Any Berlin/German mumsnetters around?

I have a slightly complicated family situation to deal with.
I will need to speak to the Consulate here in the UK on Monday for proper advice but thought some guidance here might help me ask the right questions of them.

My father died before Christmas and I only found out two days ago when a mutual acquaintance realised I did not know.

I can only assume my father has not listed me as his next of kin, as his death occurred in hospital.
No one single person seems to be dealing with things in Berlin, I have been told he had a social worker but no-one knows their name. I don’t know if social workers take a Christmas break? Maybe this person should have my details but is on leave?
I have so many questions and although I am now in touch with a couple of his friends in Berlin, only one speaks good English so it’s a three way conversation every time.

He was a UK National but recently gained German citizenship.

I feel so lost, and am trying to grieve with so much unknown bureaucracy ahead of me.

First off, I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm in Berlin.

I don't know about social workers, but Christmas/New Year holidays are just ending, and normal work resumes tomorrow, so hopefully that will help.

Did he drop his UK citizenship? I used to know someone who worked at the UK consulate here in Berlin (she has since left), and this is one of the sorts of things she would help deal with.

Do you know which hospital? Surely they should be contactable?

What kind of questions would you like to have answered? How long did you father have the social worker for? It is usually not their place to inform relatives of adults. Anyway, you should get in touch with the authorities anyway. In Berlin you will inherit something from your dad (if there is anything) whether he put you in his will or not.

@ohdrearydrearyme yes he dropped his UK citizenship. He had lived in Germany since the 80s and only took German citizenship as a result of Brexit.
I don’t know which hospital. I know one person has access to his apartment but they don’t know anything! He was a very odd person who didn’t like authority and engaged with it as little as possible.

@BerlinHelp i am aware that as his only child I automatically inherit everything, including any debt! As far as I am aware because I am a UK citizen I have six months to claim or renounce it.

I have no idea about his social worker, I didn’t know he had one until yesterday when one of his friends mentioned it. But they do not know who it is or how to contact them.
I have seen a video of his flat and it is very disorganised. He did not leave paperwork etc.

I think I will just have to wait to speak to the Consulate here tomorrow and let them help me.

Well, you will only inherit everything if he did not leave a will. Otherwise you will get the "Pflichtteil". But yes, speak to the embassy as soon as possible.
