Weekend away in Prague in January. It's snowing.

I am due to do for a weekend away next week to Prague. It's currently snowing there. I don't know if the snow will continue into next week or not.

I don't know what to plan or pack for the cold.

I have a merino base layer long sleeved top. My plan is to wear this under cotton dresses. Wear cotton leggings and leg warmers and wool socks.

I have an alpaca cardigan.

I have a wool highlander shawl. Not this exact one but one I knit myself.

I have my jacket that is like a softshell jacket.

Would that be too many layers?

Should I plan a lighter jacket perhaps so that I can just layer all of these bits instead of my heavier softshell jacket?

I have no idea what to plan and pack.

Any ideas? Anyone been there or been to a cold place in Europe recently? What do you wear?

Good boots with good grip
Warm hat and gloves
I've been to Prague during winter and it was very cold. It was quite a few years ago mind you.
It's a beautiful city

Cotton dresses in January in Prague? You’ll be freezing. You need proper winter clothes.

kitchenwwyd · 09/01/2026 00:50

ive been to Prague and yes it’s v cold! M&S or Uniqlo do good thermal leggings, tops and socks - definitely needed. I’d wear those under thick joggers or jeans, with jumpers or sweaters on top, plus a big long water resistant puffer jacket (Uniqlo). And a nice hat, gloves and scarf set. I can’t visualise what you mean by cotton dress - sounds like it won’t be warm enough!

you’ll need some warm waterproof boots too - timberland maybe? Depends on your style.

Mumblechum0 · 09/01/2026 01:19

Cotton dresses? Why?
jeans, thermal underwear layers and jumpers.
also warm hat, scarf and gloves

SiobahnRoy · 09/01/2026 01:46

Prague in January was always going to be cold! What would you wear here in the snow? Puffa coat/ski jacket/wool coat over jumpers with thermal layers underneath, trousers/jeans, warm socks and decent boots would be my choice.

canuckup · 09/01/2026 02:11

Are you the hair washing poster??

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/01/2026 05:03

I have never been as cold as I was in Prague. My teeth were even cold. It might actually be a bit warmer if it is snowing.

Bellavida99 · 09/01/2026 05:17

It probably won’t be above freezing even in the middle of the day. Nights could be -20. Leggings and cotton dresses is nowhere near enough. Do you live in the uk? You sound a bit clueless about winter weather. Definitely puffs, boots lots of warm layers including wool jumpers, thick decent hat and gloves. A good thick scarf that will keep the wind out of your neck. Your clothes suggestions sound like you’re going to Paris or London in May - this is very different. Depending on the wind it could feel bitterly cold however many layers you wear. It’s really not weather to be thinking about looking nice - you literally just need to wear as many layers as possible.

garlictwist · 09/01/2026 05:24

I went to New York in December. It was minus eight and snowing. Just make sure your coat and shoes are waterproof and you’ll be fine. In a city you’re always going in and out of stuff so never get that cold.

geoger · 09/01/2026 05:32

Eastern Europe can be bitterly cold in the winter. You’ll need warm and waterproof boots with thermal socks, a good warm coat/jacket, thermals and lots of layers. I usually wear jeans with thermal leggings, a vest, long sleeve thermal, long sleeve top and a jumper - depending on the temps I’ll add another vest to my layers. Plus hat, proper gloves and scarves - again I’ll add another pair of thermal gloves as an extra layer too if I’m going anywhere exposed or rural

Sorry to jump in your thread but I'm going last week in February. Will it be any warmer then?

ElfWhatElf · 09/01/2026 06:40

No February is still cold in Prague

Thank you.

I went in November so a bit warmer than January but not much. Long warm coat over either jumper and jeans or dress with tights under leggings, with a scarf, plus a hat on colder days. Decent pair of boots. And it was fine, I don't think I had gloves but take a pair for January I think. I'd say it's not that Eastern to be too cold, unless you're used to a warm country.

reluctantbrit · 09/01/2026 06:56

When I went to Prague in early December I wore a long wool coat, thick tights underneath jeans, woolen jumpers with base layers and hiking boots (warmer than normal winter boots and more practical). Plus gloves, hat and scarves obviously.

Leggings and cotton dresses may have worked when we were there in April and had a warm spell.

You need a coat/jacket that is suitable for below freezing temperature, trousers, not leggings with thermals underneath.
Warm jumpers with a base layer.
Thermal gloves

cravingmilkshake · 09/01/2026 06:58

Cotton dresses are a no go .

jeans , thermal base layer , clothes . You also need to buy a ski jacket or similar . I bought a carghopper puffer coat fleece lined when I went in February and timberland fleece lined boots worked for me with very warm socks .

MadamCholetsbonnet · 09/01/2026 06:59

Cotton dresses? Are you joking?

Thick velvet jeans or thick fleece joggers. Tights underneath if you feel the cold like I do.

Thermal tops underneath woolly jumpers. Lots of layers. Hats scarves and gloves essential.

Surely you knew Prague is very cold this time of year?

EverythingGolden · 09/01/2026 07:16

What footwear have you got? You don’t want cold, wet feet. I also feel like cotton dresses is a bit bonkers but in answer to your questions I wouldn’t take a more lightweight jacket no. I’d take some thermal tights as well which won’t take up space and you can put them on underneath. We rarely get cold in the uk like they do in some other countries. Prague is beautiful and will be absolutely in snow I imagine so have a fab time!

vanillalattes · 09/01/2026 07:31

Cotton dresses? Are you mad? 😂

Well, I wear cotton dresses a lot of time at home. My plan was base layers, followed by leggings and dress, followed by cardigan. Then hat, shawl, jacket. I don't know if this is too much or not.

Going shopping tomorrow for base layers and new shoes with grip and traction. My partner is not concerned with the trip and the possibilty of cold. He thinks the snow will be gone by next week and it will just be cold. I don't know about that.

I don’t think it’s the snow that’s the issue as much as the likely temperature. It will be properly cold. I would leave the cotton dress and leggings at home and get yourself kitted out at a cheap walking shop - baselayers, fleece, waterproof padded jacket, winter walking trousers are better than jeans, And boots, hat,‘gloves etc. Eastern European countries tend to be warmer than the UK in summer and colder in winter.

Ive just had a quick look at the actual forecast next weekend and it doesn’t get
above 2-3 degrees during the day time. I guess we’ve had a bit of practice with those temperatures here this week, but you are going to want to be walking around looking at the sights rather than hiding away in your warm house.

Negroany · 09/01/2026 23:46

I was there just before Christmas, it wasn't quite as cold as it is now.

I wore a long sleeve thermal base layer, long johns, cotton long sleeve top, proper wool jumper, big scarf (which I could pull up over my mouth), long padded water resistant coat, jeans (I'd probably go with cords now it's colder), woolly socks, fur lined waterproof boots with grip, woolly hat, thermal gloves I bought in Iceland.

I was too hot most of the time. Layers are good because shops, hotels, restaurants all seem to have their heating at about 30 degrees!

carbolic · 09/01/2026 23:50

I went to Prague in early Feb. Wore arctic parka, jeans, warm boots, thermal top and a good jumper. Gloves hat and scarf. We walked a lot and it was sunny and interesting and had a fab time.

Dingdongavon · 09/01/2026 23:54

I live not that far from Prague; it’s -4 and snowing here at the mo.

You need good quality merino wool base layers worn under woolly jumpers, plus jeans with knee-high socks or long johns. And a properly warm coat, scarf, hat, gloves.

Don’t wear ten different cotton/summery layers, they won’t do anything!

Poppingby · 09/01/2026 23:56

It's snowy for weeks or months in Prague. I lived there for a bit and you learn the penguin walk. As long as you have base layer AND warm leggings and cardigans and warm long coat and hat and definitely gloves you'll be all right with your dresses. Maybe a high neck something under the dresses.
