Currently sat next to the hospital bed of my sleeping little girl. She's been asleep bar a few ten mins periods since 1.30pm yesterday. Slept through a GP appointment (including a finger prick blood test), transfer to hospital, first doctor assessment, briefly woke up for the nurse who gave her some chocolate buttons to try and give her a boost - only to fall asleep halfway through eating them. She's had bloods taken now and fell back to sleep three mins after. Still asleep now.

They don't really know why. She's had a cold and croup and her tonsils are a bit red and she has a cough, but nothing really to explain why she is so sleepy. She's highly active normally - will happily walk four miles, doesn't nap etc..

I don't know what I'm after. I'm just worried. Her obs are pretty much ok at the moment but I don't want to take her home without answers.

Hope she feels better soon.

Ooofff im sorry, this would worry me sick! I hope they give you answers sending you a big hug xx

Sadmummy101 · 06/01/2026 16:42

Thank you. I'm really hoping the bloods explain what it could be, but I'm also scared of what they might show! And if they show nothing - then what?!

Maybe she has flu? Flu is exhausting, you sleep constantly with that. You get up, go to the toilet and that wipes you out so much, you have to go back to sleep.

I honestly dont know what i would do. Firstly hope the bloods show what is wrong and that it is nothing serious.

I would be reluctant to leave hospital unless they give you an answer.x

how are they keeping her hydrated if she has slept all that time bar ten minutes: is she on iv of fluids?
Hope the blood tests provide some clarity and it’s reassuring OP

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 06/01/2026 16:47

I once slept over 24 hours as a kid with tonsilitis. Even now I can do 15+ hours if I’m poorly. Hopefully it’s just the way her body responds to fighting off an illness and she’ll be right as rain soon enough, but I’m sure it’s very worrying for you.

I hope it's that. We all had it about six weeks ago and I'm only just over it now. She's not snotty though?

She's meant to be on a fluid challenge, but she's not awake long enough, so whenever she stirs I have to get as much into her as I can. It's not ideal.

Hope they solve what it is. Im poorly at the moment and can sleep on and off all day, natures way of healing

Henachoko · 06/01/2026 16:51

I'm sorry to hear this. Hoping it's a run of the mill illness that just needs time and rest.

How old is she? My 20 month old had similar a few weeks ago although admittedly not to this extent, but he could barely stay awake longer than 30-40 mins at a time. Same other symptoms ie cough, red tonsils etc. He was given antibiotics for his very chesty cough but otherwise we just rode it out. Hope it's nothing too serious x

Yes my DD was similar when she was about 3. She had antibiotics for tonsillitis and was back the normal very quickly.

Hope she gets better soon OP!

Great big hand hold OP! She’s in the best place! I hope you get answers and I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. Flowers

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/01/2026 16:55

Yes, how old? My son slept for the better part of 36h once with brief intervals of staring into space and getting some fluids down. We took him to a GP who put it down as viral without further detail. He did perk up after that, but was still whacked for a few days.

ForLoveNotMoney · 06/01/2026 16:56

Oh OP. I remember when my son was about 16 months old and we were blue lighted to A&E with pneumonia. He slept for 48 hours solid, was on IV antibiotics and fluids and then he just woke up and was back to his usual self!

It is terribly worrying but it’s likely they are just exhausted and he sleep is doing them the world even if it’s awful for you. Everything crossed for a speed recovery Flowers

Winglessvulture · 06/01/2026 16:59

Sending you positive thoughts. Hopefully the bloods will show something that can be treated quickly and she will be back to her usual self.

Aluna · 06/01/2026 17:15

Good luck OP, I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

ERthree · 06/01/2026 17:19

I hope she is bouncing around soon💜

xxSxxxxxxx · 06/01/2026 17:23

I would ask them to check for sepsis if you haven't already. Hopefully it's nothing serious but better to err on the side of caution

Sadmummy101 · 06/01/2026 18:01

Sorry she's 2.5. Really hoping you're all right and she just needs to sleep something off 🤞 that's basically what's happened - whenever they wake her for a blood test or exam I force some fluids into her, she then stares into space for three mins and falls asleep again. It's like she's been drugged, it's horrible.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 06/01/2026 18:17

DD had this at a similar age. Spent nearly 3 days in hospital slowly improving. She was fine after that, must have been fighting something off. Never did get to the bottom of it though.

Hope your daughter gets better soon xxx

DrMickhead · 06/01/2026 18:25

Giving your hand a squeeze @Sadmummy101 and sending you both a hug. Toddlers when they get unwell can be scary, they spend all their time causing mayhem and chaos so when they’re exhausted you don’t expect it.
Can they check her wee to make sure she’s hydrated enough? X

Glendaruel · 06/01/2026 18:30

They can go downhill so fast at that age, but on upside they normally recover quickly. My wee un did something similar at that age and ended up with ambulance crew taking her to hospital. Two days later she was back to her own self. Its frightening as parents though.
