Sticky residue on PVC window frames

Hi - when we first moved into our house we couldn't afford proper backout blinds. We got some temporary ones that were fixed up to the window using velco strips. The velcro stuck around the window frame.
They ended up being stuck up there for a good few years in the end.
Now we have proper blackout blinds fitted, but the velcro has left sticky residue around the window frames (four windows). It attacts dirt and grime and I'm desperate to properly remove it all.
I bought sticky stuff remover but it was a very runny liquid so it was useless for use on a vertical surface.
I'm looking for something thick and pasty that I can paint on and then wipe off with a cloth.
Does such a thing exist?

Cif is usually the go to for all things sticky. You need a fairly dry paste and a plastic scrubbing sponge.

We had a lot of sticky residue from sellotape on our pvc conservatory ceiling (from putting up Christmas decorations) and I mean a lot ! We tried absolutely everything and then we bought Goo Gone (daft name but does exactly as it says!) It removed it all and left no staining whatsoever. I highly recommend.

Thank you. Is it thick? Presumably if you used it on a ceiling?

Hmm im wondering if thats what’s on my window frames. Ive only half heartedly tried to remove it but upvc cleaner doesn’t seem to touch it.

Thanks. Ideally I want to avoid scrubbing and use something that will dissolve the sticky so it can be wiped off.

Could be, it's a right PITA. I have used various cleaners and IPA, scrubbed with a toothbrush etc. it's very stubborn. Looks horrible as it's got dust and muck stuck to it, so it's got to go.

Mine looks like brown parcel tape or something. Its quite orange.

Nottogetapenny · 04/01/2026 16:26

Hair spray/hair lacquer melts sticky that’s left behind. Spray it on, then leave for a few minutes, then rub. If it hasn’t taken it off repeat until it’s all removed.

JustBeach · 04/01/2026 16:30

I cleaned mine before Christmas with antibac hand gel, and it worked surprisingly well on all the sellotape residue!

minipie · 04/01/2026 16:30

I’ve had exactly this issue. What you need is an extension cable and a hairdryer. Heat the residue up and then it peels off pretty easily. It would be easier if you still had the Velcro there and could peel it off in one go but I reckon it should work to peel just the residue off.

Can I suggest that whatever you use, try it out first in an inconspicuous area first. Then if there are adverse results, you won’t have to look at them forever.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 04/01/2026 16:38

You use sticky stuff remover on a cloth or a piece of kitchen roll and rub over the sticky area. You don't just pour it on. How were you trying to use it? Don't use Cif or anything else abrasive as it will scratch the frames and make any dirt that gets on them in future harder to get off. Don't use anything that contains bleach either as it makes plastic go yellow.

Ebok1990 · 04/01/2026 16:44

I've got velcro adhesive stuck to my window frames. None of the above suggestions worked to remove it. Heat didn't work, scraping didn't work and chemicals didn't work. I gave up eventually and stuck more velcro over the top to disguise the yellow stained residue.

PrincessofEuphrania · 04/01/2026 16:48

It was a liquid you wipe on, wait and wash off with hot soapy water. Worked a treat. I think you can get it as a spray which would probably be better.

Wise words indeed!

That's how I used it. It didn't work. The residue is stick, thick and almost rubbery. Hard to describe but it is proving very difficult to eradicate.

We have lovely fitted blackout blinds on the windows now, but the windows look grim.

I might have found something that works. I found some silicone sealant remover at the back of a cupboard. It's like a very thick gel. I put some on a test area with a spatula (small school glue type), waited 5 mins, wiped with a cloth and it came off almost in one go. I have now done the bottom of one of the windows and it looks so good! It was a bit fiddly to apply though so still not going to be a quick job.

Was yours kind of thick and rubbery? It's not like thin sellotape residue, which I think is what other posters are imagining.

Yes, nothing like sellotape residue. It was sticky back velcro. I used it to attached insect netting at the winfows. Rue the day I ever used it. Has made a right mess and nothing I've tried has shifted it, hence why I ended up just conceding defeat and covering it up.
