Why do business coaches do retreata abroad?

Eggybreadwithnuts · 09/01/2026 00:38

2026 is my year to really push my business. A few brillant coaches I want to work with have retreats and mastermind sessions but most are abroad and quite pricey. Anyone done one? Are they worth the money?

So it looks flashy on the socials and they can make a few extra quid.

WallyWasEre · 09/01/2026 08:52

They fancy a holiday paid for by you. These business coaches aren’t really going to help you, this is the new MLM and they are generally repackaged hunbots.

surreygirly · 09/01/2026 08:55

A holiday on which they make money paid for by mugs

Yeah this!

Firetreev · 09/01/2026 09:13

To rinse you of your money.

curious79 · 09/01/2026 09:14

What is a hunbot?!

that aside, I suggest what you get out of any kind of business coach will depend entirely on what they’re like, and the cadre of people who come on the trip, and nothing to do with the location.

going abroad, or away, is a nice way of getting you all out of your daily grind and giving you space to think. Quite often that sort of set up is nicer and more reasonable to provide abroad than in the UK frankly. Nice food, nice weather.

WilderHawthorn · 09/01/2026 09:16

Depending on the type of organisation you’re receiving ‘coaching’ for, being able to post content from plush locations might make your brand appear more desirable on social media posts. Sadly, social media is a huge part of business brand strategy these days, and the grifters/business coaches have fully cottoned on!

From the sublime to the ridiculous: when I ran my own business (hospitality), our local authority held regular bespoke business coaching and networking events. As much as a trip abroad appeals, I think these would have been more valuable. Is it worth looking into that?

So much to share here! Essentially, use real rationality & common sense as to where you spend your coaching/mentorship budget. Start from your own true needs and objectives and make sure and provider matches that with their expertise & credentials.
As for the actual question - a change of scenery etc can be truly affirming and energetic with the right cohort/leadership.
Others are glorified hence dos set up for nothing but the 'gram.

Glorified hen dos that should have read!

From reading similar marketing drivel...

"A place to take yourself away from your comfort zone so you can consider life- changing action away from distractions. You can challenge your thinking and give time and space to listen to your inner-voice. This is an opportunity to reflect, reset and gain clarity and focus on what's important. You'll be with other like-minded, ambitious, successful individuals sharing goals and life plans whilst learning from and supporting each other. A unique opportunity for guaranteed results in beautiful surroundings - you will come away feeling resourceful, energised and ready to have your best year yet!"

Obviously none of this is remotely possible in a Holiday Inn just off the M5.

Or, as others have said, it's for the socials. 😁

No I dont agree with most of these comments...the coaches Im looking at dont need a free holiday at all, they are extremely successful and made millions. Just wo dered if anyone had done one and what they got from it.

Anyway I may just ask them directly if they will be doing any uk ones.

How do you think they made millions? By gettting people to fund their holidays etc
Also, how do you know they made millions? Because they told you?
The best Coachs I know make money from actually coaching and have proper hands on experience in their field, they don't position themselves as Influencers bragging about how wealthy they are while posting pictures of Dubai

MoreMaths · 09/01/2026 12:03

Maybe my response above was a little flippant but honestly, if you want to push your business, I'd look for a good coach (ideally accredited and personally recommended by someone who's done what you want to do) and spend the money on a series of coaching sessions over a period of time.

Regular sessions with a good coach who will help you to cement your goals, support you, challenge you, and hold you to account over a period of time is likely to have better results than a 'one-off' session in a lovely location.

There are very good, down-to-earth business coaches who don't do this (though I do have to admit that I can see the value of a change of scene and being away from everyday distractions). A one-off retreat isn't going to provide a good enough return on your investment - you'll need to work with someone over a longer period.

I've worked with two different businesses coaches; both were brilliant at getting me to where I wanted to be on each occasion. Neither were pushing expensive retreats abroad.

ImJustFineTYVM · 09/01/2026 12:39

Business and life coach here. First of all, the VAST MAJORITY of so called business coaches you find on the socials are bullshitting. I know of one personally, local to me, that was pushing her earn 6 figure packages while working part time in a low paid role and massively in debt. Her debts were partly down to the cost of pushing her so called earn 6 figure packages.

There are lots of so called business coaches that have switched to business coaching from MLM pyramid schemes such as Forever Living - mostly having failed to make any money from that.

Hosting retreats is seen as a "next level" gauge of success for the business coaches in the pyramid scheme - because when it comes down to it, that's what a lot of these things are. The majority of these coaches have no interest in YOUR business, they are interested in selling you their packages, and once you are paying them, you will realise that you need to start selling your wares their way. The majority of clients of business coaches are in fact aspiring business coaches, whether they know it or not when they sign up.

The lack of regulation meaning that anyone can call themselves a coach means that so many people really mistrust the coaching industry as a whole, which is a real shame, as some of us are actually very good. It took me two years and lots of assessments to actually qualify as a coach, and I am really proud of my qualifications. It's something I do part time because I love it, but I love my regular salaried job as well.
