If you’re wheat free, would you tell me what you live on?

Please 🙂 I’ve got to do 2 weeks without anything with any kind of wheat in and would really appreciate some help

otoh, I have found that not only did going off wheat solve my constant cough (and other less intrusive inflammatory responses), I am even able to eat Spelt (a form of wheat) which makes tolerable pasta an option.

It is lovely not coughing all the time

Hope you get sorted @TeapotCollection

The gluten free pasta in the mainstream supermarkets is perfectly OK as long as you don't overcook it.

I was wheat free for approx 5 years (mostly ok now though).

would usually have porridge for breakfast with fruit and Greek yogurt

lunch - home made soup and oat or rice cakes, usually with peanut butter on

tea - something based around potatoes or rice ie tofu stir fry (wheat free tamari sauce etc), tortilla and veg

so virtually everything made from scratch, batch cooked and frozen

I make Derbyshire oatcakes and use them as wraps or toasted.
Check the packets on oats because some aren't suitable (Marks and Spencers- some are not, some "may not be")

Make sure if they are taking bloods to rule out things like coeliac disease that you have been eating wheat/gluten every day for 2 weeks before they take them.

Also no point just avoiding wheat if the issue is gluten more generally.

This is good and important advice. Your GP may well be happy to order a coeliac blood test at short notice from an e-consult. Coeliac tests can give false negatives once you have given up gluten, so it is really important to keep eating it daily, at least until you have had a blood test. Coeliac disease is not always symptomatic and is under diagnosed so there should be a low bar for testing for it.

WinterFrogs and DeanElderberry did you have a cough that went when you avoided wheat? If so that’s reassuring

Thanks DeanElderberry, I really hope so too. I’ll try anything, it’s fucking miserable 😞 we had a wedding invitation the other day and my first thought was ‘Oh heck I hope I don’t have a coughing bout’

Thanks for the blood test advice, makes sense and I wouldn’t have thought of that. No mention of one yet but I will remember that

Needlenardlenoo I will give that a try if I have to go beyond the 2 weeks, I love pasta. Thank you

Just had a Sainsbury’s delivery with enough stuff for the 2 weeks, got quite a variety. I have taken on board not to get my hopes up about the pizza though seeing as a lot of you are saying it’ll probably be shit 😆

Only just realised that I can still have roast potatoes so that’s a boost, I absolutely love a roast dinner and we often have one in the week, sometimes as well as rather than instead of Sunday

I’m gluten intolerant so try and avoid it mostly.

i find brown rice pasta much nicer than gluten free
i avoid most bread as i just find it horrible although scholar do part baked rolls which are pretty good. They also do crisp bread type crackers which I eat alot.
i get gluten free wraps as well. I get the El Paso ones.

I've had no problems with Quaker Oats.

We are a completely gluten free household

Breakfast:

Bacon and eggs, gluten free cereal, porridge with gluten free oats or yoghurt with nice and nobbly granola

Lunches this week have been:

cheese and bacon turnovers made from jus roll gluten free pastry for dinner with baked beans

A variety of sandwiches made using the warburton's gluten free sandwich soft squares

Homemade soup

boiled eggs

we also do a lot of salads

Supper:

Spaghetti carbonara made with rummo gluten free Spaghetti

Roast chicken with all the trimmings and homemade gluten free yorkies

Leftover roast chicken and ham pie made using jus rol gluten free pastry

Steak and chips

Shepherds pie

Honey and mustard chicken with rice

Chicken pad krapow with sticky jasmine rice

We buy gluten free pizzas from morrisons of we fancy something like that.

I'd say we just eat pretty normal meals - just swap out things like pasta/ flour/soy sauce for the gluten free alternatives
