Painting matt paint over silk. Help

Hi. Ds hasn't just moved into a new place and I've offered to help paint the hall and stairs. It's currently silk paint , do we need to get a primer first or just paint the matt. I heard a light sand however it's the bubbled pattern wallpaper that's been painted so sanding isn't an option. We just need to freshen it for now until each room is done properly and re plastered

I want to know this too, mine is not wallpapered, just plaster and silk.

Sorry to jump on your thread @MopAndBucketLady!

Also following. I want to paint over a wardrobe with matte paint and my view is to slap it on and hope for the best, but my mum says I should sand or prime it.

No sanding or other surface preparation or priming should be necessary if painting new emulsion over old (matt or satin), although the existing sheen may initially appear to prevent the new paint from 'taking' as well as one might wish. However, it would be sensible to sponge down the existing paint (using a mild sugar soap solution, followed by a cold water wipe-over) to remove any grease before repainting, regardless of the new paint type.

We did it, just need to leave coat 1 to dry longer, we did coat 1 one day then coat 2 the next, might need a 3rd coat depending on how thick the paint is/if it’s patchy
