Nits in nursery so frustrated

Nursery would rather dd be clear of lice before she goes back, which I totally understand but it’s nursery she caught them from in the first place ! They haven’t had nits in a few years apparently, but clearly someone has got them. So I’ve got to make sure dd is nit free (which is proving really difficult to get rid of them) for her to go back and probably catch them again. No message has been put out on the app to ask parents to check their children’s hair.

Combing her hair every 2 nights, she hasn’t got loads admittedly, I’ve only found maybe 5 since I first noticed them Boxing Day but I’ve just looked at her hair again and found 2 eggs. Please help me I am so so stressed about this. I’ve used Lyclear and am going to use it again tonight.

Hello, OP!

Nits are a nightmare in nurseries and schools. I remember my mum dousing our scalps with pure vinegar in primary school, and combing it through. I also had to have my hair in plaits, because you were supposed to be less likely to get nits like that (I don't know how, but maybe they didn't like the style!). Although we smelt a bit like a fish and chip shop for a couple of days, we never had nits after that.

As an ex-teacher, some children seem to be more prone to nits than others. Thankfully, you sound like one of the parents that is sensible and sorts them out, rather than one who leaves them!

edited - because I didn’t read it properly. Treat again after the suggested time and that will kill any hatched eggs before they’re old enough to lay their own eggs. You always need to treat twice. The treatment does kill some eggs and although they’re dead they still cling to the hair so you will see eggs after in the infestation has ended.

Nursery should be informing parenting that they’ve had a case an they need to check their children.

If you're combing dry or wet hair, they'll just run off and you'll only catch the old and sick ones. You need to fully coat her whole head in conditioner before combing through from root to tip with a comb. Most of them are immune to insecticides now, so you're better of using Full Marks which dehydrates them. The remaining eggs will continue to hatch over the next week so you need to keep combing through every few days to catch the new ones.

They only spread via head-to-head contact but telling a 3 yo not to touch heads with anyone is pointless.

Hi, I have been using conditioner when I comb sorry I should’ve made that clear.

Yes she is very sociable ! Absolute nightmare as I know what’s going to happen when she goes back.

The ones I have found since the treatment are tiny, so I think they’ve recently hatched 😫😫

No advice for getting rid I'm afraid, but once they're gone I really recommend a daily spray of this stuff before nursery.

DD is 5 and has gone through 4 years of nursery/preschool/reception and many nit outbreaks and has thankfully never caught them, which I put down to using this stuff (I've probably jinxed it now)

Well here I am AGAIN op. Itching woke me up yesterday morning arghhh. I had no Hedrin left so there I was in the shower at 06.30 in morning with a ton of conditioner and my nitty gritty comb. 7yr old got done last night. I'm gonna do our hair 3 times this week.
Her school has a hair always up policy, so why, why, how?

SmileyMoonset · 07/01/2026 12:52

Nitty gritty comb with conditioner every night I’m afraid.

And braid her hair/tie it back every nursery day.

It is very frustrating.

YIKESY · 08/01/2026 19:43

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud I've been told that nits jump from scalp to scalp, so hair up or down makes no difference

Soontobe60 · 08/01/2026 19:57

Op, have you checked everybody’s head in the household?

Lice do not jump or fly. They walk from head to head so keeping hair tied back is the best prevention.

Just conditioner?

dementedpixie · 08/01/2026 20:03

@pandowo if youre in the UK they cannot exclude for headlice. You can either comb every few days with conditioner for 3 weeks (the life cycle) or treat weekly for 3 weeks. You would still need to comb lice out.

I always treat the whole household. It just takes one stray headlice to put you back to square one.

dementedpixie · 08/01/2026 20:05

@pandowo are the eggs you found brown or white? White ones are empty cases. How close are they to the scalp? The further away they are from the scalp the older they are.

Nits are eggs. Lice are the insects. Lice do not jump or fly, they walk

MILLYmo0se · 08/01/2026 20:08

When combing through - I find the nitty gritty comb best, especially for toddlers as the hair can be quite fine section the hair, comb through and wipe comb on white kitchen paper. Only move onto the next section when you get 2 clear
