If your wash machine capacity was 7 kg & you went to one with 9 kg or 11 kg...-

... did it change your life?
Moving home and need a new washing machine. Budget is £450. Two of us and the dog. Also expecting lots of visitors so frequent bed linen changes. What did you notice when you went XL? Is it just that you get a bigger door?

I recently replaced my old Hotpoint 8kg washer with a new beko 8kg washer. The new one is very, very fussy about the load and I can't get nearly as much in despite it being allegedly the same capacity.
So on that basis next time I will just get the biggest I can find.
Only two adults here.
Also I don't care if the machine's life is shortened because I only ever use the quick wash. Washers don't live forever anyway

I’ve got a 8kg machine, 2 adults
we do 2 loads of bedding a week, 3 loads of towels a week as we both have fresh every night and 2 loads of clothes each a week 🤣 he does his washing I do mine!

So which machine do you use because clearly you are the most prolific user😂 ?

The other issue with my washer, which is something to watch for in general, is that it weighs the load and apparently how dirty it is (no idea how) then reduces the cycle time. I don't want that, sometimes I use machine dye which needs to run for a certain time or I'm trying to get a stain out of something or an item is very smelly and I want it in a full wash.

I hate bloody intelligent machines.

I want a washing machine which has an average IQ then

Thank you - these are the golden nuggets I was after

Moving to a warmer part of the UK so I can’t justify a dryer.

Where are you in the UK where you think you won't need a dryer?!

We are in a warm corner of the south east and I would NOT be without mine!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 04/01/2026 22:19

I upgraded to the biggest washing machine that I could find on AO/Currys! It means that I can get a week's worth of work clothes in one wash. I can fit large dog beds, double duvet covers, etc. in it.

It just meant that I had to buy another clothes horse and several sock racks to cope with the laundry when it gets hung up and out!

RememberDecember · 04/01/2026 22:19

I like having the bigger load but make sure you have sufficient drying space - no way I can fit full load on thr hanging airer. I tend to put half in the tumble drier and sports stuff on airer.

Sorry I didn’t mean to biscuit was just place marking

I have no idea what our washing weighs… but I have a 9kg and run most things on the mixed one hour cycle. The bath/ bed one is almost 3 hours and that’s ok - as is the woollens and the delicates cycle. Which are maybe 90mins? (I then mega spin everything which is 10 mins)

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 04/01/2026 22:25

I highly recommend getting your washer insured through domestic and general. We have had multiple call-outs over the years and a few replacements. It’s only a few quid a month

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 04/01/2026 22:29

Hi,
I replaced a 15 year old 7kg AEG with a Samsung 11kg one. I like it and do less loads of washing.

It has a 15 minute wash, a 39 minute quick wash and lots of longer cycles. You can adjust the temperature and spin on washes too and the time increases for this. It has WiFi connection and you can download other programs but I've not done this.

It is very quiet although it plays a tune when it finishes or you can mute this. It also has a 1400rpm spin so washing is quite dry when it comes out machine.

Before this thread I was thinking of a Samsung as I can get a 5 yr warranty if I buy before Jan 31,
@MagnoliaTreeBlossom I’ve lived in a very wet part of Scotland and am moving to Dorset. I have never owned a tumble dryer in over 30 yrs so it’s hard to think I need one when I’ve managed without until now. Truthfully, there are other things higher up my list - like an under counter iced water supply 😉

I was up in the night and randomly watched this Reel on Insta about why you shouldn't always use the Short Cycles on any washing machine...

Hopefully that helped get you back to sleep - but I will watch. Thank you.

Yes, a bigger washing machine has made life much, much easier.
Family of 5 with no dryer but we bought a massive dryer from b a d m, which takes most of the wash in one go (hallway)

Can’t think what it is 🤣 I’m not home
I do know how much we wash each week though 🤣 as I do washing on my days off 🤣

Clefable · 04/01/2026 22:48

Quick wash cycles are almost always for half or quarter loads. They are meant for a small number of items that aren’t really dirty that you need to be washed quickly. I’ve seen on here people wonder why their laundry comes out smelling stale or their clothes don’t smell clean, then they mention they always use the quick wash cycle which is usually for no more than 4kg loads and only for lightly soiled stuff. The manual will tell you.

shazshaz · 04/01/2026 22:52

I switched to a Bosch 9kg. I wouldn't say it the increase in capacity was hugely noticeable. What was a game changer was the 1600rpm spin cycle, the fact it's so quiet and the timer function. It has various cycles ranging from 15 mins to 2.5 hours. There is a speed perfect function and an eco wash function which also alter the length of the washes.

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 04/01/2026 23:02

I've got a beko 12kg . It's brilliant. Does quick wash in about 30 mins. Steam therapy. Half load . It's really adjustable with the program options.
It's great for huge wash loads, king size coverless duvets and pet bedding.

Check size first though, to make sure it fits in your space.

EverybodyLTB · 04/01/2026 23:24

I have the 12kg Samsung and it has lots of adjustable settings. The 15 minute setting I use but I add on more spin and higher temp which brings it to about 35 mins. You can choose a setting and then put in variables. The time is always very accurate, too. It was expensive when I bought it but I think about £375-£400 now. It fits easily a king size set and I’ve just put in a king size fleecy mattress protector, still had plenty of space.

Now a dryer WILL change your life.

Mum5net · 05/01/2026 12:08

Thanks everyone. I went onto the Samsung website to download the manual as suggested, and it turns out they have a very good buy-direct deal — price matching plus a 15% off code if you qualify.
They’ve confirmed I can put my super king bedding into their 11kg machine on the 39-minute programme, as it weighs under 5kg.
So I think I’m going to go for the 11kg model, once I’ve double-checked the dimensions — as someone rightly flagged that it may stick out a bit more.

The bearings can go quicker on a larger capacity machine. We've had this problem twice in a row, so have gone back to a smaller capacity. It takes less time to hang up and dry as well.

I very rarely use a dryer. North East. I have a large utility room and a washing line. Only use a dryer if there is a backlog for some reason.

I disagree about quick wash. My washer lists the capacity for every cycle and you can use quick wash for a full load. It also has a super quick button but that's only for half load. The quick wash for a 60C full load with fast spin is an hour. The super quick wash for a couple of items on cool is 15 minutes.
The water is so hard here there's no danger of detergent build up.

I might as well add my golden rules for keeping a washer clean, fresh and mould free.
1.Use only powder, liquid detergents and capsules give slime build up and mould.
2.Put the powder in the drum, never the drawer
3.Never use fabric conditioner
4.squirt some white vinegar into the drawer for every wash. It does the same job as fabric conditioner apart from the perfume but I promise your laundry won't smell of vinegar.
Once a month run a very hot wash on an empty machine with just white vinegar.

Mum5net · 05/01/2026 17:58

What machine do you have @chisping? I think I might go for the powder, from now on once I move as I should be able to store a big box. Not a fan of fabric conditioner either.
@smallglassbottle yes, the five year warranty should help if this becomes an issue.
