Are tablecloths in style?

Just got a new dining table, and in the process of decorating the dining room. DH is really keen that we use a tablecloth to keep the new table clean (our previous table was 3rd hand and already had a lot of marks on it). Are tablecloths in style or just totally naff? What are the latest ahem trends in tablecloths?

For our dining table we have a thickish table protector on it which is covered with a white tablecloth. Kitchen table doesn't get the same treatment !

I'd never considered if they were in fashion or not - we have a toddler and so they are a must! Plus I have dressy ones for friends over/Sunday lunch and a special Christmas one. And I'm only 44 🤣

Always been in fashion as far as I'm concerned! I have a Christmas one on the table at the moment, and I have vintage embroidered ones which I often use.

A table topper is good protection if you’re using it every day. An old woolen blanket cut to size, with an extra drawstring/elastic if you’re fancy. Always supposing you have a sewing machine.

Then the tablecloth, oilcloth most of the time for cooking and crafting, cut down IKEA (buy a 12 place and cut off the excess to make napkins!) or home-made for eating.

I take great pride in knowing I can whip up a tablecloth in half an hour of straight machine sewing. Just add 20cm all around (so + 40 for length and width) and search “mitred corners” on YouTube. Find a sheet on offer in a print that matches your decor and the job’s a good’un.

I like them for special occasions but wouldn’t bother with one everyday.

Zara home usually has nice ones.

Thanks for this. It isn’t a place I had thought about!

Will the table be used for meals only? Or also kids crafting etc? Is it heat proof?
If not I would get the kind of tablecloth that insulates and is wipable for daily use so you don't have to stress about it and take it off for special occasions!

Meals, crafting, board games, Lego. Homework; working from home.

im not crafty at all, and don’t own a sewing machine (or have the faintest idea how to use one)! So it will have to be something that I buy

Like most others I only use them to protect the table when in use with guests or kids. Other than that I just leave it bare.

Tip: I found acrylic coated tablecloths to be closest fabric to a real tablecloth, unlike those plasticky oilcloths, while being wipe clean and stain resistant (time will tell). Got mine from simplytablecloths.co.uk seem to be good quality.

We have a big oak table and we have never used a table cloth. I just don’t like the look of them. Sometime I put a runner on it at Christmas, but that’s all.
