I remember doing cookery, woodworking and something with a solder iron. I can still remember the smell of the solder burning.

I did those in year 7. I also remember having to rush to local supermarket with my parents cos I needed last minute ingredients for my cookery lessons

My dd is in year 8 but she doesn’t do any of these lessons

My sons are now in their late 20s now and did cooking at school.

Soubriquet · 07/01/2026 10:29

I should add really that I just turned 37, so school was a while ago for me

I grew up in another country and in secondary school I learned shorthand and type writing (on typewriters, not computers!). I am 50 and it makes me feel sooooooooooooo ancien!!!

She should be doing them.
I think they come under "DT" these days.
Most schools do these subjects on a "carousel" system where the classes rotate the subject each term.
If she's Year 8 she should have done 4 different DT subjects by now.
I'd be checking with the school if I were you.

I did knitting, sewing and crochet in primary school. I couldn’t imagine children of today doing that, I’m 49.

Soubriquet · 07/01/2026 10:32

Oh god sewing! I forgot about that one. I hated the sewing machines.

My daughter is 17. She did sewing in primary school. If COVID hadn't happened she would have done more in secondary.

nondrinker1985 · 07/01/2026 10:33

Yes all still happens in DT

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 10:33

I didn’t do typewriting at school. Not sure why it wasn’t on our curriculum, but schools in the 70s and early 80s set their own lessons. The National curriculum wasn’t brought in till the mid 80s I believe
It would have been helpful for me I’m sure to do typewriting etc. I had to go to night school to do it

ParallelLimes · 07/01/2026 10:33

All but two of the girls in my school did GCSE "Child Development" where you learned what would happen when you got pregnant. I'm not sure if it needed a final exam given that most of the girls got pregnant and left before study leave.
I believe study leave for Y11s is being phased out now too.

TheNightingalesStarling · 07/01/2026 10:34

DDs have done Textiles, Food and DT. As well as Photography, Dance and Animal Care which I never did.

I did Child Development for my GCSE

I don't think I did anything that schools don't do these days although the contents will have changed for some subjects (ie anything involving computers).
If anything modern schools do more.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 07/01/2026 10:36

We learnt how to wire a plug and sew on a button at primary school. (Im 41). My DC didn't learn either. (21 and 19)

They did a whole half a term of cookery at secondary, made 1 or 2 things. I dont recall them doing woodwork, metal work or electronics like we did. Or textiles.

Coffeeishot · 07/01/2026 10:37

My eldest Dd is 32 and youngest 28 they did home economics and design technology which is probably what you were soldering in 😀
some schools will still offer food technology or something.

We were taught sewing in school i don't think the boys were involved though. I am a terrible and it took me a whole school year to make a stupid stupid apron, i am sure there was tears!

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 10:37

I didn’t understand how to use a sewing machine, it seemed so difficult to me to thread it up! The poor teacher was having a break down though and nobody did anything much in those lessons tbf.
Home economics was mostly cooking cakes and learning how to clean up and wash up.

Textiles still going strong in all years where l used to teach. I used to teach knitting and crochet to 6th form.

3flyingducksarrive · 07/01/2026 10:38

We did Mothercraft. The boys went to Maths and we went to learn how to look after babies. I'm old though.

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 10:40

We did use Bunsen burners in chemistry.
The smell of that lab, I can smell it now !
Plus they seemed dangerous to me and the boys used to try and set light to things !

I did that because I wanted to be a teacher and thought it was a reasonable subject choice. There was a surprising amount of Biology involved. It was a very easy A* though.

Animal Care is a lovely subject!!!

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 10:42

I remember doing sowing in primary school. I was rubbish at it , but anything crafty isn’t my bag at all.
I admire those who can thread a sowing machine or make their own clothes or curtains.

What did COVID have to do with sewing?! Serious question!

IsItWickedNotToCare · 07/01/2026 10:45

I am 52 and at school we had computer lessons in front of these huge computers, plotting coordinates to create a picture. It was sooo slow and clunky it's laughable now. We also did sewing on sewing machines (girls and boys); pottery and enamelling; and cookery. Woodwork and metal work. Not sure if these still happen.

GrillaMilla · 07/01/2026 10:46

Pottery in secondary school, early 1980's.
We made tiles, thumb pots, ash trays and a head

Also typing to music, and shorthand

Year 7 cookery first lesson was making tea and toast, progressing to swiss roll and marzipan fruits
