Received a bottle of perfume in the post that I didn't order and have no idea from whom

Pretty much as the title says.
Received a bottle of Guess Seductive eau de toilette 75ml through the post yesterday.
Not something I've ordered, not something that anybody likely to send me a present has sent me (or would send me - not a scent I'd wear or had even heard of), not a prize from any competition I might have tried...
The packaging had my full name and address on it and it came from somewhere called NPX Wholesale ltd. I've emailed them but no reply.
I've checked my bank account and I haven't bought it accidentally.
Just a bit of a mystery and wondered whether any MNer could shed any light on it or has any bright ideas about its origin 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you need to Guess who wants to Seduce you.

BertieBotts · 08/01/2026 13:58

Could be a case of brushing? Although they usually send something with much less value than perfume.

Could be a computer error perhaps?

Bjorkdidit · 08/01/2026 14:01

I wouldn't use it, it could be anything.

You should probably report it to Action Fraud as a potential brushing scam.

It's also concerning if it's fake, that potentially dangerous substances are being sent to members of the public.

This. Do not use it, it could be anything.

MsOtisReflects · 08/01/2026 14:09

(Aside from that, and even assuming you have no shadowy Russian enemies, I wouldn’t touch it at all. I’d probably dispose of the package using rubber gloves.)

And then delete and change all your codes and passwords.

purplecorkheart · 08/01/2026 14:11

Could be an error? Have you ordered anything that could be potentially coming from a fullfillment company that they may have mixed up. Amazon third party sellers etc. Could be a brushing scam

As others said do not use it. Not worth the risk.

Is there anyone you can think of that would use your house as delivery service?

Bjorkdidit · 08/01/2026 14:21

Just thinking how easy it would be for a 'bad person' to cause mass deaths if they wanted to.

Just send out a load of fake perfume laced with poison and you only need a few people to open it and have a sniff.....

MonsteraDeliciosa · 08/01/2026 14:28

Don't use it!
I'd hold on to it for a week or two in case someone approaches you about it, but then dispose of it.

LaMarschallin · 08/01/2026 14:28

Ooh!
I'd never heard of brushing so will report it to the appropriate place.
Definitely have no intention of using it. I've handled the cardboard box it came in as I thought it was my delivery from Skin&Me (that came today) but haven't taken the cellophane off the actual perfume box.
I did ordered some things from Amazon recently but have checked that the order is correct and the appropriate amount has been taken.

Wouldn't that be intriguing?!
You don't sound as cynical as your name suggests 😀

No. Anybody who might do that would be among the people I've asked about it already. My first bet was DH as our anniversary is quite soon but it's not something I'd wear and he's adamant it's not from him, besides which we've also already decided on presents which are on the theme of our anniversary (like silver for 25th or whatever).

OP posts:
Mizztikle · 08/01/2026 14:37

contact the company and make sure its legit and its definitely from them, may be a Christmas present and the person is waiting until you receive it to let you know its from them.
I'd hold onto it for a bit and see.

NewUserName2244 · 09/01/2026 17:02

I reckon someone you know has ordered this for themselves and accidentally sent it to the wrong address - easy to do as Amazon sometimes randomly tries to send things to the last address you sent things to.
Did anyone Amazon you your Christmas presents? If so I’d ask them if they’re missing a perfume…..

Am I super naive? I've had what I assume was a brushing parcel, it would never in a million years have occurred to me that that would mean that all my passwords had been compromised.

It would take me hours to change them all, I probably couldnt even come up with a full list of websites I have accounts on 😀

FrightfulNightfull · 09/01/2026 18:51

I know it’s not an identical scenario OP - I sent no less than 3 books (part of Christmas presents) to one of my sister’s old addresses via Amazon. I felt awful for the poor recipients probably thinking someone was targeting them!
Its weird as it has your name on it..
Anyone liable to play a stupid prank?

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2026 20:45

Can't think of any potential pranksters and I think I've asked everyone I can think of that may send me something from Amazon, or, indeed, buy something for themselves but would have my name and address as an option and accidentally click on it.
It's a bit of an expensive prank too. This scent seems to be priced between £20 and £30. I realise there are much more expensive ones but I think it's a hefty amount to pay for a joke and something that won't get used. I've got my favourite brands and anyone who knows me fairly well would know that.
I'm racking my brains to think if I've entered any competitions or raffles, but the only one I remember is a cryptic crossword one for a weekend break. Don't think there were any runners up prizes.

Lovemybunnies · 09/01/2026 20:48

Don’t use it unless you find out who sent it. Don’t forget Dawn Sturgess and what happened to her after the Skripals were poisoned in Salisbury.

I don't think it means your passwords are compromised. Though TBH most passwords have been compromised at some point or another, especially if you've been on the internet for 20+ years, some of your passwords will definitely have been leaked. You should change them regularly on anything sensitive anyway.

CalmShaker · 09/01/2026 20:53

If it's from Russia please do not go putin it on

Callalilly2016 · 09/01/2026 20:56

Amesbury poisonings springs to mind. I wouldn’t use random perfume that just turned up unless I can authenticate the source. It could be anything. Most likely a cheap knock off that would smell suspect and irritate your skin.

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2026 20:59

I really have no intention of using it.
I took it out of the cardboard packaging but it's still in its cellophane.

OP posts:
ahagwearsapointybonnet · 09/01/2026 21:26

Sounds like a brushing scam and the perfume's probably fake, IMO. I got randomly sent a (probably also fake, and rubbish-looking) Playstation game (we don't even have a Playstation!), and assume that was one too. If so it's nothing personal about you though, they just send them to random addresses - so would just bin it and not worry further, as there's not likely to be much you can do about it anyway.
