Why are councils not gritting roads or pavements

I remember in the 70s seeing the gritter out at the first sniff of snow or ice
Every time I've gone out the last few days someone has slipped over
Twice an ambulance was called to local Tesco , because someone slipped over and hurt themselves
Tesco customer service told me ,it's their policy to not grit Tesco paths or roads , because that means they are taking responsibility, and if someone slips they could sue them ..
But our town is an ice rink as well ,so the council are not gritting either
Madness

Money

Springswallow · 07/01/2026 14:18

Of all places to cut back
Maybe this isn't one of them

Where I live, the gritters are out doing the main roads.

Springswallow · 07/01/2026 14:20

Not a sniff of a gritter here

We get roads and pavements gritted / ploughed as needed

yes it’s false overall economy

CandidOP · 07/01/2026 14:21

Maybe, in the case of the Reform council in Nottingham because they have spent £75000 putting Union Jacks on lamp posts instead?

travailtotravel · 07/01/2026 14:21

They prioritise main access routes.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 07/01/2026 14:22

I think they don't spend money on gritters as they are needed only a few days a year. The grit boxes are filled round here so you can do the pavement or road if you feel like it. Regardless council aren't ever going to do Tesco car park are they?

Superscientist · 07/01/2026 14:26

We have had regular gritters out for the last few days. As soon as temperatures drop below 2deg they come out on the majority of roads, only ones that don't get done are the middle of estates.

The footpath through the town gets gritted, I'm not sure who does that and a lot of the local footpaths get cleared and gritted using grit bins or their own supply.

DarkEyedSailor · 07/01/2026 14:27

They've done quite a bit in my part of Sheffield, which they don't usually do.

averychoc · 07/01/2026 14:27

I work at Tesco and the car park and paths do get gritted. It’s not policy to leave them.

babasaclover · 07/01/2026 14:31

They did it in our town but the heavy rain washed it all away. It’s treacherous out there

Ours is a huge Tesco ,and customer service told me on Friday,as an ambulance was there for a lady who had slipped
That the policy was to not grit ,as that means they are taking responsibility and if someone was to slip they could sue Tesco
If they don't grit ,it means they are not taking responsibility, for the ice and can't be sued
That's two ambulances in two days
The car park is like an ice rink ..we'll it was Friday and Saturday, haven't been since , because it's impossible to walk on

Where I live we've had gritters out every day for the past fortnight (Sussex). They come past about 4 then again a few hours later and grit every road which is a bus route.

allhailtheeyeballsinthesky · 07/01/2026 14:40

Your council will be gritting, their policy will be on their website so you could have a look at it and if you think it is inadequate contact your councillor
I'm in scotland and both my road and pavement have been done today, the road at 7.30 which I'm pleased about, but there is maybe more of a budget for gritting here as snow is s regular occurrence

surreygirly · 07/01/2026 14:43

Our has gritted
Last night it rained and washed the grit away

We do the same
This is the reality of the modern world where so many people see every opportunity to make money from bad luck
We have been told by our insurance company not to grit but we did do the car park

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 07/01/2026 14:53

Our gritters do primary routes and then secondary routes. I don't see them do the pavements at all. They were out at 4am yesterday, then several times during the day/evening.

If you're lucky you have a grit box at the end of your road.

Money

Perhaps the NHS should send these councils the bill for treating ice injuries

HelenaWilson · 07/01/2026 15:02

My local council was out on Friday afternoon. I saw the gritter lorry and I could see where streets had been done as I walked home.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/01/2026 15:04

I did our street with DS incl pavements.

Do people not do their own?

Springswallow · 07/01/2026 15:04

Lots of people complaining on our local Facebook page ,so maybe the counsellor will get involved and sort it out

Tesco car park is private land, so the council would have no business gritting there anyway.

Gritting is happening all the time here in Gloucestershire for main routes - they go out at different times of the night according to what kind of conditions are anticipated, so they get the grit onto the roads at the right time to make a difference. It might be you’re just not seeing the rigs as a result. They don’t do side roads off the main routes, though, so it can be challenging getting the car to where there is a clear surface - we are in an estate of about 60 houses, all of which use the one access to the main road, which is down quite a steep slope - every year several people end up sliding down straight onto the main road out of the estate.

Iceshine · 07/01/2026 15:07

When they do grit the roads, it's not gritty it's dirt mud and stones thrown down.

ChevyCamaro · 07/01/2026 15:10

Our council grits roads, never pavements.
However, there are several grit containers around my area. I usually go out with a bucket and do my whole street. I expect people think the Council does it since I rarely see anyone else doing any pavement other than right by their drive so they can get the car out.
I once lived in a country where it snowed every winter. It was expected that every householder would go out in the early morning, shovel and grit (with people doing for neighbours they knew were elderly).
It would have been unthinkable to allow your bit of the pavement to be icy. Someone would remind you!
So, rather than wait for “ the Council” maybe get (or buy) some grit and do your bit?
If everyone does it= no slippy pavements!
