Shingles- on face??

Can shingles sort of lay dormant then attack?
I am currently awaiting a Drs phonecall back with a face to face appointment

Ive had this rash on my face and was given steroid cream via a zoom Drs app. The cream definitely helped the symptoms but as soon as I stopped it the rash/blisters have come back aggressively. My side of face does feel tingly and odd under the skin. The blisters are really sore. I had a virus before Xmas. Could’ve linked?
anyway I know you aren’t Drs! But just interested to see if anyone had had similar.

@thedogdaysareover51 Thanks :)

It’s progressed over to the other side of my nose during the course of the day and also inbetween eyebrows. I’ll check out her instagram

I'd say periorificial dermatitis as well. Steroids are a huge trigger for that so leave them well alone!

I sort mine out with azelaic acid cream.

I've had shingles on my face and can say it felt different from any other skin condition. Really sharp nerve pain like being snapped with a thick elastic band, sudden, painful enough to make me jump and woke me up at night.

The pain started days before any rash and sort of crept up on me for about a week. I also felt very miserable/depressed in the days beforehand - something very unusual for me.

The GP gave me Acyclovir which stopped the pain and rash like flicking a switch.

It’s definitely not singles

My shingles rash looked nothing like that. And you don't mention the horrific nerve pain, just sore blisters. I would bet it isn't shingles but hope you get answers soon.

I had Shingles over Christmas (diagnosed by a doctor) and it was just a small patch of sore blisters preceded by a patch of very sensitive skin. It never got any worse than that and I didn’t have any nerve pain. Apparently my mum was the same when she had hers.

I'm pleased for you.

You'd be really ill and in agony if it was shingles, it's not just a tingly rash (I've had it on my face). It also tends to be around the eye.

Shingles isn’t always painful. I’ve had it seven times (!) door to a compromised immune system and twice I wasn’t at all unwell, just had a sore patch Where the rash was. I was very grateful to have escaped it in 2025 , normally happens in November/December.

It looks like the herpes virus to me which can appear on other parts of the body not just the genitals. Never known it appear on the face though, usually its bum/legs. That's a virus can stay dormant for years.

TheBirdintheCave · 07/01/2026 18:18

@HoLeeFukMe too! I was expecting a horrible time x_x I feel very sorry for anyone who had to have the pain I saw my dad go through with it :(

I'm not a doctor or a dermatologist, but I wouldn't be using steroid cream on that and would get it properly checked out as soon as you can. If it is shingles (and it might be!), the location of it is worrying - you don't want it affecting the nerves to the eye. Antivirals are best started as soon as possible. Go and see a pharmacist today and take their advice.

Yes! eye shingles victim here and just been to eye hospital appointment SIX years after getting the wretched thing! Nightmare 😕 vision so badly affected.

It’s definitely not Shingles. Maybe I need to change the thread name! 🤭
As I said previously I’ve had it too long to be shingles.

Have seen a dr today and most likely Perioral Dermatitis. As a lot of you have said! Have got a prescription for Metronidazole to try.
