De-icing a car windscreen using hot water in a bag method

Hosoan · 03/01/2026 13:44

Has anyone used this method to de-ice a car windscreen, where you use a plastic bag of hot or warm water and move it over the windscreen to melt the ice?
If so has anyone experienced cracking of the windscreen? I know it's a risk but am not sure how much of a risk.
I am aware not to just pour water over as it can freeze on the ground making it slippery, but using a bag avoids that.
Any experiences please

I just place a towel on the windscreen of overnight & whip it off in the morning. Works perfectly. Fancier versions exist

I live at the top of a very windy hill. I used to do this, but lost SO many towels. Even a windscreen cover isn't guaranteed not to blow up and leave the screen bare! Even with the wipers down over the top, it STILL manages to leave that vital part of the screen to freeze.

I use a hot water bottle and fill it up at the same time I'm making my coffee. When I've finished de-icing the car, you can pop it on your lap until the heating kicks in.
The nylon windscreen things work well too, but the issue I had was that I didn't always have somewhere to dry it off during the day and keeping it in the car just added to the condensation issues.

You are an absolute genius!!!!!! Why have I never thought of this!!
My car takes ages to heat up so im always driving along chittering for the first 20 minutes. Love this idea!!!

In some countries it gets so cold, the oil in the engine and gearbox freezes. What then ?...........Just saying !

Please don’t leave your engine running while
you de-ice. An idling car can produce twice the amount of harmful omissions as a driving car. It’s also now a fine-able offence - the law changed around this relatively recently.

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/winter-driving/dont-get-fined-for-de-icing-your-car/

I can sit on my drive for as long as I need with my engine running to de ice my car, that’s not illegal

NearlyJanMustBeTimeToDiet · 03/01/2026 19:20

I've always just used warm tap water poured over. Occasionally de ice spray if its frosted whilst I'm out and about. Always keep one in boot of car.

EleanorReally · 03/01/2026 19:21

but the thought of the icy puddle left by the water over the windscreen is a bit sobering.

It barely leaves a puddle. And it's on my drive where no one really walks

That's fair enough, I was unfortunate that there was enough run-off onto the pavement for me to slip on and injure myself.

Windscreen cover for a fiver from lidl. No scraping, deicing or faffing

This!!
Just why would you scrape?

It’s not just the hot water, it’s pouring it on frozen glass that causes the crack. A hot country wouldn’t have that problem.

Fair point.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 03/01/2026 19:33

Haven’t tried it myself. I have tried using a bank card and when that didn’t work I threw some of my tea from my flask at the window. The wipers were on and they splashed tea all over me as I turned around to see my husband standing there with his gob wide open.

Pollqueen · 03/01/2026 19:36

I use a big jug of barely tepid water, always worked for me

BooksandCats123 · 03/01/2026 19:39

My son does this every morning, my husband has one of those foil covers that shuts into the front doors of the car that make things much easier.

Natsku · 03/01/2026 19:40

I live in Finland. Nobody, absolutely nobody, is using a bag of warm water to clear the ice off their windscreen. You switch your car on, turn the heat up full blast aimed at the windscreen, then scrape everything off. Takes like 2 minutes max if its particularly badly frozen, usually less than a minute.

Or they plug their cars in half an hour before going somewhere, with a fan heater inside the car so they get into a toasty warm car and just need a quick brush of the windscreen to get all the melted snow and ice off, but I don't think cars in the UK have the special sockets for plugging in, and not even all cars here (mine doesn't, which is annoying)

She doesn't want too , obviously

Jesus
snarky much?!

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 03/01/2026 19:59

Electric car - put it on preheat via the app when I start putting on the coat and shoes.

Sorted!

Don't they get stolen ?

Mine has little flaps that you tuck inside the car door. I hardly ever remember to use it but when I do all I have to do is lift it off and drive away.

I had a horrible accident a couple of winters ago slipping over on the ice caused by someone de-icing their windscreen by pouring water over it, it had run off their drive onto the pavement and frozen over. Broke my coxyx. I wish people were more aware of the consequences! Warm water in a bag seems like a much safer solution (or de-icer and a scraper).

Or, people should be more careful walking when it’s icy. Icy patches appear for a multitude of reasons.

Eightdayz · 03/01/2026 20:07

The crack is caused by temperature change in the glass. Not the water contacting it. Its just as risky if the water is in a bag.

Play stupid games you win stupid prizes.

Get a scraper thats got a glove on it to keep your handy wandys all snug. Or my preferred option is to leave 10 minutes early and let my heater do all the hard work for me.

You can't see ice in the dark. Our streetlights are turned down after dark and off at 11pm.

TessSaysYes · 03/01/2026 20:12

Well be sure to film yourself, put it on Tik Tok, so we can all have a good laugh 🤣

The absolute arrogance - you need to clear your windscreen, irrespective of additional, avoidable risk to others. SMH.

EleanorReally · 03/01/2026 20:14

my car doesnt get warm until i have been driving for at least 5 minutes

Big jug of hot water from the tap (so not boiling) has done the job perfectly for me for the last 25 years, and nary a cracked windscreen in sight. Couldn't be faffing around trying to get it into a bag and roasting my hands in the process 😂

Me too 🤷‍♀️
