Help me give up my expensive coffee shop habit

banking app showed me that I spent a shocking £900 on take away coffees last year, a habit that I want to vastly reduce.
Any recommendations for coffee flasks I can make a really coffee in at home to take out? I think there are some fancy options but I’m not sure where to start!

worth thinking about it just as a habit. Work out what the coffee buying is linked with and stop doing that. If you always buy a coffee on your way say to work, you might find that walking a different route, even just in the other side of the road is enough for your brain to notice the difference so that you can not order it automatically

You might be surprised by just how quickly your brains synapses rewire themselves and you have a new habit. Make it a better one then a great reason to not buy coffee is to not disrupt the new, better habit. All the best.

is it the coffee? I know it is but bear with me.

Many things we spend money on are meeting on underlying need. We address the surface need (coffee) with a solution (flask). But the actual need is deeper and remains unmet so we go back to it. Possible reasons; status, a break, a treat, social time, stress management.

Think about when you go and what thoughts precede it.

This. I thought I had a coffee addiction, spent similar to you a year but it turns out it was more of the act of getting coffee daily (or several times a day when on the road). It was like a stress relief thing, I can’t explain it!

Cafetière, coffee of choice and I have a steel thermos cup.

Become a coffee snob. Aeropress, hand grind your beans, subscription to lovely whole beans, great mug. Easily less than £300 a year, go on a holiday with the £600 saved.

I found a really lovely ground coffee at the supermarket, and took some plus a cafetiere into work, and keep more at home.

I have a thermal cup (a free branded one). Haven't bought a coffee since.

Then make a rule you'll only buy one if you can guarantee it will be better than yours. You'll stop liking shop ones. I make it a rule not to eat shop bought cakes, biscuits, mince pies etc which cuts down a wee bit on the sweet stuff. I have decided shop bought stuff is not worth the calories, so only enjoy proper cafe stuff or home made. You could make a mental rule that only when it's an actual nice occasion do you buy one and limit to once or twice a month.

A coffee machine & a thermal cup, or there is a mini USB operated coffee machine that can take either ground coffee or Nespresso pods for coffee on the go. My ds loved walking to school with a coffee like an adult, I bought the paper cups with lids & made him one every morning with my tassimo.

I have reduced my takeaway cappuccino by always sitting in. Otherwise I have V drip? And milk frother. Buy coffee from local roasters.
My takeaway cup is the reusable Starbucks one🫣.
Talking about Starbucks I do like the frothy filter coffee they sell. Free refill and cheap.

Bean to cup coffee machine and a ninja bottle

Busybeingtired · 02/01/2026 20:45

Thank you for all the responses. I’m glad I posted as, some of you are correct that it isn’t really the coffee as I have a frothing machine and use a moka pot at home which makes great coffee. It more the habit I have got into of getting a coffee on the way to work (self employed so not same coffee shop or regular place) and I’m not sure why I feel the need to buy a coffee when I could make it at home and take it with me.
I do need a really good thermos type mug though as I don’t have anything at the moment so will explore some of the recommendations here

This is spot on for me.

I have a low income and, on the face of it, it seems stupid to be spending on a cup of coffee most days I go out. However, I have been through so much stress over the last couple of years, and having a coffee in a nice cafe is really my moment of calm and something nice for me. I need to be outside surrounded by different people and, as a single mother to a little one, it is really hard to get the same sense of peace drinking a coffee at home with a neverending to do list and toys strewn about. It also reminds me of the life I once had before the stress. It's an expense that is worth it.

I recently found their, Bello Coffee, available from their prelaunch event now. Pre launch

Contigo thermal mugs are excellent. I’ve had mine for years, it looks like new, keeps coffee hot and absolutely doesn’t leak. We all have one now for coffee/hot chocolate when we’re out and about. The best £80 I’ve ever spent because it’s saves what would now be £20+ a visit to Costa for a much less nice drink.
