Any London medics around- how long to wait as an inpatient for a heart bypass?

DH is in hospital waiting for a heart bypass following an episode of breathlessness just before Christmas. He needs a bed in another hospital to be available for the op. He’s stable, which is great, but that means he’s not top of the priority list. I can’t find out how long he might have to wait- all the online figures about waiting times seem to be about outpatients. Is there anyone who has any idea? Both hospitals are in the Imperial College trust if that’s relevant.

What do the doctors who come round each morning to him say when he asks?
If it's a case of no beds elsewhere then I don't think even the doctors can say from day to day when a bed will become free. He'll just suddenly have a bed.

Yes, I get that. They’re very vague and never have any time anyway - it does all depend on availability of a bed, but some idea of how long it takes on average would help . If the information doesn’t exist it doesn’t exist.

I think the information doesn't exist. When my father was to be moved from ICU to coronary care we were told he would be moved 'as soon as' a bed became free. He was moved at 5pm 3 days later. A man in the coronary care unit was admitted on one day and had his bypass the next - he'd waited 3 weeks to be admitted having been out of hospital for a month after the heart attack which put him in there (he spent a week in before discharge as he was stable and able to rest at home). Emergency cases will always take priority. Hope your husband gets a bed soon.

Not currently in London but have been before.

There’s no answer to the question - unless it’s an absolute blue light emergency the Drs won’t know either. Your husband will be on a waiting list for a bed, and it’s waiting for the right person to be discharged/transferred and new ones admitted in order of priority. Sadly at this time of year it can be a while. When it happens it will happen v quickly!

I hope he gets a bed soon and his bypass goes well!

Thanks for the replies. It's been two weeks already, I'm beginning to worry about loss of muscle and mobility. But it sounds as though it could easily be weeks more.
