Is this food poisoning or a sickness bug?

Last night around 8.30pm I ate a chicken curry ready meal. I had definitely cooked it enough and it was within date. I wokeup at 2am and had really bad diarrhoea and nausea for about an hour and a half. Fell asleep and woke again at half six feeling ropey. Just now have vomited three times, (TMI sorry why looks like all of last nights dinner). Instantly felt some relief after vomiting.

I am meant to be going into the office tomorrow - I’m aware I probably can’t as have to give it 48 hours. Would you say tummy bug or food poisoning? And how long is it likely to last?

There's no way of knowing on both counts. Hope you feel better soon.

I don't really understand what the difference is between tummy bug & food poisoning. Aren't they the same thing?
I would stay off tomorrow if you are still feeling ropey.

Tummy bug is any infectious bug that you have caught that causes d&v, regardless of what you have eaten, and can be passed on to other people. Food poisoning is something wrong and toxic with a particular food you have eaten. Not infectious, cannot be passed on, and if you hadn't eaten the food you'd have been fine.
So the 48 hours is in the case of bug to protect others. Food poisoning no requirement to avoid other people.

Food poisoning can be infectious and therefore should be treated the same as a big.

The germs that cause food poisoning can be spread via poor hygiene and therefore can potentially be contagious

Wonderknicks · 04/01/2026 17:42

That's why I don't understand the difference. If I eat something that gives me food poisoning & don't wash my hands properly of course someone else could catch it - it's how it got into the food in the first place, generally.

Yes, a quick Google will explain it better than I can but it can be.

Treat as if norovirus and wait til you’re 48 hours clear of symptoms.

As others have said food poisoning can be contagious in some cases.

TwistedWonder · 04/01/2026 19:44

I recently went out to dinner and woke up at 2am with the worst diarrhoea and vomiting I’ve ever had in my life.

I was convinced it was food poisoning until 24 hours later my parents and my son (who wasn’t out with us) all had the same thing.

Called doctors who said there’s a lot of norovirus going the rounds so that’s most likely cause.

In your shoes I would tell work as they’re very unlikely to want to anywhere near the office as if it’s norovirus it spreads like wildfire

food poisoning can be infectious? Are you sure?

Yes - some types are, e.g. salmonella and campylobacter, where the illness is directly caused by the bacteria - it can be transmitted just like any other bacterial or viral infection.

Other types are caused by a toxin in food, e.g. food poisoning from improperly stored rice, where the illness is caused by a toxin produced by the bacteria (this is why heating the food to kill off any bacteria doesn't prevent illness). In this case it's not infectious - you have to actually eat the food containing the toxin to be ill.
