My house has a 70s vibe and I would love curtains like those on the Good Life. Any recommendations of where to get them? Thanks!

EBay

I can’t remember what the curtains on The Good Life looked like, but M&S has some velvet curtains in the sale. You probably want the pencil pleat ones rather than the ones with metal eyelets at the top,

The trouble is they are all made from polyester now, the 70s ones would have been cotton velvet which hung much better. I had some made to measure in the 80s, wish I had them now too as none in the shops look as good.

I’d find somewhere in your area which does made to measure, I’d be surprised if they didn’t have velvets.

Ive got russet velvet pencil pleat ones from marks and spencer. I needed super long lengtg, but luckily, the longest ones fit. Very very expensive for bespoke ones.

We have beautiful velvet curtains that we had made to measure. Oh my word the cost. Let’s say they need to remain fashionable for 50 more years!

Ebay or Vinted

I had some beautiful cotton velvet ones in navy blue but I moved house and so didn't need such huge ones anymore so I gave them to my old neighbour who had always loved them. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't see till have them up because curtains never really wear out.

This seller has amazing curtains

DearestItIsSnowing · 04/01/2026 00:33

In that case John Lewis will have them.

I have velvet curtains but I could only afford them because I bought the fabric from here and had them made up. I can make curtains, but wouldn’t attempt such heavy ones - mine are on patio doors.

Imagine having curtains made from this. (not mine) They will have more velvet in stock, including lots of plain fabric, you just need to ring them and ask. They are very helpful. The fabric is seconds and in pieces up to 3m long, but if you give them your window measurements they will send what you need.

Here it is at full price.

We have these in our DCs’ bedroom. My son chose them over cotton or linen as he liked how soft they were (he was 4!). They hang beautifully.

Edited

These are polyester velvet and easy to find. Cotton velvet is around £35 a metre plus sewing cost.

Cotton velvet is gorgeous but does fade from sunlight. Good lining and weighting would improve the drape/hang of polyester velvet.

Nikkynakkynoo · 04/01/2026 10:46

Definitely eBay for vintage cotton velvet - though be prepared to get them altered to fit.

Yes - I’d avoid them on south facing windows and/or deep colours.
