DS 11 weeks admitted to hospital with a suspected UTI

In a bit of a fuzz - DS was unusually vomity yesterday and the GP sent us to A&E to rule out a stomach blockage. He had a UTI test in triage as standard which surprisingly came back positive, so he's now in being treated with IV antibiotics for the next few days at least until they can get some more details on the infection from the lab.

I always thought UTIs in males were pretty uncommon so I didn't see that coming. No other obvious symptoms like a temperature. The doctor said they might need to look into structural issues but didn't want to say too much until the lab results come back perhaps tomorrow.

Does anyone have experience of UTIs in boys? Something that's bugging me a bit is if there's a chance of a false positive. I had to catch the urine while feeding him which was a bit of a juggle. I'm wondering if his skin might have come into contact with the sample pot, although the test was positive for both nitrites and leucocytes. That will sound silly but I'm a bit worried about putting him through a hospital stay for nothing - several members of staff have expressed concerns about him catching something else here as it's very busy at the moment and he's so young.

Thanks for any wisdom!

Don’t mean this offensively but does he lay in a soiled nappy for long, as in during his sleep? And maybe you don't realise straight away. As this can cause UTIs.

No offence taken - it's a fair question! I'll always change a dirty nappy once I notice it (so the longest would be a couple of hours at night). Wet nappies I tend to leave for the morning if not uncomfortably full and if he seems unbothered. He's our second baby so hopefully I'm not too relaxed from toddler ways!

This morning the consultant has said it's just one of those things - not something we did or didn't do - but I will definitely make sure we're wiping well and changing quickly.

All babies are different, my first I could let sleep in a wet nappy for 4+ hours no issues (no redness, no nappy rash, no UTIs etc) my 2nd I have to change the nappy frequently and always after a feed.
