Neighbour keeps parking across our drive “by accident”

Our neighbour has started parking partly across our drive. Not fully blocking it, but enough that it’s awkward to get in and out. I’ve mentioned it once and they apologised, but it’s happened a few times since.
I don’t want to start a neighbour war over parking, especially as we otherwise get on fine. At the same time, it’s annoying having to squeeze past every other day.
What’s the best way to handle this without making things uncomfortable long term?

I am on the just keep asking team and if anyone says "in a minute" "I won't be long" or similar say "I''ll wait here then. Honestly adreesing it firmly and politely NOW is the best way to get it settled without causing a long term problem.

Think people have missed the subtly of @saraclara post, correct me if I'm wrong but it is implied that their car will get damaged intentionally or not if they continue.

countrygirl99 · 06/01/2026 15:44

Why are people so worried about upsetting people who don't care about upsetting them?

Because things can escalate very quickly and you can't get away from your neighbours easily.

And if they own the house and want to sell in future, they are obliged to tell any buyers if they've had issues with the neighbours.

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 06/01/2026 15:51

Are they parking a little over your dropped kerb?

Phone the council and speak to the parking fines and enforcement team. Tickets are almost £100. A couple of those will solve the issue.Grin

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/01/2026 15:51

Every time they do it, just go and ask them to move it. They will quickly get bored and stop doing it - CFs that they are, lol.

Strawberrydelight78 · 06/01/2026 15:53

Park on theirs they just might understand why you don't want them to do it. Petty I know but it will get the message accross.

Witcherwitcher · 06/01/2026 15:54

Just park there yourself in future.

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 06/01/2026 15:55

Row of planters? If they scrape their car that's on them.

Thank you @TomatoSandwiches ! My post seems to have whooshed over a few heads!

Love this. Do this.

Bluedenimdoglover · 06/01/2026 16:05

Every time they pull up in the car, ring them and tell them they need move, now, as you're about to go out. Every time.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 06/01/2026 16:08

Either Park across your own drive (which is completely legal even on double yellows) if asked just say "oh i need to make sure i can always get out due to family / work commitments"

Or knock and inconvenience them everytime.

TFImBackIn · 06/01/2026 16:09

I'd be worried about someone's memory if they were having to be told so many times and would tell them as much, too!

G365 · 06/01/2026 16:09

saraclara · 06/01/2026 14:49

"sorry, but although I can just about squeeze out, I'm concerned that I might hit your car by accident"

Do not say the word "sorry". You have nothing to be sorry for. Why would you start the sentence with an apology ?

SweetHydrangea · 06/01/2026 16:10

We have a shared drive and our next door neighbours sister kept coming and parking smack bang in the middle of it. After the 4th time of politely knocking and asking her move over, I came back from Tesco with a boot full of shopping and a hungry baby to see her car smack bang in the middle again. I parked behind it horizontally and when she came knocking I made her wait for me to put the shopping away and feed my baby. She’s never done it since.

Sometimes being polite or civil doesn’t work. If you asked lots of times, you either need to be more direct and less nice when you next speak about it, or play them at their own game and park in a way which inconveniences them so they get the message.

My post whooshed over your head too, then.

Uptightmumma · 06/01/2026 16:17

My neighbour kept doing this. There son had just passed his test and no room outside there’s! I was heavily pregnant I knocked there door down at 3am telling them I had gone into labour and they needed to move the car quickly!! I hadn’t, I just casually walked back into the house! The next day they knocked and I said 5/6 this month I’ve told him I can’t get the car out. Hadn’t happened since

Tara220 · 06/01/2026 16:19

Our neighbour who is an absolute delight screamed abuse at DH because her DM insists on parking at the bottom of her driveway which is side by side with ours, usually withe rear of her car hanging over the bottom.of our drive. DH was trying to get off our drive with his view obscured somewhat by neughbours DM car and was tooted at by a car coming down our road. Neighbour came out screaming abuse at DH because of the car tooting its horn!! So she clearly knows shes being a pain but expects us to put up with it

"sorry, but although I can just about squeeze out, I'm concerned that I might hit your car by accident"

Someone said this to me. I wasn't blocking the drop kerb.

I told her that if that happened I knew where she lived and she'd pay for the damages!

RealReginaPhalange · 06/01/2026 16:29

How long have you been on MN?🫣 no parking issues allowed here without a diagram 😂😂😂

Happyjoe · 06/01/2026 16:36

Put a fence in between?

FelixRyark · 06/01/2026 16:44

Try this as a basic script.

I wanted to mention the parking again. When your car is left partly across our drive it makes it quite difficult for us to get in and out of our drive, and it’s been happening a bit more often recently.
Could you make sure our side kept fully clear going forward? I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks, I don’t wish for parking to become a bigger NDN issue, but it does need sorting. I don’t like having to knock either, I know we all have very busy lives so keeping our drive clear, eliminates any unnecessary disturbances,

GinaandGin · 06/01/2026 17:04

Knock their door at 3am
Fib and say a darling relative has been rushed to the hospital and you have to meet them there ASAP
Can they please move
Will soon
Stop the nonsense

HoLeeFuk · 06/01/2026 17:07

Put a fence in between?

I don't think many councils allow you to put fences on the pavemeny or highway.
