Alarms clocks to raise the dead?

Ineedcoffeenow · 09/01/2026 10:08

I used to be a light sleeper and would wake up at any noise. However, I now take medications that knock me out on a night time. Today, I slept through

  1. my husband telling me to get up
  2. 5 separate alarms on my phone
  3. an alarm on my iPad that was left on the other side of the room so I had to get out of bed. None of this worked. I turned all the alarms off without really waking up and went back to sleep.

Can anyone suggest an alarm that might stand a chance of waking me up!

My dd has the google hub thing screen one with an Alarm that wakes the bloody dead. It’s the loudest thing I’ve ever heard plus it vibrates. My neighbour complained it was that loud 🙈she also sleeps like the dead and nothing else wakes her up.

That looks interesting, but I have Apple so presumably it won’t work for me?

I sleep terribly in the night and have often only just fallen into a deep sleep when its time for the alarm to go off....i can sleep through every single electronic alarm clock/ phone alarm etc

One of the old school 'twin bell' style alarms always wakes me...and i put it on the floor on the other side of the bedroom so I have to get out of bed to shut it up. It makes a horrendous racket, so its not a relaxing wake up, but it works! This sort of thing

Try a wrist or pillow vibrate one - calmer and doesn't piss off your loved ones

Blueuggboots · 09/01/2026 10:29

What about one of the ones that buzzes on your wrist?

I used to have a clock like this, but it ticked really loudly and pissed DH off. I’ll have another look at them.

the Alarmy app, it’s loud as hell and you can set it where you have to do tasks before it turns off, like shake the phone or maths, I have mine where you have to scan a barcode and I’ve set it to something in the bathroom so I have to get up to turn it off

itsthetea · 09/01/2026 10:30

Only have one

if you have multiple options your head knows that so will just turn off and ignore

Ineedcoffeenow · 09/01/2026 10:33

I’m not sure whether a vibrating alarm will do enough, but might try it in conjunction with something else. I’ll have a look.

The only thing that has worked so far is DH literally dragging me out of bed by my legs, but he’s not always in the house when I need to get up.

I’m very hard of hearing so an alarm doesn’t work for me
I use an Apple I watch as it vibrates on my wrist

Thewonderfuleveryday · 09/01/2026 10:38

I have a fitbit that buzzes my wrist. Lumie sunrise wake up light so I don't wake up in the dark.
Alexa that plays radio 4.
Smart switch that turns my lamp on after 10 mins to give me extra light.

My phone is off overnight.

HarryVanderspeigle · 09/01/2026 12:14

This is the worst time of year for waking up. I will turn off anything near me in my sleep, so have to have the alarm across the room. More than one is preferable. I have tried the fake dawn light alarm and it didn't make a difference, but it does for others.

Ineedcoffeenow · 11/01/2026 18:28

I’ve used the alarmly app a couple of mornings and it’s much better. I do at least wake up. It’s still tempting to go back to sleep for 10mins (which becomes half an hour), but that’s more a question of willpower.

Look at alarm clocks for the deaf. It’s a thing

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/01/2026 19:09

It sounds like you're half waking up, turning them off and then going back to sleep rather than sleeping through the noise?

Years ago I bought DB an alarm clock with a helicopter thing on top, when it went off the helolicopter flew off and you had to find it to put it back on to turn it off.

It was very effective!

What time do you get up? Is it still dark?
I have one of these dawn light alarm clocks mainly because I struggle to wake & get up in the winter months.

Might be worth a try to get your body ready to wake up.

The scanning a barcode in the bathroom one is the only one which works for me. With those apps you can normally allow a limited number of snoozes for a set amount of time, which I usually do as that allows me to wake up more slowly. However in general, if you struggle to wake up in the morning, avoid snoozing like the plague, as you're just training your brain that the alarm means "Go back to sleep" which makes it even harder to wake up and more likely to do things like turn off the alarm and go back to sleep and not even remember that you've done this. Plus in a way if you snooze 6x at 10 min each, you're really just having an extra hour of totally crap, interrupted sleep and it would make more sense to just set the alarm 50 mins later and let yourself have nearly the full hour of uninterrupted sleep. It was this last argument which finally got me to stop!

PuppyTroubleAgain · 11/01/2026 20:44

Which alarm do you use? I don’t know how anyone could sleep through Constellation on Iphone/Ipad at full volume. It is absolutely deafening.

CalmShaker · 11/01/2026 21:00

Not available in this country but you can import it from USA.
Basically it is a metal sock but for just your big toe, you plug the other end in and set it. It starts from 2volts and goes all the way up to 10volts. You cannot use if you have a pacemaker.
