Should this middle aged woman know better

EmShire · 09/01/2026 19:09

On a certain social media site a few days ago, I saw a photo of two attractive late teens or early 20s women, whom I vaguely know, standing either side of a boy who looked about 15 and giving him a kiss on the cheek. Underneath another woman, much older than them, had written underneath something along the lines of "Lucky James, getting a kiss off those two stunners/beauties."

I couldn't help think that she was just feeding their ego, bearing in mind that they are both (from what I know) generally regarded as good looking and trendy, and also encouraging them to value their looks above other things. It also seemed a bit patronising to James (name changed), as if he is a lesser form of life. One of the girls, let's call her Alice, is already not lacking in self esteem, albeit reasonably nice enough.

You just sound quite bitchy to be honest. It's meant as a harmless comment.

tartyflette · 09/01/2026 19:13

Sorry, I don’t understand your issue here.
It seems like a bit of a non-event.
Do you know any of the other participants perhaps, like the older woman, or “James”?

EmShire · 09/01/2026 19:17

I guess because of the focus on their good looks, but also it just seems a bit demeaning to 'James', who I don't really know but vaguely recognised.

Nothing wrong with the post or the woman's comment. Odd that you think there is something amiss.

PresidentMacron · 09/01/2026 19:17

Quel est le problème? 😳

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/01/2026 19:18

You sound like a very busy woman OP

tartyflette · 09/01/2026 19:22

Well, I dunno, perhaps quite a few 15 year old boys might consider themselves lucky to be kissed by two older girls?
Stunning or otherwise.

NessShaness · 09/01/2026 19:23

Oh get a grip.

EchoedSilence · 09/01/2026 19:25

Bloody hell. I'd give SM a miss if you get het up over stuff like that.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 09/01/2026 19:26

Are you OK?

EmShire · 09/01/2026 19:27

Not het up, just a thought I had. Probably not explained very well.

Owly11 · 09/01/2026 19:33

What?

GarlicSound · 09/01/2026 19:36

Well, no, it's not ideal from a socio-political perspective. It is, however, completely normal - you're on social media, you must be aware that commenting "beautiful", "gorgeous", etc is practically de rigueur.

I don't like it either, for much the same reasons as you. Nothing you can do to stop it, though!

EmShire · 09/01/2026 19:38

@GarlicSound Thanks, you seem to understand my post a bit better than most.

Whosthetabbynow · 09/01/2026 19:44

Only the terminally offended would’ve given it a second thought.

@GarlicSound Thanks, you seem to understand my post a bit better than most.

You think that everybody who doesn't think like you has just not understood your point?

And you think Alice is the arrogant one?

Justcallmedaffodil · 09/01/2026 19:50

EmShire · 09/01/2026 19:38

@GarlicSound Thanks, you seem to understand my post a bit better than most.

Why do OPs always default to suggesting that posters who disagree with them must do so due to lack of understanding Hmm

Atmywitsend26 · 09/01/2026 19:53

I mean, I understand. It's not a comprehension issue (if you want to throw the word patronising around you should maybe look closer to home in that regard!) If you want to get finniky, there could be an argument for making sure that girls aren't constantly appreciated soley for looks and that boys shouldn't be considered "lucky" to get the attention of a beautiful girl, but equally it occasionally happening, particularly in this context, it isn't the downfall of society either- the issue people are seeing is that this doesn't effect you in ANY way yet you are (a few days later) mulling over what was probably a tongue in cheek, throwaway comment intended to be nice to everyone, that didn't hurt or upset any of the people it actually involved.

Screamingabdabz · 09/01/2026 20:04

Sounds a bit Benny Hill-esque but everyone should know better about objectifying young women, not just the middle aged ones.

GAJLY · 09/01/2026 20:25

I see nothing wrong with it. Think it’s strange you’ve taken something bad from it, to be honest.

Iceshine · 09/01/2026 20:28

Sounds like your one of them that will find offence in anything, its become a disease in the uk.

Honestly i dont see the issue.

helpfulperson · 09/01/2026 20:31

And if it was a 15 year old girl being kissed by two 20 year old guys would the response be the same. This is another example of the double standards on Mumsnet.

I think the problem is the thread title is misleading.

Zov · 09/01/2026 20:33

Hmmmm, I think you may be looking for trouble and problems where there are none, but are you saying if it was a couple of young men aged 18-22 kissing a 15 year old girl on the cheek the reaction would have been different?

Is this what you're hinting at @EmShire ??? And why should a middle aged woman (40s/50s I presume) have to 'know better' any more than a woman in her 30s, or 60s for example?

I'm a bit confused. The age gap isn't even that big. What is your issue?

Bit of a non-issue.

Are you a bit bored tonight? 😆

LonginesPrime · 09/01/2026 20:34

I couldn't help think that she was just feeding their ego…It also seemed a bit patronising to James

So what if she was?

Who is this woman to you? It sounds like there must some backstory between the two of you for you to care so much about her motivations in making a cheesy comment on a cheesy photo on social media. Is she a rival godparent or something?

Unless she’s a public figure who’s constantly criticising others for making similar comments, I can’t see why it matters if a random stranger does this.

HellsBells13 · 09/01/2026 20:37

Way too deep and overthinking...
