How do I listen to music on a plane?!

NetflixWithoutFriendsIsWrong · 03/01/2026 07:17

Explain this to an old dinosaur will you?! At home I just flick on YouTube and type in whatever song I want to listen to! I only have the radio in the car.

I don't know anything about downloading or Spotify etc etc. It's a 9 hour flight, I don’t really want to rely on in-flight entertainment. Just want to kick back and close my eyes with a couple of MJ and Bowie albums at my own choice.

HOW? 🙈 I only have a basic smart phone and some ear pods that connect via blue tooth. I could just about set that up!

Bring back the Walkman. I don't belong here. I'm only 41!

I think it's advisable to download with WiFi as otherwise it chews into data but once saved in your phone it's there at your leisure 😌

But how do I download it to my phone? That’s what I don’t understand. I know how to download podcasts but not films and tv shows. For example how to download from Netflix for watching without WiFi?

So on Netflix, when you click on a show or a film there is often an option to download. It's on the right hand side next to the rate/share buttons. I'll upload a picture but it takes a little while to get approved so won't appear for a few minutes.

Do you have the Netflix app on your phone? I presume that's all you'd need.

I also have a list (in my head) of my favourite films most of which are 80s or 90s. So when I think of one I google it to find out if it's currently available on Netflix, Disney etc (ie all the things that are available to me). If not, I look them up on the Google TV app under "shop" then either rent or buy it. I now presume I can watch these saved films on my long haul flight too. I don't normally fly long haul hence the initial question. I hope this helps you, just as the kind ones on here have helped me 😃

You download when you’re connected to the internet and can then play it whenever you want.

It's only basic if you use it. I have no interest in downloading music, films or podcasts, I prefer to read or listen to the radio. Doesn't mean I couldn't learn - which is why this thread is so helpful.

The instructions are right there on the screen though - you may not have used it before but it’s very very simple to figure out.

No they aren't - if I go onto BBC Sounds, for example, it doesn't tell me anything right there on the screen about how to download the podcast so I can listen foc on a plane. That's why these type of q&a's are very helpful.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/01/2026 09:23

Downloading Netflix on a phone or tablet is extremely easy.

  1. Find the show/film you want, and click the download button either at the right of the episode or top of page for a film.
  2. The icons will change whilst they download. The top icon pictured is a completed download
  3. When youre on the plane, click the bottom right icon to bring up your downloads
  4. Watch them!

(I have attached images but they may take a little time to be approved)

Same way of doing it goes for Disney +. An arrow pointing down with a line underneath is pretty much the universal download symbol

But if you're technologically literate, then you'll very easily be able to find the universal download symbol.

I downloaded Spotify, and ensured I could listen to music offline. It didn't work

Did you pay for Spotify premium? I

If it was downloaded, then there is no reason that it wouldn't have worked so you will have made a mistake somewhere. Maybe someone can help you here, if you explain what you did.

You get free music with Amazon Prime.

If you’re already signed up to prime membership.

...but sadly a response worded that way will stop some people asking questions...

Implying that if someone doesn't know a "universal symbol" then they are technically illiterate is not going to encourage people to stick their heads above the parapet ..

There's a reasonably prominent download button on every episode.

Exactly 🫣

I totally appreciate lots of people have never used Spotify or whatever but a quick google search tells you exactly how to use it with step-by-step instructions.

You have to pay for Spotify premium and download all your music while you have an internet connection.

I was not responding to a question though. Simply explaining why it's important to remain relatively up to date with technology.

Yeah I get that, and I agree to some extent, but ...but sometimes (to roughly paraphrase somebody), it's not a case of someone not knowing something being "technically iliterate" it's probably more a case of them not having been exposed to a particular function before....or to put it another way : everyday can be a school day...

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 03/01/2026 10:16

SirChenjins · 03/01/2026 08:39

No it wouldn't. It's perfectly possible to feel a dinosaaur with one aspect of tech at a certain age but use it happily it other areas. I rarely listen to music other than the radio in the car, so this tgread has been very helpful - thanks to the OP for starting it.

Edited

Exactly. I'm also 41. I consider myself pretty tech savvy - in fact I have been working in AI and digital tech for the past 2 years. I never listen to music beyond, what the OP described, occasionally listening to stuff via WiFi on YouTube at home. DD recently got a phone and wanted to listen to music out and about and I found it a bit baffling as the ways to do this had changed so much since I last did it- so many different streaming options, can only download on premium services etc. I found out how to sort it via googling/ research. But I did feel a bit of a dinosaur in this area until I had filled my knowledge gap. Asking a question on Mumsnet is a totally valid way of filling that knowledge gap.

Technology means many different things. I use specific tech in my job - I just don't download or stream music or TV/films. That doesn't mean I don't keep up to date with tech.

SirChenjins · 03/01/2026 12:03

Well no, if you don't understand the concept of downloading meaning that makes it available offline I suppose that's true. But does everything require a dictionary definition to be provided?

I don't consider myself in anyway technically proficient and am the absolute opposite of a early adopter but it doesn't take much to comprehend that download means put it on this device and where it says downloads is where stuff I have downloaded appears.

But anybody, who is reasonably up to date with tech, will be able to navigate a new app because the skills are transferable. These apps are made to be as user friendly as possible.

Yes - but there are specific things that 'download' doesn't cover or answer, which is why this thread has been very helpful.

Some of the responses, less so.
