Parents of DC who overeat/are overweight - support and company

I’ve been on a couple of threads in the past with people who are worried about their DCs’ weight, as DCs are over-eaters.

We’ve begun to tackle this in earnest with our 9 year old and I wondered if anyone in the same boat would like mutual support/company?

DD is lovely, funny, creative and INCREDIBLY strong willed. Suspected ADHD/ASD. Is hungry or claims to be hungry All. The. Time. Will stand up from dinner and demand snacks. Raids the cupboard and has bread and ketchup.

We’re going for very regularly timed meals and snacks, with nothing in between, to try to get her back in touch with feelings of fullness and hunger. Also cutting right down on sugar and white carbs to try to get her off the insulin rollercoaster!

Trying to also plan for more satiating snacks and foods generally.

and trying to get her moving more…

Anyone want to join in? Will try to find people from the other threads and tag them.

Why not throw out as much of the Christmas crap as possible? It is a waste if it gets binned, but it is also a waste if it gets eaten. Worse than a waste really if it gets eaten.

Not things that are specific to an individual person, but all the general junk in the cupboard and fridge. Tonight, once the kids are in bed just do it. It will raise questions in the morning, but soon be forgotten if it just isn’t there to be found.

(I do this for myself with wine too. If there is some left the next day and I find myself thinking, ‘ I wasn’t going to have wine tonight, but it needs drinking otherwise it will go off’ then I have started trying to grab that moment and just pour it down the sink. It ends up in the sewer in the end either way, it doesn’t need to pass through my liver first. I enjoyed it the first night, that was the ‘value’ of the bottle.)

It doesn’t help when family/friends kill them with kindness with excessive amounts of chocolate and sweets. They look at me blankly when I say that we have more than enough already.

Ive also noticed how big family sized chocolate bars seem the norm these days instead of single chocolate bars which were still a treat when I was a kid. No matter what we control at home and how hard we educate our kids then the shops/friend influence makes it unavoidable.

My ASD son is overweight mainly due to his self restriction on what foods he can eat. I’ve made changes such as a more substantial snack after school, and then making that snack his lunch during holidays. He is much more willing to try new foods whilst at school and has recently tried all sorts of fruits and vegetables which I’m thrilled about! It’s so hard when additional needs are present.

Our bodies are not dustbins

Well quite, so why fill them with rubbish? Just chuck it away and bypass the body.

Which is why I am suggesting throwing the crap into the dustbin rather than eating it. I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say.

I meant to agree with you!

There is a strong connection with autism, in dopamine seeking via food. It can really reach an addiction stage of self soothing/finding comfort in eating, it’s not physical hunger but easily mistaken as such.

It’s a very fine balancing act to handle. I think you are on the right track with reducing the simple carb type of snacks, as they are the crack cocaine of dopamine easy hits for a lot of people.

We didn’t have any! We only buy enough ‘extras’ for a few days. The kids didn’t get much chocolate this year (just a Lindt reindeer each!) so it was all gone before New Year.
