought into what they wanted to wear on TV rather than the show itself helping them with their looks, though.

Redcliffe1 · 12/01/2026 06:54

I remember one of the celebrities on big brother talking about going out and buying a ton of clothes just before the show so he could look good - I think that would be the case for most people going on a show like the traitors too.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/01/2026 07:23

People buy a new outfit for the work do so why wouldn't they for something big like The Traitors, I wouldn't be going on in my sale M&S joggers

Placestogo · 12/01/2026 07:26

On a similar note, do they do their own har on tbe show? They all look like they have had a fresh blow dry

reluctantbrit · 12/01/2026 07:34

There will be at least certain rules and restrictions. There can't be anything offensive, slogans, logos, political and I assume football shirts are a no.

There are also issues with patterns, colours and fabric when it comes to be on camera. DH was filmed during a presentation for a conference and received a long list of what not to wear.

So I would assume they will have a wardrobe department which will oversee it and supply accessories and items to keep them looking good and to cover any mishaps.

DC555 · 12/01/2026 07:42

I would imagine they get a clothing budget for anything required for the tasks at least. They’re often all wearing similar coloured sports wear.

latetothefisting · 12/01/2026 07:46

I read an article saying there are stylists they discuss their personal style and brand they like with -so I imagine its a mix of bringing their own stuff and some stuff (like for the tasks) brought by the production company.

Edited - I'm sure the article I read was about last years contestants but this one says something similar https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2024/jan/26/wardrobe-treachery-how-the-traitors-contestants-use-fashion-to-deceive

I was an in a TV show once - it had several episodes and I had to be myself but smart, think 'mother of the bride in a bride show', or 'expert commentator in a history show'.

A stylist came to my house and looked through everything I had and said what she thought suited me and looked good on tv. Then we went to the shops and bought about 6 new things to mix and match with the pieces I had. So I had two weeks worth of outfits and looked like me but really good!

The clothes were block colours and bright, and it was really interesting how she put different things together- stuff in my own wardrobe I would never wear together. And all my shapewear every day!

Also what stood out is she went through my jewellery and where I might wear earrings or a necklace or a ring on a daily basis, she got ALLLL my bangles, bracelets, necklaces, and stacked them so I felt I was wearing everything, super bling. In the show though it didn't look too much.

Same with makeup I had an absolute full face and a huge bag I took with me to shooting every day for a month and had to touch up the whole time. More makeup than my wedding.

I have not been a contestant on the traitors.

I have however been in several things as an extra, wearing my own clothes. There is always a brief. For the BBC the main requirement is no branding which is why you will never see someone in a drama wearing a hoodie with a massive adidas logo across the front or similar. Usually as an extra we are asked not to wear neon or something very striking as you are there are background not a main character but that is not the case in the traitors. They will also have been told to avoid narrow stripes or checks which can distort on camera.

I did notice that when they did one of the tasks they had all been provided with plain, unbranded black leggings/hoodies/joggers.

FruityFrog · 12/01/2026 21:28

It was the black outfits that piqued my interest. Some were wearing identical black sweatshirts with hoods and a little brand name on the chest that occasionally caught the light.
Thanks everyone, I'm satisfied 😁

if I was on a show I’d put a lot of effort into my wardrobe before hand (and probably look awful!). It doesn’t surprise me that people have brought some nice items with them. I thought Frankie from series three was always particularly well dressed, for example.

RessicaJabbit · 12/01/2026 21:36

They mentioned this kind of thing in The Rest Is Entertainment. Apparently a lot of quiz show contestants are very grateful..they bring in 3 or 4 changes if clothes, and they get styled by a team, sometimes provided with clothes from wardrobe etc.

Apparently some will change their clothing and makeup style because of the suggestions from the stylist.....they kind of get a free style session I suppose!

napody · 12/01/2026 21:41

Really mean of us but as a family we did chuckle about Aubrey being murdered first a couple of series ago. He'd clearly brought a huge suitcase of incredible suits and outfits and only got to wear one of them!

See, I noticed that they were all wearing black for a task, but that it was all different clothing, for example, some were wearing black hoodies, but some were just wearing black sweatshirts and Rachel even had a black vest underneath an off-the shoulder black top.

So just assumed that they had all been asked to bring different sets of clothing for the different tasks. So in this case, bring black clothing. And for example, the funeral tasks in previous series, asked to bring funeral attire!

TraitorsFan · 12/01/2026 21:47

Someone in the Celebrity Traitors said she’d brought a full wardrobe of interesting clothes but didn’t get to wear them. IIRC it was Paloma Faith, who went out first.
