Could a vet deliver a baby?

I'm just pondering the crossover of medical and surgical skills between vets and doctors. I think a vet could do a cesarean in a pinch because they learn about such a wide variety of species.

I'm not pregnant.

I'm sure vets could set a bone easily enough, I asked my dog's vet if he'd ever treated himself and he smiled and nodded and said 'absolutely not'.

Don't they normally stick one of their arms all the way up a cow's arse to help manoeuvre the calf during the delivery?

I'm not sure that most women would particularly relish that when giving birth...

A) - Its not their "arse" and B) probably not hugely different to a midwife testing how dilated you are - not as far up sure but kind of the same. I believe there are occasions where a midwife might have to move a baby into a better position too - so - sure not much different to a vet.

I always think the vets is nicer than the Dr's. If sick I would rather see the vet, same day appointment, xray machines on site, all the staff love the patients and make a huge fuss of them.

And there are treats! I don't get given a nice treat when I've been good at the doctor's, whereas my dog is stuffed with treats when she behaves at the vets.

Thinking about it that's probably because it's more unusual for her to be good for the vet than for me to be nice to the doctor.

I guess the anatomy is pretty much the same as a big monkey right? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂

I'm not sure how many big monkeys my local vets treat?

😁

My dentist just gave me a SpongeBob sticker for being so brave. Ridiculously touched despite being 46 yo.

In the UK, it seems anyone can do anything. For example, a butcher might deliver a baby since they’re familiar with large mammal anatomy 😂

I would love it if they said to me' who was a good girl then'. 😊

My husband delivered my baby (no medical quals) but tbh ,as the baby was coming out anyway, had he not been there I’d have just had to sort myself out.
It’s like people say about tube train drivers isn’t it, they’re paid not for the day to day job , but to know what to do when things go wrong . I think delivering a baby for a normal birth isn’t particularly difficult, but it takes an experienced person to know what to do if things go wrong.

SexyFrenchDepression · 08/01/2026 10:21

My dog wee'd on the receptionist and vet yesterday as they were so excited to have all the fuss. I'm not sure a doctor would have been so happy had a human done that, they took it as the ultimate compliment 😂

I imagine a vet would be much more able to use their advanced skills on a human (eg surgery) not sure the other way round though.

But surely during training they must learn about each category of animal right?
Reptiles, birds, small mammals, large mammals?
Or is there different types of vet training?
Like if you know you want to be a vet in a normal, small practice, then you only learn about the typical pets?
Or if you know you want to be a farm/zoo vet you do different training on the wider variety of animals?
I have no idea 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Playingvideogames · 08/01/2026 10:25

I remember a vet doing a limb transplant on an escaped prisoner in Prison Break

Drs occasionally do c sections on primates. Here’s one in Texas, but that wasn’t the one I was looking for https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68313089.amp

I believe that primates have been taken to human hospitals for MRI scans 😇
Imagine if one came round and started running round the hospital 😁

I would say that vets do specialisms like doctors do

Prettypinkponies · 08/01/2026 10:31

Dogaredabomb · 08/01/2026 09:39

Exactly! And we can talk to the vet which is a step up from their other patients. Would dog antibiotics not cure a human infection just the same 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes they would depending on the infection and antibiotics required. A lot of drugs in vets are actually human ones (with human instructions in the box which we then have to work out animal dosages!) or are ‘human drugs’ but made for animals. It is however illegal to use them for yourself/people etc - you can be struck off the register and banned from practising!

SnakesandKnives · 08/01/2026 10:33

Vets very much do specialisms and will not be treating rare animals (zoo animals, reptiles etc) as part of their initial training.

whilst all mammals sort of work the same, they do it in vastly different ways (particularly digestion) so a small animal vet isn’t going to be treating a cow for example. It’s very different

That said I’d still rather a vet try and deliver a baby than any other non medical trade! As someone said above - it’s only when it goes wrong they’re needed anyway really

SurferRona · 08/01/2026 10:37

I’ve considered this exact question (well, a variant of!). In an emergency I would prefer to be treated by a vet than say, a dermatologist specialist (or others) of 20 years standing. Although a doctor, the vet has a good solid grounding in a range of systems (musculature, skeletal, haem, respiratory, circulatory etc) in a number of species and would be better at problem solving from principles vs a person who hasn’t treated the emergency issue in 20 years.

GAJLY · 08/01/2026 10:38

I actually believe vets are more skilled than doctors because their patients don’t talk to them and give them information.

Dollymylove · 08/01/2026 10:39

@SnakesandKnives yes thats right, just triggered a memory!! years ago I knew a guy who was training to be a bovine vet 😊

Instructions · 08/01/2026 10:42

It's a not uncommon trope in fiction and film isn't it? Medical emergency, no drs around, a vet does what they can...

FunMustard · 08/01/2026 10:45

My toxic trait as the youngins say, is that I think I could probably do any medical treatment if the need arose. To be clear, I'm talking about end of the world type scenario rather than waiting for the ambulance sort of thing!

Vets train for longer than Drs, I don’t know if it’s true but my Dad told me vets can practice on people but Drs can’t treat animals. My Dad cones up with loads of weird stuff though so I take everything with a pinch of salt.

I think your dad is right - that has always been my understanding as well.
