How many people are pudding people?

Not a major question i realise. But I’m curious…DP and I are both mid 40s, both been married for 20 years before meeting each other.

How normal is pudding in your house? I’ve never been a pudding person, didn’t grow up with it, ex DH wasn’t a pudding person either.

DP is a dyed in the wool pudding person. Like, every meal has a pudding.

This is not a class/health goady thread btw. DP and i had similar demographics growing up and pudding was very definitely a ‘thing’ when I grew up, just not in my family.

Just wondered, is pudding a regular after dinner thing these days or not?

We have dessert every evening but not traditional puddings.

During the week we have sugar free jelly with a spot of low fat custard and at the weekend it is either fruit cocktail in natural juice or low fat ice cream.

I do love any type of pudding though 😋 (Just my waistline wouldn't and I work far too hard to keep to keep it slim 😁)

dazedandblue · 08/01/2026 22:54

I didn’t grow up in the UK so pudding for me is this specific dessert
I’m still getting used to pudding being the general term for dessert.

DS is very a “what’s for pudding?” kind of guy. It’s never really been a thing for me growing up and I guess that’s influenced it not a becoming a thing for me as an adult.

We have a stash of different ice lollies for DS though as pudding options

Very rare here. I like the sound of being a pudding person though 😄

maybe that could be my new goal in life!

Oh I forgot the regular tinned fruit plus evap puddings of my 80s childhood.

That's not a pudding that's a punishment Grin

Catwoman8 · 08/01/2026 23:02

Yes I grew up always having a pudding, or as we called it 'afters'

it is a habit that it hard to shift. I still like to have something after an evening meal, but when I say pudding, it could be anything from a bowl of fruit, yogurt, popcorn, couple of biscuits, rice crackers. Weekend we normally treat ourselves to some ice cream or choclate, we don't really eat hot puddings like crumble and custard etc.

Sbmpp · 08/01/2026 23:05

@mindutopia undergoing cancer treatment also. Everything tastes whonky so if I want dessert for breakfast, lunch or dinner I do 🤷🏻‍♀️. Hope you’re doing well.

BeardedBarley · 08/01/2026 23:07

We both grew up in homes where a home made pudding after dinner was the norm.

Neither of us are interested in them now - not a sweet tooth between us.

MayaPinion · 08/01/2026 23:11

Never been interested in pudding at all. Biscuits and cake go out of date in my house. Interestingly, my kids have never been exposed to pudding and we’ve never had one after dinner, but when we go out it’s a definite highlight for them and they’ll happily order a tiramisu or crème brûlée. Give me a warm baguette and a slab of decent butter any day!

Break4Love · 08/01/2026 23:12

Having not been brought up with puddings (apart from a tin of fruit on a Sunday), never having had a sweet tooth at all for my 20s and 30s, I've turned into a pudding person since perimenopause kicked in. I'm not sure I would be able to consider my dinner complete without one! It can be as basic as a few squares of chocolate or a yoghurt in the week and then something like a cheesecake or tart on the weekends. The dcs always have one too but theirs is mainly fruit even though they are old enough now I'd let them have what I'm having.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 08/01/2026 23:14

I’m not a pudding person. DH always had fruit salad for pudding growing up…. But then he found me, a baker. It’s proven to be bad for his health 😂 Thankfully he is slim as a whip and perfectly healthy despite his many cookies and crumbles.

I mean, I would love to, but every experience of pudding gives me the aforementioned shits. I guess I was never trained to eat pudding.

This is odd... I can't see how all puddings would have this reaction as they are made of different ingredients. Are you ok with dairy/gluten?

FirstdatesFred · 08/01/2026 22:41

"Yogurt or fruit" my mum used to say; apart from Sunday lunch when it was crumble or a sponge pudding.

Now I say the same thing, I also say "pudding is a privilege not a right"

Yes I like something to round off a meal usually yogurt or fruit. If we are eating out or have visitors we have a nice pudding. I would rather have main and pudding and not starter.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/01/2026 23:37

I grew up with puddings (often rice pudding or custard with sliced banana in) but I don’t do puddings at home unless we’re hosting a meal. I quite often eat some cake or chocolate after my dinner though so I suppose that’s pudding.

madaboutpurple · 08/01/2026 23:37

I am a pudding person ,and a friend of mine is the same. When we go for a meal we firstly find out what the range of puddings are. I prefer a pudding rather than a starter.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/01/2026 23:41

If we go out to eat, I have tough decisions to make because I love starters and I love puddings. The main course is probably the least exciting bit for me and I can’t manage three courses. Clearly I should just be having starter and pudding when I go out but it would feel rude/rebellious to order just that in a restaurant 😂

augustusglupe · 08/01/2026 23:47

I’m a pudding person. I loved school dinner pudding. At home it was usually jelly & evap although now and again mum would make one of her trifles, with blancmange instead of custard. I still love pud.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/01/2026 05:58

Chocolate
cake
pie
cookies

rainandshine38 · 09/01/2026 06:10

I was a pudding person. I’m not now I’m on wet. DH is still a pudding person. Daughters are not. There’s too many calories in a meal with a pudding unfortunately for most people.

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/01/2026 06:13

Yes, I was brought up with puddings. Be that a home made crumble/pie with custard, or a yogurt, but always pudding.

My mum made trifle with blamanche too, I prefer it.

MinnieMountain · 09/01/2026 06:34

I love proper puddings, but I'm a 47 year old woman so I rarely have them. When I eat out it has to be a cracker of a pudding to be worth the calories (the marmalade bread and butter pudding at Mum's in Edinburgh for example).

DH and I both grew up with fruit for afters and something baked on a weekend. DH and DS both prefer chocolate now which means I only make a pudding when we have guests.

RedRiverShore6 · 09/01/2026 06:37

I love pudding and have a very sweet tooth, I don't like savoury much, so on two course meal will always choose pudding over starters

Lulu1919 · 09/01/2026 06:43

I love a pudding
Husband not so bothered
We have fresh fruit and Greek yogurt most evenings ....about an hour after our meal
Every now and then I'll make a crumble ...yummy
But we don't have pudding daily or even weekly

Cryingatthegym · 09/01/2026 06:44

My kids are in the habit of having 'pudding' after every meal from being at nursery, but it's usually fruit and yoghurt, or very occasionally rice pudding in winter or an ice lolly in summer.

Sometimes at the weekend I'll buy a dessert of some sort, but not often. If we've got family over and I'm cooking a roast then I'd probably do an apple pie with custard.

You've made me want pudding now OP, thanks!
