How busy is your road?

If you stood staring out your front window how long would it be before a car or person walked by?

Could be hours at certain times of the day, live in a cul de sac with 18 houses.

Meadowfinch · 04/01/2026 15:01

We live on a C road between villages. One car every 5 mins on a cold Sunday like today. A few dog walkers too. Maybe one or two people walking up the hill to the common.

It's busier during school run to the next village, and on Saturdays.

BonnieWeeLass99 · 04/01/2026 15:25

Could be hours. I live in a private square jutting off a cul de sac so the only traffic outside my window is the people of the other 3 houses overlooking the square. Very quiet and very hidden and after years of living on a busy A road I love it!

Rituelec · 04/01/2026 15:25

Daytime 5/10mins

EchoedSilence · 04/01/2026 15:29

I live in a cul de sac so could be 5 minutes or could be hours.Depends on the time of day.

bumphousebump · 04/01/2026 15:30

A few dog walkers. Kids walking to and from school. We are in the middle of town but it’s a quiet road apart from 10 minutes in the morning and evening when it’s used as a rush hour cut through.

Buscobel · 04/01/2026 15:32

I live in a cul de sac too, so it depends who is having a delivery. Otherwise, only the people that live here go past, so that’s six.

user2848502016 · 04/01/2026 15:35

Depends I live in a village so on my actual street could be a while but I can also see the main A road through the village from my front windows so a few minutes before seeing a car or person along there

vanillalattes · 04/01/2026 15:39

On a weekend, it could be half an hour. On weekdays, every couple of minutes.

daffodilandtulip · 04/01/2026 15:42

When we moved here 20 years ago, hours. Now it leads to ten times the amount of houses so it can be very busy. We tend to have a 7:30-8:15 cram every morning because people think it's a shortcut, when it isn't, and it's tiny so massive road rage. Then you could go all day and not see anything and there's no night rush hour. Where do they all go 😂

Tarkan · 04/01/2026 15:44

It depends. Could be a few minutes, could be much longer. We’re a fairly quiet residential street which runs parallel to and in between two bigger roads so most vehicles go along those roads and it’s only if someone is coming into our street or the next one which comes off of ours that they’ll come along here.

You can tell when one of the bigger roads has roadworks or a diversion though as we get used a lot more then.

Pedestrian-wise we get some but I don’t really notice them unless they’re having a loud conversation, you’re more likely to have kids cycling around or occasionally playing footy or kerby on the street.

Onelittledog · 04/01/2026 15:45

Never, we live in a tiny hamlet with only a footpath in front of our house. No parking near our house, I can see the single track road if I go into our front garden and even very few vehicles. Very rural northern England

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/01/2026 15:54

I live in a cul de sac of 21 houses next to a school. It's busy at school drop off and collecting times or on open evenings.
Apart from that it's generally quiet as most of my neighbours are either retired or working from home. The most vehicles are generally supermarket deliveries or Evri/Amazon etc. Most households with children let them play in the street.

Oldraver · 04/01/2026 16:15

Live at the end of a cul-de-sac amongst 7 houses. There always seems to be someone on the go

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 04/01/2026 16:17

Less than a minute. I like it! We used to live on a cul de sac and I grew up in the middle of nowhere and I actually prefer it busier. We live opposite woodland though so best of both worlds and lots of the footfall is people going for a walk. Also have a bus route right outside though (well couple of doors down), very convenient.

FruitWordSalad · 04/01/2026 16:22

Not in a cul de sac. Weekdays: a handful of cars in the morning / lunchtime / evenings. Plus a few tractors. Weekend maybe 10-15 cars max each day.

In summer, maybe a few bikes, less cars then the rest of the year, but more tractors. I love the lack of background drone, we can go hours in silence.

Foxleypony · 04/01/2026 16:24

Ten minutes max, often much less. It's busier than most streets I've lived on and I don't like it, especially as our house has no front garden so people peer into our hall while we're coming or going. We keep our shutters closed all day. Still, I like that it's an interesting place to live with restaurants, bars, hotel and theatre on the same road, and not some quiet suburban backwater.

Kittylicker · 04/01/2026 17:00

It’s a drop off & pickup zone for School on weekdays otherwise very quiet.

crazeekat · 04/01/2026 17:03

5 mins car 15-15 min person, usually walking dog.

Oldandgreyer · 04/01/2026 17:06

Depends.

By about 9.30 most people are asleep at our end. No lights on.
There's a handful of taxi drivers who always seem to be pottering about.
There's a young adult who sits in his car on his driveway until after midnight.

DiscoBeat · 04/01/2026 17:08

From our window just delivery drivers

HurdyGurdy19 · 04/01/2026 17:10

Also live in a cul-de-sac (22 houses), so it varies. Today, probably 30 minutes between cars/Amazon etc/ supermarket deliveries.

But we're opposite a school, so pick up and drop off times are pandemonium.

thesnowfellfastandthewindblewwild · 04/01/2026 17:10

Ours is a long, narrow, winding country lane with no pavements or street lamps and cars go very fast. It isn’t exactly busy but cars go very fast: there have been fatalities on it.

I am often told ‘just to go for a walk’ with my preschool children. Er no.

Octaviathethird · 04/01/2026 17:13

Only delivery people and the postman so it varies, could be days if no deliveries are due! There are only 6 houses on our road, which is a dead end, our house is the second from last and the last house's driveway is accessed from another road so it's very quiet.

ShodAndShadySenators · 04/01/2026 17:16

Ours is busy in fits and starts, because of the traffic lights at the very distant end. Very quiet after ten pm though, and quiet before 7.30 am.

Pedestrians are quite plentiful, loads of people walking into the village for their newspapers, dog walking or going to school. I see the same folks quite regularly going past and I do really like it (especially when the schools walk down to the local churches for the special services and you can hear the excited chatter of the kids - mine was once one of them...) If I'm out in the front garden I can be chatting with other people every few minutes, it's quite sociable!
