Utilities costs for a 3 bed semi

Wondering whether what we are paying for gas and electric is reasonable. Moved into a 3 bed 1930s semi and are paying £235 per month for gas and electric. Big increase from our previous new build heating. I was expecting an increase but maybe not as high as we are now paying.

Limiting the heating for a couple of hours in the morning, couple of hours in the evening and probably a couple of hours in the afternoon. Didn’t put the heating on until late November so I don’t think it’s excessive use. Only had it on a bit more the last week with the cold snap. Interested to hear similar costs for comparison. Thanks!

3 bed semi, 60s built, family of four and we pay £118 a month. Heating on from October. An hour in the morning, 5 hours in evening. Gas cooker, normal lights usage, lots of devices being charged

We live in a 1870s semi, 3 beds…..2 receptions ….,this months bill was 170….that’s a lot for us….in summer months we pay around 80…..we have a tumble in winter and use the radiators …but use log burner a lot ( we get free wood) ….we don’t use rpcentral heating in mornings

Ours is £118.84 a month with Eon-next for a 4 bed detached home with 3 reception rooms, family of 5 which includes dh home working all week and new home working 2-3 days a week, plus 3 teens with lots of devices, constant streaming and many showers. Yours sounds very high to me.

Yes - I will add to my earlier comment that I use a tumble dryer 3-4 times a week as well.

I've recently moved to a 3 bed detached. The bill is hitting £300 a month but we are all freezing and I think if I got the temperature above 15C I would be looking at double that, it's normally between 9 and 13C. I'm looking to move again in the Spring.

Bjorkdidit · 11/01/2026 07:32

That sounds like a lot but the cost is dependent on the quality of the insulation, how drafty the windows are, whether you shut internal doors and how many rooms you heat, what sort of heating and hot water you have, shower and tumble dryer use, what temperature the house is heated to and for how long each day.

So that's what you need to look at, comparing with others in the same size house doesn't tell you very much.

3 bed family of 7 £117 for gas and electric with eon next but I also have heating on most of the day/night atm and there's certainly a lot of cooking baths etc aswell. However it does eat into what is saves over summer with them by about another 22 a month

RainBow725 · 11/01/2026 15:30

£160 pm for a larger 3 bed semi. I work from home so I have the heating on a lot and don’t shy away from the tumble drier in the winter.

Marmalade71 · 11/01/2026 15:56

£195 a month for 3 bed semi, we’re in credit but eating into it so the DD will need to go up if the weather doesn’t improve soon. Heating is on most of the day now but the thermostat is on 17 so we clearly need it on.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 11/01/2026 16:20

3 bed 1950s semi. Pay £248 a month gas and electric. I don’t like being cold so will have the heating on. We are high electric users so that only really drops on the summer when I can line dry. We are in credit so not fussed on cost.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 11/01/2026 16:26

£150 p.m. for both. Heating on 06.30 to 22.30, 22c. Well insulated, supplier Octopus.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 11/01/2026 16:42

Sadly that seems about right. We’ve always spent about £80-100 on electric but our old house (1940s) used to cost us £12.50 a day in gas from Nov -Feb. I got to the point where I turned it off in the day when it was me working from home just to save some money but realistically we still spent £250-300 on gas.

OhMehGoddess · 11/01/2026 16:51

Heating set to 20 all day/night, it auto regulates and is not timed. Use tumble dryer whenever a load is done in winter. Combined when very cold like now is max £250 a month. We are well insulated, but not a new build and also semi.

BoarBrush · 11/01/2026 21:17

3 bed 60s semi here. Heating on all day, off 10pm til dh wakes up between 3am/5am. Tumble dryer is on nearly all bloody day. At least 4 30 minute showers a day. December bill was 238. The windows and doors in this house are shite and let out so much heat though

SoapyDrama · 11/01/2026 21:22

Are you thinking that your meter doesn't work properly?

If it is working you're paying for what you use, that isnt connected to what anyone else uses. To reduce the £££ cost you should look for a cheaper tariff if youre on the standard one and then reduce your usage

It's a waste of time comparing to anyone else, they dont live your house with your usage and thats what determines your cost

Itsallabouttea · 13/01/2026 16:02

3 bed turn of the century end terrace with high ceilings and no wall insulation as no cavities. We pay 100 a month which is more than we need in summer so we store it up for winter although even then we'll have to chuck some extra in, bill we've just had was 200. We have to keep the heating on low all day as the house won't hold heat so there's no point blasting it in the morning and evening. In the cold weather it won't get above 17 even with it on all day, the joys of old houses!
