Just (accidentally) ate a slice of chorizo which was best before Christmas Eve...

How ill am I likely to be? It was only a wee slice. It tasted odd so I then checked the packet.

I usually have a fairly cast iron stomach. Have taken two Rennies. Not sure why, but it seemed like a wise course of action.

I think you’ll likely be fine. It’s well cured usually.
Fingers crossed for you OP!

skelter83 · 05/01/2026 19:36

I would be still eating that well into February.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 05/01/2026 19:37

You'll probably be completely fine! It's heavily salted and spiced and whatever makes meats last.

It’s a cured meat with a shelf life of months, so a few days over the best before is not going to do you any harm at all.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/01/2026 19:38

For future reference, taking the rennies was a bad idea. They help neutralise stomach acid. You want your stomach acid to be actively killing any bugs in the chorizo.

BloominNora · 05/01/2026 19:40

That stuff lasts for months - I doubt less than two weeks past its BBE will make a difference (just check it was a BBE and not a Use By - still don't think there is much of a risk, but there will be slightly more risk if it is fresh with a Use By date rather than fully cured with a BBE)

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/01/2026 19:46

best before = sniff test

use by = use it or bin

chorizo we get is usually raw kind, so cooking will take care of any nasty germs.

YellowPixie · 05/01/2026 19:47

It was the pre-sliced, pre-cooked type in the pack from the supermarket, not the ring cooking chorizo.

As others have said packed with preservatives you'll be ok.

DappledThings · 05/01/2026 19:50

You'll be absolutely fine

youalright · 05/01/2026 19:56

Rip op 🙏 🪦 👻

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 05/01/2026 19:58

You'll be okay.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/01/2026 19:59

I thought part of the reason that these things are so bad for us is because of all the preservatives in them? They are practically indestructable. As, I hope, is OP.

YellowPixie · 05/01/2026 20:31

Still here. Not feeling particularly queasy.

Please check in tomorrow morning, we need to know the outcome

AdoreTheChaos · 05/01/2026 20:38

You’ll be fine. We had a tin of custard in November and it was only when I rinsed the tin I discovered that it went out of date in March …… 2024. No ill effects at all.

TheMerryJoker · 05/01/2026 20:43

ive been in the ring with different foods and pushed the use by dates, usually at worse is the toilet, but generally one slice and your sailing for steady waters

WorriedMillie · 05/01/2026 20:46

Meh, you’ll be fine 😊

budsofbud · 05/01/2026 20:55

I think maybe just take a few days off just in case.

YellowPixie · 05/01/2026 21:14

I'm self-employed @budsofbud - can't

BlinkingFail · 05/01/2026 21:17

I think “Best before” is more flexible than “use by”

If it was only a small amount - I reckon you will be fine. Try not to be anxious as that might well upset your stomach more than the chorizo!

PeonyPatch · 05/01/2026 21:18

Meh, you’ll be absolutely fine. It’s not been that long, and it’s a cured meat.

HR313 · 05/01/2026 21:32

I made a panini for my OH today with chorizo which was still in date but packet had been opened way before Christmas.. when I checked a few bits it had mould growing on it so binned it. My OH was fully aware about it and told me to chuck the rest in the panini 😆 he’s still alive after eating it at about 1pm today 😅

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 05/01/2026 21:40

Well, it's time to say something profound so we remember you.

billiongulls · 05/01/2026 21:42

I don't even look at the dates on heavily cured meat
