Neighbours have installed a camera

Hi. Looking for some advice. My neighbours have installed what looks like a 360 degree camera at the back of their house which means I am sure they can see into part of our garden. We have a minor living at the property. We don’t get on with them for various reasons but can they do that and is there anything we can do about it?

They should alter the field of vision to exclude areas not on their property.

Sadly people are allowed to do this nowadays. My aggressive, alcoholic neighbour sometimes points a camera into my upstairs windows, with the intention of making me uncomfortable. Police response? He can point his cameras wherever he likes.

Some useful info here .. ico.org.uk/for-the-public/home-cctv-systems/

you have the right to put up fence wherever you like so can block the view into your garden

They're talking rubbish. He can't.

We've even got issues with what cameras we have on our development - but that's because we're following the law.

Try one way privacy film on the glass. It only works in daylight though.

Bamboo( in a pot) by fence to block the view? Or is the camera too high?
Contact your local council to check local rules?
I’d hate this so you have my sympathy and I really hope you can do something about it!

In particular

Depending on the specific circumstances, the domestic use of CCTV could be challenged if its use amounted to harassment under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

I would suggest you keep on complaining and when you get to three complaints

A traffic camera went up outside our school and a parent had it removed on the basis that it was angled near classrooms in which children might be getting changed for PE. Id be surprised if you couldnt use a similar basis of your child possibly changing in their own garden, which cannot be filmed.

3.2 How your CCTV system affects others
It is important to consider the privacy of others. Ask yourself:

  • where will I position the CCTV to minimise intrusion into my neighbours’ and other people’s privacy?
  • will the range of the cameras include my neighbours’ property, gardens, pavements or other areas? If so, you could consider systems that can reduce intrusion, such as those which have privacy filters
  • how will my neighbours feel about my CCTV?

What if the answers to all those “Ask yourself” questions is “I don’t care.”

You could put them up for adoption but it's a bit harsh 🤔😁

Phoenixfire1988 · 07/01/2026 21:57

My cameras cover my neighbours front doors and my back one covers other neighbours back gardens I knocked on everyones doors and showed them to check they were OK with it or id move them a bit more

lizzyBennet08 · 08/01/2026 13:45

They can tell you that your garden is blocked out on their field of vision. Unfortunately you have to more or less take their word for it though or they can 'show' you it but there's nothing to stop them changing in at any stage.

Allseeingallknowing · 08/01/2026 13:50

Ask to see what their camera shows. If you are not happy, areas can be blocked on cctv. We did this so the neighbour’s garden is blacked out.If they won’t do this take it further.

Put up a fence.

Shouldn’t have to. The onus is on the person with cctv to ensure it doesn’t invade privacy!
