Depends on the size and weight of the teen and how likely they are to grow looking at genetics.

We are a tall family and none of mine would be happy . Would it fit an adequate mattress for an adult ?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 31/12/2025 11:22

It looks like it's a thin mattress designed for a child that doesn't weigh much? I'd check the size and depth of it as if your teen isn't adult sized yet, they soon will be, and it won't be comfortable. Either way I'd also ask them. You can buy v good quality beds second hand for very little, with room for storage underneath so you might be better doing that, and putting your money into a decent mattress in the sales.

bloodredfeaturewall · 31/12/2025 11:23

it's a standard or european single, so size is ok.
my teens went into more classic styles that age but this one is plain enough. and the extra storage is a bonus if you have little space.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 31/12/2025 11:24

Honestly no.
It looks childish and not that comfy

bloodredfeaturewall · 31/12/2025 11:25

ikea ha many matress options.

@HibbityHobbityWho take your teen with you to try matresses. and eat sweedish meatballs
also to pick out bedding/accessories.

HibbityHobbityWho · 31/12/2025 11:25

We have a mattress and slatted base, (standard adult size 90x200) just the bed frame needs replacing.

My 14 year old has one similar. It was his first big bed and we have recently decorated but he decided to keep it. He has a LOT of stuff though so that played a part as he wanted extra display and storage. His brother has an ottoman style bed

thatsmyhouse · 31/12/2025 11:26

My teens both wanted double beds when their furniture was updated in their early/mid teens. I'd do that if space allows as then it won't need replacing again.

mackerella · 31/12/2025 11:28

My teen DS (15) actually has this bed, and has had it since he was about 11! The size and weight limits are fine - it's a full-size bed and can take up to 100kg so unless your teen is huge, that shouldn't be a problem. He has a normal, sprung mattress on it, and there are slats below, so it's as comfortable as any other bed. And he really values the storage drawers for clothes and hobby bits!

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/12/2025 11:29

Why not ask your teen?
Most single beds are adequate for adults (unless they are extremely tall)

TheTreeIsDown · 31/12/2025 11:31

The dimensions are on the photos on the Ikea website and gives an idea of height. Teen wise my sons are just shy of 6ft so we have no baseboards in case they want to hang their feet off the end of the bed.

Ikea do a range of storage beds, like Hemnes, Brimnes and Malm plus others. Just search beds with storage in the Ikea search bar.

Unless it is a surprise I would take the teen with you, make a day of it, eat in the restaurant. Be aware some of them open at least 30 minutes early for browsing and the restaurant is open too meaning you can get a hearty breakfast and then go check out the beds. You can browse the store until the kitchen items section (pans, crockery etc) that part is usually roped off until the actual opening time.

I just live near an Ikea.

Daisypod · 31/12/2025 11:31

My 18 year old has this bed, she likes it as it has loads of storage and is a solid single bed. We put a decent mattress on it. No room in her room for a double bed

HibbityHobbityWho · 31/12/2025 11:31

@mackerella do you think you could tell me the height from where the slotted base rests to the top of the baseboard (she want so know if her mattress will come above it or not)? DD is quite short and about 45 kg so not worried about size.

FlutteryButterfly · 31/12/2025 11:32

I would go for a more chassis design. Are you limited to space, storage and price? When my DC turned 11/12 we got them ikea doubles one with drawers storage under and the other an ottoman style bed. The bigger the bed the better if you can.

The double bed "need" for tall teenagers always confuses me. My 19 year old has the smallest bedroom for various reasons (it was actually his choice) and has a standard single bed. He's 6 ft 3 and broad shouldered, but he still manages to sleep in until past lunchtime...

At university in the early 1990s I seem to remember two 18-22 year olds fitted pretty easily into very narrow single beds together ...

HibbityHobbityWho · 31/12/2025 11:36

😂 ah the university beds!
Shes getting a single, not up for discussion! There will be "limited" storage space as we're imposing the rule all her things need to be kept in her room and not strewn throughout the flat...

BillieWiper · 31/12/2025 11:37

It looks kind of small and kind of flimsy. If space allows I'm sure most teens would rather have a double or even a small double after aged around 15. Or one that's like a couch/bed at the same time. Not the fold out ones. Sorry DK what it's called.

That one looks like you'd need to replace it within a couple years.

Paaseitjes · 31/12/2025 11:44

Most ikea have multiple heights at which the slats can be installed to allow for thicker out thinner mattresses. It will probably look like the photo regardless of thickness unless she has a mega thick one.

They're pretty decent quality, ignore the posters saying it looks flimsy

Rubinia · 31/12/2025 11:53

We have this. It’s great for storage.

35cm from slats to top of headboard. I do think the design may have slightly changed since we got ours.
we‘ve had it for a few years now and no issues.

Ohthatsabitshit · 31/12/2025 11:56

People are so weird about beds. Of course an adult can sleep in a single bed. All this “my child’s had a double since they were 11” is some sort of weird flex. My children can sleep in single beds perfectly comfortably because they don’t have partners.

Kittkats · 31/12/2025 11:58

We have these. DS14 is 5’8” and has plenty of space. The bed is good quality and very solid.

winnieanddaisy · 31/12/2025 11:59

My teenage grandchildren both have small double (4’) ottoman beds . They like to starfish .

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 31/12/2025 11:59

18yo DD has this in her room, although she's at university half the year. It's absolutely fine. It's not a thing of beauty but solid and really good storage which works well in our tiny box room.

spiderlight · 31/12/2025 12:01

My tall teen has been in a small double since he was 11. He'd never fit comfortably in that bed.

My dd (16) is tall and would be happy with that bed. All these kids who need a massive bed to sleep in are going to be in for a shock if they ever have to share with someone. I am a tall adult and can easily sleep in a single bed.
