Expensive weekend trip.....

Catbrations · 11/01/2026 12:12

My partner booked a surprise trip to Prague as a Christmas present for me. I love this and it's so thoughtful. It will be good to spend time together.

This is turning out to be somewhat expensive for me and this is before we even go.

I have a cabin bag already but it's slightly larger than Ryanairs sizing and I know they are checking bags sizes more often. So I had to get a new cabin bag that cost about 55.

It's snowing and icy over there now and I was not ready or prepared for weatherproofing myself for a weekend in the cold. I had to get some merino base layers for my trip. I also had to get new shoes that would provide better traction and provide me with better protection from the wet snow or rain. I don't know if the snow will be clear by when we go. Next week reads approx -2 to 3 in low to high temps. These shoes were likely something that I needed anyways for our own Spring just in case we get a cold Spring.

I had to get a few other little bits and pieces too for this trip.

My jacket is questionable. It's a softshell fabric and I got wet a few times at home with it and I hate it when it gets wet. I think I might need a new jacket. I see see a waterproof and breathable and insulating jacket onlime for 100. I am thinking about getting this.

My partner is someome who usually packs light as if it's a badge of honour and something to get one up on me about. He's someone who usually always never prepared himself properly for these kind of things. His daily outfit is usually jeans and a t-shirt. He's not reading up about the weather and how to dress for the cold. I got him a base layer merino long sleeved t-shirt. He wont wear the merino pants base layer.

So all of this is all adding up.

He doesn't have proper shoes and I don't know if he will get proper shoes.
I bought him wool socks before but I don't know if he still has them or not. I don't know if I need to buy him more wool socks for our trip.

I am half thinking about going into town later today to get wool socks for him but at this stage, my spending is getting a little bit heavy. I don't know if is should just stop with the spending now. I think he's hoping to go to town, at the last minute on the morning we are due to leave to pick up some supplies that he needs. All last minute and I don't know if she would buy wool socks. He's someone who thinks socks are socks and I doubt he would appreciate the benefits of wool socks.

I am getting ready and I am nearly there. I may need to buy a new jacket. The spending is just getting a little bit too much right now. Will I just let my partner get his own stuff from now on or will I help him?

@Hiptothisjive @Bargepole45

I think the OP is panicking because she posted a previous thread where she was planning to wear a cotton dress with leggings and a thin jacket, and was told by every poster on there (including me) that this would not be warm enough. There were quite a few posters very much focused on merino and wool.

Fair enough. A cotton dress leggings and a thin coat clearly aren’t warm enough. OP do you not know how to dress for winter!?!!!

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 11/01/2026 15:11

Tbf it’s not his fault that you don’t appear to own a cabin bag, shoes you can walk in and cold weather clothes and a coat… in winter.

Youre going away for a weekend to somewhere with a similar climate to the UK. You could simply pack a backpack and be fine for 2 days. Most people already own those things for going outside in Britain in winter.

You’re overthinking. Stop buying him things. Stop buying yourself things. You don’t need merino base layers to walk around a city.

LoudSnoringDog · 11/01/2026 15:25

I was in Austria for new year and it was -10 on some days. I had the primark fleece leggings on (£7,50) and these were super toasty

iamnotalemon · 11/01/2026 15:27

Let the partner sort himself out. You shouldn’t be worrying about whether he’s going to be cold and buying stuff for him.

Newmeagain · 11/01/2026 15:27

Well, I think to enjoy a weekend away somewhere cold you do need warm clothing. But then again there are always people on Mumsnet who claim to live in the U.K. and not own a coat!

If I was going to Prague right now I would take a warm coat, hat, scarf, boots and gloves.

this kind of thing: https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E478579-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=007

somanychristmaslights · 11/01/2026 15:27

You don’t need to spend loads. You can get cabin bags from Primark.

Dartmoorcheffy · 11/01/2026 15:32

I walked around Prague for 3 days in trainers, thick tights under my trousers and a thick hoodie and wooly hat. You are in a built up very busy tourist spot, not Antarctica.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 11/01/2026 15:36

Definitely don’t buy socks and things for your partner. Don’t fall into that trap. He’s an adult, he can prepare himself or suffer the consequences and learn from that.

Arraminta · 11/01/2026 15:44

Sounds like you're sucking every last drop of pleasure out of this trip FFS. It's meant to be fun and relaxing.

You just pack your normal Winter clothes and boots surely? Anything else you might need just buy it out there.

If you go this postal over a weekend away how on Earth do you manage a 2 week holiday?

JLou08 · 11/01/2026 15:46

It's expensive because you're making it expensive. You could get hand luggage for cheaper than £100, you probably could have just checked on a bag for cheaper, which would save your complaint about packing light.
If you live in the UK, you don't need new clothes. We get to -2 here at times so you should already have the clothing you need.
You don't need to think about your partners clothing and packing, he's an adult, he can sort himself out.
You're unnecessarily creating stress for yourself.

GinandGingerBeer · 11/01/2026 15:54

Prague is very good for cafes with outdoor heaters selling amaretto hot chocolate/mulled wine/spiced rum etc. you’ll be fine! 😂

Catbrations · 11/01/2026 16:43

OP here, sorry when I wrote a weekend a away - it's Friday through to Tuesday so it's 2 more days. A backpack won't won't cut.

My winter wardrobe is appalling. I am some one who wears shorts most of the year - From March/April right through to the middle of November. So I am not ready for any very cold weather.

Thank you for all of your replies. I will let my partner sort himself out and just figure out my own packing.

I like merino because it's a natural fibre and it's not really a waste. I will wear them again after this trip.

I think you’ve opted for some top end options where you could have saved money , eg bag and merino but we went to Berlin before Christmas one year and it was the coldest I’ve ever experienced so it makes sense to me to go prepared - personally it would be supermarket thermals and my normal waterproof jacket

theresnolimits · 11/01/2026 17:07

Loads of snuggly padded coats in the charity shops at the moment.

We never take anything other than a backpack - we had a week in Norway last year, and have also done 10 days in Canada - perfectly do-able.

Where do you live OP? I don't think many people in the UK wear shorts from April - November with the notable exception of men in the Forest of Dean Most replies on here are assuming that you already own appropriate cold weather clothing.

3luckystars · 11/01/2026 17:11

Lidl do ski gear also.

Check in a bag. Wear a big long coat. Bring a hat. You will be fine.

Delatron · 11/01/2026 17:26

You must have normal winter clothes!

OMGitsnotgood · 11/01/2026 17:31

You must not feel the cold if you are comfortable in shorts in November so maybe you are worrying too much. It’s quite a while since the end of November and most parts of the UK have had some really cold spells since then. What you have been wearing since you packed away your shorts at the end of November will do for your holiday too?

GRCP · 11/01/2026 17:54

You don’t need merino wool base layers and he doesn’t need wool socks - just take your winter clothes from here. If you need a new coat you need a new coat. Don’t buy anything for him, he can sort himself out.

Burningbud1981 · 11/01/2026 18:44

I went to Ostrava in the Czech Republic in late November. It was snowing heavily -3. I didn’t pack or buy anything special just thick jumpers that I had. Tops to wear underneath.
Leggings. Trousers and jeans. Extra socks and Ugg boots / trainers. And the puffer jacket I wear everyday at home.

Cailleachnamara · 11/01/2026 12:16

Jesus woman you're not going to the arctic. Calm yourself and let your DP sort himself out or not as he pleases.

This.
Bring a regular rucksack

You dont need to spend £££ on merino wool ... you want to.

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 18:47

This is crazy, a cabin bag is £10/£20 max and it’s not the arctic, just wear normal clothes and take layers. Lidl has ski underwear if you want thermals. As for shoes, you need decent shoes for normal life if yours leak!

BoarBrush · 11/01/2026 21:11

Why don't you already own a proper coat or base layers? Presuming you live in the UK and not the UAE.

CalmShaker · 11/01/2026 21:20

You'll be telling us you need a set of diamond earrings and tiara next 😄 was this the plan all along?
