Planning haircare for a weekend away abroad?

Catbrations · 06/01/2026 16:56

I am due to fly away to Prague for a weekend from a Friday to a Tuesday, likely travelling overnight on a Thursday night and I to Friday morning.

I am trying to figure out a haircare plan for thew weekend. I aheva fine thin hair and it's my new years resolution to mind my hair better.

If this was a weekend trip within the country, it probably wouldn't not be an issue in that I could pack my haircare supplies and hairdryer but it's not. It's a weekend trip abroad.

I am trying to figure out haircare for the weekend. I usually wash my hair twice a week. Sometimes 3 times a week. Maybe after travelling being hot and sweaty I may need to wash my hair abroad.

I am just tying to figure out a haircare plan for the weekend. I hate hotel hairdryers. Do I buy a travel hairdryer? Or do I wash my hair at home and use dry shampoo? Or seek out a wash and blow dry before I leave so that it might last a few days more than when I was my hair. Or do I seem out a wash and blow dry while I am abroad? Would I need a wash and blow dry booked? Going to Prague.

Or will I bring hair turbans and let my hair dry naturally?

I would leave it totally alone personally.

My wash days are usually a Saturday and a Wednesday or a Sunday or Thursday or Monday and Friday. It's different every week.

If I was on Thursday, I definitely won't be able to stretch a wash until the next Wednesday because I will be late back on the Tuesday. I will need a wash at some point and I am just trying to figure out the planning of it. I hate hotel hairdryers.

So it's the hairdryer at the crux of this? What is it about them that you dislike? As PP said, lots of hotels use 'regular' hairdryers now rather than those naff wall ones, and even if they don't it will still be no worse than a travel dryer. If your hair is thin it can't take that long to dry?

Daisy62 · 06/01/2026 21:25

If you can’t take your own hairdryer (the voltage??), why not buy one that you like when you get there. Then you have a European hairdryer for this and future trips. I used to have different straighteners for Europe and for USA when I used them, which worked well.

Before, I would bring my own shampoo and conditioner conditioner. Before I used to let my hair air dry but not any more. I hate hotel hair dryers because they get too hot and they take forever to dry and my hair turns dry and course like and I really just hate hotel hair dryers. I have access to a few different hair dryers like Dyson, shark, my parlux and Aldi alternative to the shark air wrap. I don't own all these but I have access to them from friends and work etc. There is usually such a huge difference in hair. I want my hair to feel good and silky. I will be taking a silk bonnet with me for overnights that should help my hair.

That's a good plan actually. Thank you.

Can you find a salon near your hotel for a quick wash and blow dry? I also hate having to pack all of my hair care so usually just find a salon near me.

SuperPug · 06/01/2026 21:33

You should be able to use a plug converter for your normal hairdryer?
I’ve had no issues with doing this across Europe.

travailtotravel · 06/01/2026 21:33

Just use the hotel hairdryer.

mindutopia · 06/01/2026 21:34

This is bonkers. Just bring some travel shampoo and conditioner. Use the hair dryer or just air dry your hair. It surely takes an hour or two. Sit and read a book.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 06/01/2026 21:34

I'd wash and style my hair just before leaving.

There's a good chance it wouldn't need washing again, but if it did I'd cowash with the hotel's conditioner (unless they had particularly fancy shampoo, but usually they're shit and I avoid them), dry my hair using their dryer and then wear it in plaits under a hat (beanie in the case of Prague) for the rest of the trip.

BarbarianBabs · 06/01/2026 21:37

I wouldn’t bother with a professional blow dry before you go. It will be freezing there, you’d likely need to be wearing a wool hat! So anything you do with your hair will quickly become “hat haired”. Enjoy the weekend away, stick a hat on your head and don’t stress about your hair.

Sunandfrost · 06/01/2026 21:37

You can fit your haidryer into your hand luggage generally so if hair dryer is the problem just bring your normal one and plug converter?

All you need to do is change or add a wash day to day before going. It doesn't need to be this complicated. Unless just trolling, but honestly some people do need this advice because they don't or can't love in the real world. Xx

Sleepasaurus · 06/01/2026 21:44

Has this new hair care made a massive difference to your hair?
It sounds as though you may be verging on obsessive thinking.

Livpool · 06/01/2026 21:45

Get it blown there? I love getting my hair done!

Daisy62 · 06/01/2026 21:48

Actually don’t buy one there - have remembered that voltage is not a problem from UK to mainland Europe- just take a socket adapter and your own hairdryer if you don’t want to use the hotel one

paddleboardingmum · 06/01/2026 21:51

I'm assuming OP wants to look great for a romantic mini break or similar. In which case, get a blow dry Thursday afternoon, telling them you need it to last as long as possible. Dry shampoo as a back up.

Cappie73 · 06/01/2026 21:54

Jesus wept 🤦🏻‍♀️ just wear a woolly hat! It’s probably going to be freezing anyway!

I'm assuming she's not if she's going to bed in a silk bonnet and going longer than usual without washing it.

I'd just wash and condition, use a bit of serum to smooth it and let it air dry. Then when it's dry spray hairspray onto your brush for more smoothing.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 06/01/2026 22:16

Are you prone to overthinking and random anxiety OP?

All this hand wringing over a hair wash?

Catbrations · 06/01/2026 22:26

Ok, thank you for all of your replies. I think what I will do is wash my hair at home before I go and bring a bag of supplies with me like decant shampoo and conditioner and bring hair turbans. I will aim to seek out a wash and blow dry there but I will have some haircare supplies with me just in case I don't get one. I will sleep with a silk bonnet to help my hair against hedt and dryness from a hotel. Hopefully that will work.

No, I don't care about styling my hair for my partner. I want to mind my hair. I had long long hair but had to get a big chop and I want to preserve the ends of my hair as much as possible and not loose any more length.

Try and enjoy your trip and not worry about your hair. Nothing can happen to it in Prague for three days.

Well, it's not really three days. It's likely washing my hair on the Thursday. Then it's Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and travelling home on the Tuesday. I will need a wash. Either I do it myself and buy a hairdryer or I seek a wash and blow dry. Or another alternative maybe would be to pack loads of hair turbans. Use a few of them to take out the moisture. To a hair dryer to blast some heat around my head but likely not dry it fully and then use another hair turban to continue the drying process. I have been known by my neighbours to walk out of my home and init public wearing towels on my head. So I could walk around Prague with a hair turban until my hair is fully dry.

Good plan, pack a load of hair turbans rather than use a hotel hairdryer.
