How do I even start to get my shit together?

Been ill all week with the flu. Today is the first day I’ve woken up feeling like I vaguely resemble a human being (as in I’m not entirely exhausted, I have a small amount of energy), . My bedroom is a tip. My body is disgusting, my hair is so greasy. I’ve not got any good food in the house, I’ve not eaten a proper meal all week. I’ve got so much washing to do but I can’t bring myself to go back upstairs to get it all. I feel so overwhelmed even looking at it all

Ah OP, my advice is to

  1. wash yourself - 10 minutes Rest for 30 minutes
  2. put on a wash
  3. could a friend pick up some groceries Then write a list and do things in 15minute bursts and rest in between
Hagnumber4 · 02/01/2026 10:31

Bung some laundry in the wash, Sit in the bath and book a food shop to be delivered tomorrow. Two birds, one stone. Take it easy, OP

I’m hoping I’ll work up some energy to have a shower and sort my hair out, because it is honestly vile at the moment

Can you get to a launderette? Stick everything in a big machine, go to a cafe and get a decent meal whilst it’s washing. Then go back to tumble dry. That way all your washing is done in one go.

ProfessorRizz · 02/01/2026 10:36

Do you have Chop Chop (Sainsburys) or similar? You can get some groceries in an hour.

Have a bath not a shower, takes less energy.

itsthetea · 02/01/2026 10:40

Take it really easy still / you will recover energy quickly if you don’t go mad now. So try to ignore what you can

wash yourself

are you sure you haven’t got a fish finger or tin of baked beans lurking ? Tins of veg make a curry easily

online shop?

can you retreat to another bed until you have the energy to clear up ?

take it easy and drink lots of tea

locket2009 · 02/01/2026 10:41

I think I would focus on having a shower and washing my hair first as it always makes me feel better. Stick a wash on after and then rest and order a food delivery whilst you rest.

even if that’s all you manage it’s still a few things ticked off. Also write a list of what needs doing whilst sat and cross off what you’ve done even the small things. Seeing some progress this way will help you feel less over whelmed. I hope you feel better soon

Laundrettes are pretty thin on the ground these days.

If you can do only one thing then wash your hair, even if it's over the sink or bath. I guarantee you'll feel much better just by doing that one thing.

Then you might have to rest for a few hours, but you'll feel more human.

Nincompoo · 02/01/2026 10:43

Have a shower, double shampoo your hair, put on some clean clothes and go and get something healthyish that is easy to cook, soup, beans on toast, omelet with veg etc. then tidy the room your going to use and enjoy the feeling of having achieved something.

Tomorrow tackle some proper shopping and tidy another room.

TheCurious0range · 02/01/2026 10:45

Stick some laundry in, go and get in the shower, then have a rest while you dry off and work out what to do about food, a whoosh or similar will do you for a few days. Tidy up while you wait for it to arrive. Then plan very little for the rest of the day. You could be done by 1!

JetFlight · 02/01/2026 10:50

Have a shower but keep it on the coolish side. Sort out hair. Use conditioner. Hot shower is very soothing but too relaxing.
put laundry on
do a bit of a tidy up 15 mins only. Set a timer.
sit down with tea and make a shopping list.
Go out and buy shopping.
sort out the washed laundry.
That's enough for today so relax after that.
Carry on with laundry and cleaning tomorrow.

sundriftwanderer · 02/01/2026 10:53

I’m still feeling somewhat unwell so I’m reluctant to go out just yet, which is why I’ve got no food in!

OP posts:
itsthetea · 02/01/2026 10:53

don’t feel bad if you can’t do all that jetflighy suggests

our doctors have been suggesting 5 to 7 days convalescence to people - rest up

itsthetea · 02/01/2026 10:54

What food have you got in the freezer /tin/ store ?

can you get any kind of delivery eg from a friend / I have done that for someone who asked even though she’s not close

Twiglets1 · 02/01/2026 10:56

I would have to have a shower and wash my hair to start feeling better.

Then investigate the food situation. Either eat what you have available or order a Deliveroo.

This afternoon, put a wash on. Don't worry about your bedroom for now.

I might have a look and see if I’ve got some fish fingers in the freezer. I know I have some potato waffles and that does sound quite appetising right now!

I think just start with a shower and hair wash, tackle the house over the next week no point getting burnt out. Put a food delivery order in, hopefully you can get a slot soon, then maybe order a takeaway for today unless you can get yourself to the shops.

aintnothinbutagstring · 02/01/2026 11:57

I often order small shops from Co-op via deliveroo when I cant face going out. If I was you, I'd dose up on painkillers and a big mug of tea/coffee before attempting anything though Im sure washing hair will give you a big boost. Take baby steps - and factor in lots of sitting down between any jobs!

Startthecar · 02/01/2026 12:35

Baby steps OP.
Treat yourself with kindness, your mind thinks you're feeling better, but your body might not agree completely yet.

If you're anything like me taking a shower and washing and drying your hair will wipe you right out!

But I think most people the focus on what makes them feel and look better, just make sure that you're able to lie down comfy afterwards don't push yourself to do anything else.

Unless you have nothing to wear, laundry will wait.
Hopefully you'll find something appealing in the freezer, until you feel strong enough to venture out and pick up a few things.

Take it easy OP, these viruses can take an a lot out of us, and it's very discouraging to relapse and feel bad again.

sundriftwanderer · 02/01/2026 12:44

As an update: I’m still on the sofa 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ today just won’t be the day for it I think

OP posts:
itsthetea · 02/01/2026 12:45

Hey you have moved from bed to sofa - that’s a great achievement!
